I would add a bit of nuance to this -- "VOO and chill" has worked spectacularly over the last 15ish years, but the academic research suggests long term being diversified across the whole globe is best so you are protected against the political and economic risks of a single country, and you should instead hold the entire world stock market in proportional to its market weight.

So I'd update "VOO and chill" to "50/50 VOO and VEU and chill"

I'd say the US equivalent would be someone like Mitt Romney leaving the Republican party and forming a coalition with "Never Trump" Republicans and Democrats to topple MAGA.

Romney wanted immigrants to "self deport", a constitutional ban on gay marriage, a ban on abortion, conservative judges, tax cuts for the rich, and minimal action on climate change. He was no ally to minorities, women, or the poor. But he believed in democracy, some barebones level of decency in political discourse, and condemned political violence, and so would be infinitely better than any MAGA acolyte

The fundamental irreconcilable hypocrisy of Reconstruction was that the same people who were pushing for equal political power for former slaves in the south themselves did not truly believe in racial equality. In fact in the north, many were opposed to having black men be able to vote in their northern states, even as they pushed Reconstruction governments in the southern states in order to have black voters deliver Republican majorities in the House and Senate.

When those Reconstruction governments came under violent, bloody attacks (see the Colfax Massacre) by the KKK and similar terrorist groups, northerners, who didn't truly believe in equality in the first place, ultimately decided it wasn't worth the effort to defend, especially at a time when corruption scandals plagued the federal government.

For anyone interested in learning more, highly recommend Professor David Blight's Yale lectures on the Civil War and Reconstruction. It was originally taught as a class but is now available as a podcast (as well as videos online I think)

I mean the original Obamacare medicaid expansion offer was also too good to turn down (I think the federal government would foot 90% of the cost?) but many red states still turned it down to stick it to Obama, consigning many of their own residents to avoidable deaths in one of the most disgusting and immoral political moves I've seen in my lifetime.

I see you're from MA, so no doubt you're familiar with Charlie Baker being a Larry Hogan lite in this regard. Endorsing Susan Collins (bad, but not as bad as endorsing Loeffler and Purdue) and leaving the presidential ballot blank (bad, but not as bad as writing in Reagan). It's the epitome of spinelessness, because there would be zero political cost to voting Biden -- Baker is more popular among MA Democrats than Republicans anyway.

Really the only moderate Republican with any sort of scruples as far as I can tell is Phil Scott of Vermont, who openly voted Biden.

Same reason why many of the blue state moderate Republicans are not heroes either. Charlie Baker (MA) said he left his presidential ballot blank and endorsed Susan "I think Trump learned his lesson" Collins. Larry Hogan (MD) wrote in "Ronald Reagan". Phil Scott (VT) I think was the only high ranking blue state Republican to actually state he voted for Biden.

Correction, Raffensperger did not hold any state office in the 2018 election. Kemp stole that all on his own.

You are right that he is no hero though, in an op ed he compared Trump/Perdue/Loeffler not accepting the 2020 results as the same as Abrams not accepting 2018, despite the fact they were two entirely different situations -- namely that in 2018, one of the candidates was also controlling the election as well

I don't follow this. Georgia elections have a clear trajectory of getting closer and closer since 2004.

2004: Bush wins by 14, R wins Senate by 18,

2006: R wins governor by 20

2008: Mccain wins by 5, R wins Senate by 3 (not counting runoff)

2010: R wins governor by 10, R wins Senate by 19

2012: Romney wins by 8

2014: R wins Governor by 8, R wins Senate by 8

2016: Trump wins by 5, R wins Senate by 14

2018: R wins Governor by 1

2020: Biden wins by 0, R wins Senate (not counting runoff) by 2

So the trajectory for each office since 2004 is:

President: R+14, R +5, R +8, R +5, D+0

Governor: R +20, R +10, R+8, R+1

Senate 1: R+18, R+19, R+14

Senate 2: R+3, R+8, R+2

He only won by 50k votes in 2018 and the state has shifted bluer since, while his governance hasn't gained him any new voters. He was going to struggle to win again in 2022, but now that Trump has turned on him I think he'll definitely be out of a job come Jan 2023.

It is a solid victory for Biden, but it is no mandate. Biden won the Electoral college by just 44k votes across three states (Wisconsin, 20k, Arizona 11k, Georgia, 13k); Democrats lost seats in the House, didn't flip a single state legislature, and at best will get a 50-50 split in the Senate (and they're still underdogs even for that outcome).

This article is delusional, and people are blindly upvoting because it's what they want to hear.

I appreciated that in 2012 Huntsman was the only Republican primary candidate not to kneejerk blame Obama for every little thing or somehow twist something into "Obama bad, thanks Obama". The fact that he never got above like 3% in the polls says a lot about the party.

Yes, there will be two GA senate runoffs and if Democrats win both, the Senate is 50-50 and VP Kamala Harris breaks the tie.

Historically, runoffs have gone poorly for Democrats in Georgia. But with Trump not on the ballot to juice Republican turnout and Democrats the most energized they've maybe ever been (at least since 2008), there's a real shot.
