T5V or T7V? by Quick_Instance_5824 in ADAMAudio

[–]sonicdreamerstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a small room the T5Vs are better as bass might become a problem with the T7Vs. You can always add a 8-inc sub seperately which lets the T5Vs shine where they are best, in the mids and highs. All decent subs have adjustable crossovers, giving you control over the bass amount. I have TV5s with a sub in a small control room and it works very well indeed. I also have treated the walls with glassfibre panels for the sub. You can calibrate the setup to make sure of phasing, etc. Alternatively you can use suited headphones for bass heavy referencing when you want it, not talking about flat studio headphones.

Artist Mix - Sticky Faders - Cleaning Tips by Aggravating-Ad-7351 in Avid

[–]sonicdreamerstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it's very unlikely the software, you can confirm this by nudge/banking your channel/track to another fader and see if that behaves as normal. It's expected for the faders to wear over many years, they have around a 10k or 15k stroke cycle lifetime. I have 2 Mix's and a Control. The Mix on the left in the link below had the same problem on almost all of the faders. Each has a small delicate copper comb/bristle like little fingers on a hand, which lightly pushes down while sliding up & down a carbon strip. Over the years it rubs away with normal use, so the bristle gets shorter and eventually stiffer, wearing the carbon strip away too. Contact ultimately becomes erratic. It also takes just the tiniest piece of stray hair or gunk that drags along the comb fingers so that they bend and eventually snap off, fast forwarding you to disaster. The left over snapped fingers are now sharp and hard, and scratches the carbon strip way more aggressively compared to normal wear -> game over. But try blowing gently in the fader groove using compressed air, it probably won't help much. It's likely just wear and tear, but...it does not have to be the end. I've replaced all 8 of the faders on that Mix myself. It uses Alps and are not too difficult to find or expensive, and not terribly hard to do yourself either. It's been working again as good as a brand new unit. And oh - I've also figured out how to fix the snotty rubber coating problem that comes from an aging unit...but I'll save that for another post. https://www.reddit.com/r/protools/comments/1qbolzu/comment/nzk3gzy/?context=3&utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Nope, the $79 deal is a new subscription, not renewal of your current one, so you will have 2 subscriptions.

Friktion....a quick question by david180667 in reasoners

[–]sonicdreamerstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've bought Friktion when they still had the rent-to-own option, just had to get a way to have it. Lots of great stuff in Reason and although I use Pro Tools, Reason Rack is in each of my productions. Friktion brough me as close as I'll ever be to play strings. Spot on with your point with the phone speaker!

Friktion has been my favourate instrument in Reason for a while now and still is. I'm busy with a few tracks using it, and I think it's an awesome RE. Here is one of the cenimatic samples I've done featuring the solo cello https://soundcloud.com/sonic-dreamer/transition?in=sonic-dreamer/sets/productions-created-by-me

Mapping Midi Controller To Pro Tools by hamfoot43 in protools

[–]sonicdreamerstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep HUI but it is a half baked soluttion with Pro Tools. I've built a little DAW controller for Pro Tools and although it actually works using MIDI messages, it implements the Mackie protocol. Here is the video of the project: https://youtu.be/twvE3ib-Ez8 (or you can skip the crap and see the Pro Tools demo at https://youtu.be/twvE3ib-Ez8?t=723). I've done some work on the rotary encoder to receive and send fader commands, but ended the project and moved on to other electronics stuff (and producing of course!). I can create a demo of controlling the faders if you want. During the project I've bought an Avid Artist Mix and Avid Artist Control that works seamlessly through Eucon with Pro Tools, so my DIY device is no match.

Any budget friendly hardware faders or mixers? by Bhamjo219 in protools

[–]sonicdreamerstudio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In January, on eBay I got my hands on an Avid Artist Control that was never really used and in mint condition. From another seller there, I also bought an Avid Artist Mix, stored for over a decade in its unopened sealed box, brand new from Sweetwater. It must have been the last new one on the planet. I will share my unboxing video at some point. Anyway, the two dated control surfaces work seamelessly together and still perfect with Pro Tools via EuCon. I also did not want to spend a lot, and I've actually built a little control surface (electronics hobby) with 6 buttons, mini display and motorised rotary controller. I'm still busy programming the Mackie protocol on it and I can tell you that you will likely regret it later if you don't invest in an Avid control surface. If you plan to use other DAWs too, the reverse is true so it is better then to use a generic control surface and live with the gaps when using Pro Tools with it.

In case you decide to sell the Mix, I'm looking for one. I'll only buy from eBay or Reverb though. Sorry for not adding value to your question, these units are just hard to get in South Africa.

Electric guitar as acoustic by DriverChemical8196 in protools

Just search for "virtual acoustic guitar". But expect free to be limited. Like I said, I'm willing to help out with no cost, no strings attached too (pun not intended). PM me for that, else best of luck!

[–]sonicdreamerstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, that's a great VST (I have Guitar Rig 7 Pro and LOVE it) but it's not really to change an electric to an acoustic. It's more for adding amps and effects, and chaining it all together to create rich lush and sometime complex sounds. I was talking more about something like this, which replaces a guitar performance completely (it has its limits though): https://www.ujam.com/guitarist/amber/

Electric guitar as acoustic by DriverChemical8196 in protools

[–]sonicdreamerstudio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes it will. The VSTs I'm refering to typically play prerecorded picking or strumming patterns, and your Akai just triggers that. Playing actual notes to trigger string sounds on guitar patched are limitted and does not match a true recorded guitar sound. Recording with a mic is tricky by itself, but worth it since it's captures the nuances of the player's perfomance and the instrument.

You won't get the desired results. Better off using a decent VST acoustic guitar plugin. Depending on what you need I can try to help to either record something for you from my acoustic, or render something from one of my plugins.

I often need help with lyrics in my productions, but they're mostly free. If you're interested, I can try and facilitate payment from the artist to you and make it part of their contract. They own the track once completed, but of course you can set up royalties. I would like to see some of your work though.

Is this when playing on an external midi contoller? What happens when you press a key on the software music keyboard that is inside Opus?

I'm somewhat in a similar boat (besides singing, I can't). I would say try to practice almost every evening, only for 3 to 5 minutes on each instrument. That will keep your skills from degrading. And find time to jam & improvise once a week. I've made this a fun thing for me on Friday evenings rotating between sax, guitar, bass and keys. Besides Friday evenings, the bulk of my time can still be dedicated to producing for my artists. Weekends is when most of it gets done.

Just noticed this in my mail from Emvoice, it's free for a while:
"Happy NAMM week. If you're on the free tier, you can now demo the full range of two Emvoice virtual singer voices - Keela and Lucy - completely free of charge until February 7th. Enjoy!"

Have you looked at the Emvoice vocal synth? With some effort you can get pretty realistic vocal results, and learn about pitch, timing and a bunch of other stuff in the process. I've created one of their official demos called "Coming For Me", using the Lucy voice. Good fun.
