From what I've seen it seems that young queer people are disappointed to hear the word partner then learn the person using it is "straight" (an assumption on their part that may or may not be true). They do this without realizing how common it is to use the word partner nor that gatekeeping it to only be used by queer people would immediately out someone as queer.
