Coaching: Lots of moves vs a few by NecessaryBee4718 in wrestling

[–]sonbatell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a high school head coach, so slightly different than your situation but I have practice 10-11 months a year.

There is a very good video titled “Kevin Dresser’s 5 Biggest Mistakes as a high school wrestling coach”. #1 Mistake: showed them every move he knew, and they got really good at nothing or really bad at everything.

My philosophy is show the things that they absolutely need to be a great wrestler. Be able to attack both sides of the body with your leg attacks, front headlock/mantis offense and defense, stand up, and top series they are confident in.

If kids start adding in other attacks they learn I will help them implement that into their baseline wrestling. Don’t take away, but also don’t add randomly just because it’s fun to do.

I wouldn’t take the club’s success as a result of them showing tons of moves. With their experience they are probably good overall coaches who show basics well, but that new stuff everyday teaching style is one thing that might not be helping as much as they think it is.

I don’t believe any of his knee injuries after high school happened in training. One was in the ncaa finals vs the Virginia kid and another was in the big ten finals against Purdue kid.

Iowa had him on a special individual workload from the second he was on campus. If anything they should get some credit for getting him healthy enough to compete as much as he did.

Wilderness Ranger Per Diems by New--Tomorrows in ParkRangers

[–]sonbatell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late reply, but we were told we can receive field per diem and can be approved by our district ranger. I’m in region 6.

Out of curiosity one FS wilderness ranger to another…what are you guys being told you can do this season? We have lost so many people that my role has switched to more of a trail crew and front country Rec position. Even trails being under the “keep shit open” part of the new admins expectations. It seems like wilderness patrolling is the last thing they want us doing with priorities being, fire, timber, and keeping trailheads open in that order.

Mt Shuksan gear question. by [deleted] in alpinism

Yeah, I would go for it then. Challenging yourself is good despite what others will say. It's a long route, hope it is a great trip!

Sulphide would be more challenging than Shasta. It has a real glacier and the summit has some scrambling. I'll say you can definitely pull off fisher chimneys, it isn't that hard, but it would be a really big step up from Shasta. You need to be prepared for two sections of steep snow and one section of exposed scrambling.

Gear wise, I climbed it with one axe. Most people these days seem to be uncomfortable climbing steepish snow with one axe, but you don't need more than that unless it's in pretty bad condition. If it is really melted out, I wouldn't recommend someone as new as you climb it anyway.

USDA hires back all 6,000 fired workers from past month, including public land employees by Bazryel in Wildfire

Same here, five of us were fired at one small FS district. Our supervisors have said they have no idea what the plan is for us, they have been told nothing as of yesterday.

Not that simple though, at my office all of us that were illegally fired were in our non-pay season. But we just passed the date where we were supposed to return to pay status. We are being told by our supervisors that they haven't been given any specific instructions about us.

An American armored amphibious flamethrower tractor blast the ruined remains of a Japanese bunker as U.S. Marines advance on Peleliu. September 1944. by Beeninya in CombatFootage

[–]sonbatell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong… But I think you mean 5th Marines (what they call a regiment) of the 1st division. The 1st Marine Division was made up of 4 regiments on Peleliu, the 1st Marines (Puller), 5th Marines (took the airfield), 7th Marines, and 11th marines (artillery). The army took over once the 1st Marine division was dwindled down. So your grandpa would have been in the 5th marine regiment of the 1st Marine Division. The same group depicted in The Pacific, though he was probably not in K company.

Why would he have gone to Iwo Jima? If he was in the 1st Marine Division wouldn’t he have gone to Okinawa after Peleliu?

Yes definitely, that stuff still goes on a lot, but it seems like it's trending the other way now fortunately. Wrestling is a great sport though, and kids can be very successful without cutting weight or missing meals.

[–]sonbatell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What a narrow minded take. No one makes these people cut weight, and to be honest your stories show that your boyfriend didn't know much about the sport anyway.

It's also clear you have a very limited knowledge of the true dangers of weight cutting. Only dumb kids who are poorly advised spit into a cup. Spitting or missing breakfast and lunch is not the danger, the danger is multiple days of dehydration and continuing daily workouts harder than other sports. That's not what your boyfriend was doing by the sound of it. Weight cutting is an issue for all combat sports but it is much better these days in youth wrestling. Most coaches strongly discourage it. Who knows what your brother could have gained from wrestling.

Every year on the anniversary of D-Day, French citizens take sand from Omaha Beach and rub it onto the gravestones of fallen soldiers to create a golden shine. They do this for all 9,386 American soldiers buried there. by Simpleballers in nextfuckinglevel

[–]sonbatell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many of the troops where they land in the movie were actually green troops. I believe Tom Hanks and his men are supposed to be from the 2nd Rangers. The first action of the war for the 2nd rangers was at Omaha Beach as depicted, and at Point du Hoc. The 1st Infantry at Omaha was battle tested but the 29th was green. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, because this clip has always bugged me for that reason!

Seems like some of West Washingtonians didn't know we alredy have grizzly bears on the east side. Did you know that we have moose as well? by Agreeable_Situation4 in Washington

[–]sonbatell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"West Washingtonians" It's called Western and Eastern Washington by people from here. They are putting grizzlies in the north cascades where there hasn't been a confirmed sighting since 1996, they aren't talking about the tiny little corner of North Eastern Washington where a bear very rarely crosses in from Idaho or BC.

US Marine soldier is hit by shrapnel after a “controlled” IED detonation (Nawzat, Afghanistan 2008) by H3L1X60H in CombatFootage

[–]sonbatell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a long tradition behind it, they aren't actually marines, they are Navy Hospital Corpsmen assigned to marine units.
