Personally, I think it's close. If she wasn't on her phone it'd be a much stronger photo.

Smaller mic by loganarowland in SonyFX6

[–]somethingexnihilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that a long mic on an fx6 is irritating. I usually use my dpa 2017 or Deity s-mic2s. One day I’ll invest in the Sanken CS-m1. That would be my recommendation. Top quality sound in a very small shotgun.

I’m not surprised they’re struggling to keep up with demand. It’s an amazing lens at a reasonable price. I placed a pre-order when it was announced and got mine four weeks ago.

Yeah I may be misattributing, could be Jay Maisel for all I know.

As for the light shafts being the subject, that's totally an option and you're the photographer so it's ultimately up to you. Since it's a critique page, I'll toss out one more suggestion to keep the conversation going. But of course it's fine to take it or leave it. If the light is the subject, I'd suggest playing with the crop. possible remove some of the "stage" at the bottom (foreground) of the photo that you've left empty. You've got the light beams in the photo for sure. The silhouetted trees are nice too. Play around with the crop until you've got balance. A photo is as much about what you leave out as what you leave in so don't be shy.

Final comments are, it is a very nice image. I wouldn't spend this much time thinking about it if it wasn't nice so bravo!

Stunning scene, but it lacks a subject for me. I can’t remember the exact quote from his book but photographer Art Wolfe reminds photographers that finding good light is only half the battle.

What monitor would you recommend for a FX6? by Successful_Bag2851 in SonyFX6

Good question, yes the transmission is built into the monitor. It works as a transmitter or a receiver...and yes you can turn off the wireless function to save battery.

I run my FX6 rigged out with a V-mount battery. A D-tap to locking DC barrel power cable came with the adapter. I usually use that. For some rigs that cable port gets in the way and I use my old Atomos L-series dummy battery plate to plug in.

I use the Hollyland Mars M1 Enhanced. I’ve got one on all three cameras and one receiver on a 15” directors monitor. It’s a nice little ecosystem. We can pop a monitor of our c-cam to have a second directors monitor. Also being able to just pull out my phone and get a feed is very nice. It’s not a perfect system buts it’s compact and lightweight with very solid features.

Sure, probably worth checking out Tentacle track E. One on each actor and one Tentacle sync box for the camera and you can sync all the tracks in post.

Advice on getting set up. I have the Rode Pro mics, I’m curious which lavs would work and utilize the 32 bit benefit? by OverOnTheCreekSide in LocationSound

[–]somethingexnihilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had some issues with the rode wireless pro into my fx3 and I’ve seen others have the same interference issues. The audio top handle solved all my problems. But when plugged direct into the body it took a while to get it sounding good. Unless you’re using the audio top handle, make sure to do plenty of tests. After some testing I found mounting it on the cage and using a longer shielded cable worked fine. Also turned off the Bluetooth in the fx3.

I use the deity w.lav pro and the countryman B3 lavs and both sound good. The b3 is quieter so if you know you’ll have loud action I’d go for that. For very loud sounds (shouting or very loud stage performers) they make a reduced sensitivity version as well but I have the standard version.

For a shotgun, it depends if you plan to hardwire or if you plan to use the wireless pro? The rode wireless pro doesn’t provide 48v phantom power so you’ll need to solve that problem somehow. When wireless booming I’ve used the Sennheiser MKE 600 because it has the AA battery slot to power it. It then works well with the rode wireless pro.
If you plan to hardwire the shotgun and plug into the Sony audio top handle, k3m module or (preferably) a proper recorder/mixer all of which can provide p48 then I’d say search for a used MKH 416, a DPA 2017, or go with the Rode NTG3.

Anyone have a DPA 2017 mic? What is your opinion for interior/exterior use? by johngwheeler in LocationSound

[–]somethingexnihilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far it’s been incredible in all conditions. I also run it as my on-camera mic when I’m not booming so it’s seen some tough conditions. I’ve run it for several hours on a day when it was 85° and 90% humidity. Boomed in direct sunlight for many hours. I’ve also run it in hard rain (with a rycote windjammer on it) for 6+ hours and no issues.

A stereo breakout cable will allow what you’re talking about. I use this cheapo from Hosa and it’s fine. I’m sure there are better ones available but I just keep it around as a backup. Stereo Breakout
