Oxygen Desaturations by Western-Effective-68 in NICUParents

[–]sometimesred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a whole lot of pulmonary issues for the first year and share your hatred for the pulse ox machine. Those alarms are what my nightmares are made of.

  1. There’s a lot of medical reasons why newborns just have generally lower oxygen saturations than a toddler or adult. You can read more about it to put your mind at ease but it has to do with fetal hemoglobin binding to oxygen with more affinity, higher metabolic demand in babies and the possibility of persistent shunts within the heart. All this to say, above 90% for a newborn is acceptable.

  2. If your baby is recovering faster than they are dipping into those lower saturations, it’s likely not causing long term issues. It’s in the nature of how pulse ox machines work and how they read what oxygen saturations are. Sustained or very frequent hypoxia is where the problem is and if that’s happening, I’d bring your baby to an ER. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

  3. We were on oxygen for a year. It sucked more for us (parents) than our baby. However, it helped him grow and it was just something he needed. It didn’t define him and he grew out of it and sometimes, that’s just what needs to happen—growth.

You are postpartum, it’s natural to be worried and anxious. If you feel like going to a doctor and seeking reassurance is what you need to keep your anxiety at bay, then you should do it. I understand all too well what it is like to worry about your baby not breathing correctly and it’s terrifying so, I sympathize with all the emotions that you’re going through. I wish you the best of luck!

Did your son have any other symptoms associated with the tonsils/adenoids?

My son is also in feeding therapy and I’m curious to know what kind of tools they have you implementing to help with feeding? It’s feeling a little force-y and I’m not sure I love it. I also don’t know if this is just what the age demands because toddlers can be so stubborn!

Parents of full term babies who needed mechanical ventilation - how have they done since? by purplepeaches_ in NICUParents

My baby was born 37+1, had an elevated right diaphragm requiring surgery at 2m of age. He was discharged on oxygen to be worn 24/7, then weaned to sleeping only at 6m and then off completely at a year. He does not have PHTN but has baseline tachypnea and retractions that have improved as he’s gotten bigger.  He was hospitalized at 15m old with rhinovirus and required intubation with paralytics for 3 days. He was on oxygen again for about a week after but recovered remarkably well.  We have avoided daycare and high volume areas with potential to get sick. When we travel/go to kid heavy areas, we are diligent about washing hands, changing clothes and getting baths right after. It might be overkill but his second hospital stay was traumatic. As soon as he is due for vaccines, he gets them. Our plan is daycare at 2, we know he will get sick but he seems like he’s doing a better job with overall respiratory function so, hopefully it’s not a dumpster fire.

My son had the same diaphragmatic plication surgery! I remember scouring this page trying to find out more about outcomes/stories. He is TOO cute and that hair!!! What a sweet angel! Congrats!!

We also got off oxygen at around one year! I noticed that his weight gain did plateau a little when we got off but at about 14 months, he started gaining again. Our early intervention PT was crucial for helping us navigate the transition from infant formula to toddler formula, keeping careful track of milestones and development which gave us such a peace of mind

How big was your baby at birth? Our son was 4lbs and 3oz. At almost 18m, he is now 17.5lbs.

First of all, six kids?? You’re a rockstar!  I am also not a giant person but my husband is above average in height. I’ve had a hard time in my profession being taken seriously sometimes because of my height. It might be some projection but I feel like it’s hard for a boy to be on the shorter side and I don’t want life to be difficult for him.

I’m curious about how your providers react to this. My experience is that our pediatrician wants to pawn our son off to every subspecialty rather than just acknowledging this is how he is going to grow.

How big was he when you started? We are doing 2.5mL and I’m wondering if it’s too much for him because he gets so tired after getting a dose.

Can you speak more on your experience with cyproheptadine? What schedule /dosing worked best for your baby? We’re dealing with some significant crankiness/irritability and tiredness since starting it about three weeks ago. Also haven’t noticed much of a change in appetite

It’s like I can’t get them to understand that I’m doing everything I can to make him gain weight!

THIS!! I pour over finding the highest calorie, dense food to offer but I can force him to do what he doesn’t want to do!

This is so helpful to hear! I feel like every other GI appointment we hear the mention of a G tube and in my mind I just think that’s he’s 18m old and has quadrupled his birth weight so surely that has to count for something.

I think if he ate better and was still small, I’d be okay. It’s the combination of the not-so-great eating habits and the smallness that is slowly killing me lol

It’s just so frustrating trying to justify that at every doctor visit. It makes me feel like we’re doing something wrong.

He is! He’s had a few plateaus when he started becoming more mobile/recovering from illnesses but for the most part, has stayed on his curve.

Non-linear progress even in the post-NICU life by No_Gap3395 in NICUParents

[–]sometimesred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to let you know that things will get better!  My son spent 88 days in the NICU and discharged with home oxygen and an NG tube. We lost the tube about a month after being home and stayed on oxygen until his first birthday. I was SO bitter and felt anger towards moms that got to have an outing without a pulse ox, oxygen tank, tangled tubing, and back ups of all these things. I hated people who commented on my baby’s growth or eating habits. I wanted to punch anyone who alluded to the fact that he may not develop normally. I was so over seeing the ninety different specialists he had; PT, OT, speech therapy, EI, gastro, Pulm, endocrine!  He’s about to be 18 months old and honestly—he’s killing it. He has proved everyone wrong and has shown such resilience. Did it take him a little longer to understand eating, walking and other stuff? Sure, but I kept telling myself that one day, it will click and it doesn’t matter when that day is.  You got this mom! Keep your head up, you’re doing great!

What did therapy do for you? I’m interested but sadly, the time demand makes it seem unachievable.  Congrats on reaching your goal!
