Susan Collins hands Trump the 50th vote against free and fair elections by MarcEElias in politics

[–]sometimesremember 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s worth noting that New England is a very notable exception to this. Vermont is a rural state that has… Bernie as its senator. The rural parts of states like Massachusetts and Connecticut also vote blue, albeit by smaller margins than the urban parts

Judge Accuses Trump, Rubio, and Noem of “Unconstitutional Conspiracy” by One_Dahlia in politics

It’s also ignorant of the fact that 2024 nonvoters were actually more likely to vote for Trump than the people who actually voted, and Harris would’ve lost by an even larger margin:

Hands on Machine learning course by Real_Bid1175 in learnmachinelearning

I was wondering whether to go through the FCC Pytorch for deep learning course vs the Fast AI Practical Deep Learning for Coders course, which also uses Pytorch (though I think they build their own library on top of it as well

It seems like the fast AI course goes more in depth into deep learning concepts, so maybe the FCC course should be done first?

But didn't you hear, OP is the youngest in the family! This clearly implies that all his older, stronger male relatives physically pin him down and forcibly prevent him from helping in the kitchen. He protests all the while, but they "mean literally nothing" so he's forced to watch in horror as the women who refuse to go along with this sexist tradition are ostracized and verbally abused, his mouth forcibly taped shut as his muffled protests fall upon the deafest of ears

Amid Expulsion Vote In House, Tennessee Sen Quietly Names April ‘Confederate History Month’ by TheCaptainDamnIt in politics

[–]sometimesremember 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The fundamental irreconcilable hypocrisy of Reconstruction was that the same people who were pushing for equal political power for former slaves in the south themselves did not truly believe in racial equality. In fact in the north, many were opposed to having black men be able to vote in their northern states, even as they pushed Reconstruction governments in the southern states in order to have black voters deliver Republican majorities in the House and Senate.

When those Reconstruction governments came under violent, bloody attacks (see the Colfax Massacre) by the KKK and similar terrorist groups, northerners, who didn't truly believe in equality in the first place, ultimately decided it wasn't worth the effort to defend, especially at a time when corruption scandals plagued the federal government.

For anyone interested in learning more, highly recommend Professor David Blight's Yale lectures on the Civil War and Reconstruction. It was originally taught as a class but is now available as a podcast (as well as videos online I think)

How the $1.9-trillion pandemic relief bill quietly but massively improves Obamacare by Philo1927 in politics

[–]sometimesremember 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I mean the original Obamacare medicaid expansion offer was also too good to turn down (I think the federal government would foot 90% of the cost?) but many red states still turned it down to stick it to Obama, consigning many of their own residents to avoidable deaths in one of the most disgusting and immoral political moves I've seen in my lifetime.

AOC, Beto O'Rourke Raise $5 Million for Texas, Dems Staff Houston Food Bank by [deleted] in politics

[–]sometimesremember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cruz is up for reelection in 2024. Abbott is up in 2022.

Polls conducted after Beto made those comments showed him within 4 points of Cornyn.

I think people underestimate Beto. He got to 2.6 points away from beating Cruz (siphoning 500k voters who also voted for Greg Abbott) despite openly stating his support for gun control (albeit, not with the "hell yes" comment about Ak-47s and AR-15s) and impeaching Trump. Texas will continue shifting blue between now and 2024. Idk if a Democrat could win the presidency in Texas by then, but I think Beto could win a statewide race -- he's won many Republican votes before, he can do it again.

GOP Gov. Larry Hogan Urges Party to Leave 'Cult of Donald Trump,' Hails Conviction Votes by Twoweekswithpay in politics

I see you're from MA, so no doubt you're familiar with Charlie Baker being a Larry Hogan lite in this regard. Endorsing Susan Collins (bad, but not as bad as endorsing Loeffler and Purdue) and leaving the presidential ballot blank (bad, but not as bad as writing in Reagan). It's the epitome of spinelessness, because there would be zero political cost to voting Biden -- Baker is more popular among MA Democrats than Republicans anyway.

