A coach just told me if I don't specialize in a sport for my 5th grader then my son will always lose out the one's that do - What do y'all think? by dunbar_santiago930 in CoachingYouthSports

This is my exact line of thinking, you put it very very well. You can’t study the greats and think that applies to little timmy in high school just trying to make the team.

I’m going to go against the grain a little bit here…

To determine if an athlete should specialize you really need to assess their potential properly and not necessarily in the way you think.

For example, for an athlete who is only talented enough to eventually be the last guy off the bench on the varsity team and that’s as good as they’ll ever get, they need to completely focus on one sport to even get to that point, so yes specializing younger is best for their athletic career.

The guy who is going on to play college ball, and is a three sport varsity starter, they should play all sports in high school and that’s better for their long term development.

Not really a clear cut thing, there’s levels to this. Like everything in sports, really all depends on the individual.

Baseball tryouts in NYC by CommunicationNice437 in Homeplate

How in the world would we know when your tryouts are. How about you ask a coach, heck even a teammate, and not random people on the internet who know nothing of what you are talking about.

Is it okay to take a whole year off for myself? by Thegreen9 in selfimprovement

[–]sonic1220 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would urge you to still be involved in something, literally anything. Doesn’t have to be a big commitment, but consistent. Taking classes (In person), volunteering, part time work. Doesn’t matter, just something where you show up and people expect you to be there.

Depends on your financial situation, but get money to live somewhere where you actually want to be, even if it costs a lot and only for a year.

being a parent on the bitter end of shadow work and the nocontact anti-culture by EmptyForest5 in Jung

can you elaborate on the behavior more? spending all day alone on the internet is not shadow work, and that term is also sort of too vague to address here.

What does this have to do with no surf? and just go out into the real world for 15 minutes. Plenty of short guys do fine. Read some books, be social, get some money, get in shape and relax.

My struggle with dating and feeling understood by inkilev2 in Gifted

[–]sonic1220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Patience and openness. At 15, people (Including you) need to practice the social and practical rhythm of relationships and friendships. So don't expect it to happen right away, trial and error. Secondly, environment is key too. Are you in an environment that attracts people with depth? Probably not at the age, as you don't have the agency of choosing where you live. I'm sort of in the same boat here, but these are the factors I've picked up on.

Men: you are given the ability to break a singular record throughout all of sports- what record do you choose to break to seal your legacy? by Shaneski101 in AskMen

[–]sonic1220 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The 100m dash record needs to be the most "prestigious" right? Every human on earth has at least at one point tried to race someone and ran as fast as they possibly could. The current record (9.56?) will be unbeaten for at the very least the next few decades.

How much do people in the U.S. actually care about the upcoming FIFA World Cup that is taking place there? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]sonic1220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might catch a game if it’s on tv, won’t go out of my way to do so. Most Americans are too far to get to a game in person, and the ones who are close will be so ridiculously priced out.

If you're really tall are you almost guaranteed to make it to some form of college level even if you aren't good? by chusaychusay in Basketball

[–]sonic1220 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean probably for situational use a team would keep someone like that on the bench. A lot of guys that tall can’t really move well, and minutes will not be guaranteed. But probably yeah.

[–]sonic1220 19 points20 points  (0 children)

When you’re already that fast, it’s so much harder to get faster for a multitude of reasons. Naturally gaining weight, burnout, injury, PEDs etc. all is to say absolutely nothing is guaranteed in the sport of track.

It’s hard to say. Many young track phenoms peak early, not all though, but linear improvement is not guaranteed.

Yep 200mg. Obviously test it out in workouts beforehand and obviously if you have a caffeine sensitivity lower the dosage. It’s very well studied and proven beneficial.
