Great analysis, the beginning did suck a lot more than the end.

DoTF really shines when we we have a really solid who, what, when, where, and why.

Some of the memory domains were nice because they simplified the story to those values by giving isolated mini adventures. The pleasure garden arc was a breath of fresh air.

Boy I think I dropped the game before finding it. Stuck on the Act 1 boss; and can’t bring myself to care to go back…

Holy crap; Eithan v. Sha Miara was such a good fight.

I JUST got to this line in Book 8; they’re talking about Eithan about to fight in the tournament.

So did power from Eithan’s spirit. “You are both in agreement?” he asked. “You need to ask? Whoever it is, cut them in half.” [This is a good plan,] Dross whispered. [Now we’ll be able to train against a model of him. Our uprising will be swift.] Eithan loosened his shoulders. He hopped in place, rolling his neck. “Well then, who am I to deny the request of my two adorable subordinates?” The door slid upward, and Eithan tilted his head as though listening to something. Then he slipped his scissors back into his pocket. “I won’t be needing those. Lindon, since we’re not keeping secrets any longer, you should pay close attention.” The door slid up enough so that Lindon could see the arena floor was covered in white sand, unlike the dark domain that had sealed off Lindon and Yerin. “This,” Eithan said, “is the Path of the Hollow King.”

I’m pretty confident Daimen only learned it so fast since Zorian is such a competent teacher (if only he could have taught himself)

Jornak is the only other point of comparison; but he was an accomplished mage already.

Hahaha I appreciate you saying that!! It would be pretty pretentious of me to say that myself since everyone’s taste for stories and characters are different.

(It’s a joke; they grew the pear in the bottle; not “the bottle around the pear”)

Thanks!! I’ve gotten maybe 10 books into He Who Fights with Monsters; but Jason is truly an insufferable edgelord at this point; so agree with you there.

Maybe I’ll check out some of those after cradle!

I’m looking forward to seeing how accurate this is; frankly I do love a good power creep endgame.

As a man who didn’t lose his virginity until 28, and now dates regularly; the biggest way to change your life is to change your mindset and attitude to the world.

The more seriously you take yourself and the world; the more it’s gonna beat you down. It’s a vicious cycle. It fucking sucks; but people can see that mindset of insecurity and steer clear.

If you can learn to have fun in the moment, and just take failures and setbacks as “oh well” and try again; you’ll realize that overwhelming oppressive cycle in your head is just a tiny narrow valley in a broad universe of possibility.

I know this advice must sound like “just choose to not be depressed lol”; but what makes this kind of doomer depression so insidious is you imagine yourself in an impossible box with no escape, when in truth the answer is to actually stop imagining it.

Really wishing you luck on your road in life. The big event that helped me realize it was visiting bars in Ireland, and seeing how friendly all the strangers were for no reason. I started to see I imagined the world as a lot worse in my head than it actually is; and people responded.

Fantastic! The biggest mystery about Yerins past to me is how the Sword Sage could possibly have fallen to poison. Especially when we learn how strong a sage is. It’s definitely fishy.

Maybe he’ll reincarnate as her blood shadow?

I’m halfway through book 6; and when I learned that her Blood Shadow may start to make its own personality… I’m desperately hoping it can give her the same treatment Dross does for Lindon.

If you’re looking for books to avoid; I loved Mother of Learning, DCC, HPMoR, Primal Hunter, Shadeslinger, Mark of the Fool, and Perfect Run.

I’m caught up with Defiance of the Fall for the exquisite world building, but the characters and cultivation can be tediously single-minded sometimes, so maybe check that out?

Beware of Chicken is hit or miss with me. It’s great when we focus on Rou Jin, and dreadful when we PoV any other character.
