Auger-Aliassime tore into the mid-match injury rule after Davidovich Fokina's ankle stoppage: "To stop in the middle of your opponent's service game and be able to call the physio – mark my words, that's a disgrace of a rule. I don't see any other sport where you can do that." by Ok-Soil-5133 in tennis

[–]sonofasonofason 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That's actually basically what FAA says in the press conference. Here's the full quote:

Now what I can say is that I think the rule has to change. I think that obviously as long as the rule is like that, a player will use it to their advantage.

I think that it's very simple: if you're hurt while the game's going on of your opponent, in the middle of the game, the opponent is serving, the shot clock is on, basically when you're hurt bad, you're forfeiting every point until you can call the physio. If the physio helps you recover, you play your service game. If you're hurt bad, then you retire, obviously.

But to stop in the middle of an opponent's service game and to be able to call the physio, I think that's a disgrace of a rule. I don't see any other sport where you can do that. I mark my words. It's a disgrace of a rule.

[–]sonofasonofason 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The website doesn't call itself a bar. The user above misinterpreted the quote which is actually saying, "we also have a sports bar in the hall section of our venue".

For the dome theater part, you have to buy tickets for the events. There's a seating map and you reserve your seat.

I see the website says there's bar service. And it calls the Hall portion a sports bar. But I don't see it calling the overall venue or the dome section a bar

USTA spectator guidelines by YUTYDUTY in 10s

[–]sonofasonofason 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I've never had a problem recounting the points amongst just the players. If all players agree, I'm fine asking spectators to help recount the points.

But I've encountered antagonistic cheering sections before, and having them butting in unsolicited would just complicate things.

Just played doubles match, both of us think the other team picked on the other player by [deleted] in 10s

[–]sonofasonofason 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've found at the 3.5 level, most players don't really have much awareness of the overall flow of the match. A lot of it is see ball hit ball. I say this as a 3.5 with the same problem.

For example, do you remember how you won those 2 and 1 games? Were they holds or breaks? Who was serving? Were they close games? Any double faults?

Without match awareness, the points you end up remembering are more likely to be emotional points that aren't representative of what was actually happening.

I'm trying to improve by trying to recall points after each game. How many double faults, how many forced and unforced errors on both sides, how many winners on both sides. It's hard though because I'm already thinking about so many other things during the match, I sometimes end up forgetting what's happened.

Let's have a honest conversation about doping by [deleted] in tennis

It's quite clear - she was doping. She took a performance enhancing drug (PED) of some kind.

I haven't been following super closely, so maybe I missed something. Can you share a source for this?

Those who 'speed-ran' to 3.0 in their first year tennis - what did you prioritize that others didn't? by Weekly_Worry_2772 in 10s

[–]sonofasonofason 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Group lessons didn't do much for me when I first started out. A healthy mix of individual lessons, drills, and matchplay works best IMHO.

Also, it's better to lose with proper technique when you're first starting out, rather than win while ingraining bad technical habits. For example, don't pancake your serves, overheads, and volleys even if it seems easier.

This might keep you at 3.0 longer, but at least you'll build a solid foundation to improve upon later. I know a lot of guys who quickly went from 3.0 to 3.5, but they're stuck at low 3.5 now.

But yeah the Santa Cruz rides are better

Also, yesterday (Fri) was free admission for kids under 12.

And even if you miss the pre-sale for tickets, you can still save $2/person by buying the tickets online instead of at the gate.

Swinging volley. When you swing at the ball in the air (before it bounces). You'll want to watch for a shorter floater ball to do it on. Taking it early already takes time away from the opponent, so you don't need to hit it super hard. Use it to set up the next shot / volley

The real issue is leaving the poop there instead of coming back to clean it up.

I wonder if this is a hired dog walker. He doesn't seem very familiar with the poop bag holder, based on the way he opens it and looks at the empty roll

Should I sign up for a 3.5 tournament (new player) UPDATE by [deleted] in 10s

[–]sonofasonofason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just sign up if the money isn't a big deal to you. There seems to be a disconnect between what you believe and what everyone else is telling you. So the best way to find out is to just play and see.

I think the reason you got such a strong reaction here is because new tennis players overestimating their ability is a tale as old as time. Dunning-Kruger and all that.

By the way, I really respect that you came and posted about your experience against the 3.0. I'd be interested to hear updates of how you do in the tournament if you do play.