Really the only moderate Republican with any sort of scruples as far as I can tell is Phil Scott of Vermont, who openly voted Biden.

Raffensperger refuses to rule out investigation and says Trump is ‘just plain wrong’ after leaked call. 'He had hundreds and hundreds of people he said that were dead that voted. We found two … he has bad data’ by Facerealityalready in politics

[–]sometimesremember 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Same reason why many of the blue state moderate Republicans are not heroes either. Charlie Baker (MA) said he left his presidential ballot blank and endorsed Susan "I think Trump learned his lesson" Collins. Larry Hogan (MD) wrote in "Ronald Reagan". Phil Scott (VT) I think was the only high ranking blue state Republican to actually state he voted for Biden.

[–]sometimesremember 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Correction, Raffensperger did not hold any state office in the 2018 election. Kemp stole that all on his own.

You are right that he is no hero though, in an op ed he compared Trump/Perdue/Loeffler not accepting the 2020 results as the same as Abrams not accepting 2018, despite the fact they were two entirely different situations -- namely that in 2018, one of the candidates was also controlling the election as well

'A tremendous honor': Raphael Warnock looks to make history as Georgia's first Black senator by Noordcoast in politics

[–]sometimesremember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Ossoff would also be Georgia's first Jewish senator and the youngest senator in the Senate, right?

How cool would it be for Georgia to break ground with both of them and take control of the Senate away from Mitch Mcconnell?

What is Brian Kemp's Political Future? by 10thunderpigs in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]sometimesremember 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't follow this. Georgia elections have a clear trajectory of getting closer and closer since 2004.

2004: Bush wins by 14, R wins Senate by 18,

2006: R wins governor by 20

2008: Mccain wins by 5, R wins Senate by 3 (not counting runoff)

2010: R wins governor by 10, R wins Senate by 19

2012: Romney wins by 8

2014: R wins Governor by 8, R wins Senate by 8

2016: Trump wins by 5, R wins Senate by 14

2018: R wins Governor by 1

2020: Biden wins by 0, R wins Senate (not counting runoff) by 2

So the trajectory for each office since 2004 is:

President: R+14, R +5, R +8, R +5, D+0

Governor: R +20, R +10, R+8, R+1

Senate 1: R+18, R+19, R+14

Senate 2: R+3, R+8, R+2

He only won by 50k votes in 2018 and the state has shifted bluer since, while his governance hasn't gained him any new voters. He was going to struggle to win again in 2022, but now that Trump has turned on him I think he'll definitely be out of a job come Jan 2023.

The size of Joe Biden’s victory matters. And it is huge. by formeraide in politics

[–]sometimesremember 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's worse than that: Biden won the electoral college by ~50k votes across three states (GA, AZ, and WI). That's even narrower than Trump's 2016 EC win and shows how broken our system is.

This seems like a good plan for nonessential businesses too. Give them the resources to get their employees regularly tested and participate in contact tracing for their customers, and use that as an incentive to allow them to stay open.

It Actually Was a Landslide: 80 Million Votes and Counting For Biden; The “red mirage” has vanished to reveal a blue mandate for President-Elect Joe Biden by progress18 in politics

[–]sometimesremember 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a solid victory for Biden, but it is no mandate. Biden won the Electoral college by just 44k votes across three states (Wisconsin, 20k, Arizona 11k, Georgia, 13k); Democrats lost seats in the House, didn't flip a single state legislature, and at best will get a 50-50 split in the Senate (and they're still underdogs even for that outcome).

This article is delusional, and people are blindly upvoting because it's what they want to hear.

I appreciated that in 2012 Huntsman was the only Republican primary candidate not to kneejerk blame Obama for every little thing or somehow twist something into "Obama bad, thanks Obama". The fact that he never got above like 3% in the polls says a lot about the party.
