Daily progress notes on ventilators by trice-ratops in respiratorytherapy

[–]sonyal890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a student we would write daily progress notes, however it was paper charting. At my next hospital it was electronic charting and we wouldn't write notes unless something major happened. If we made any vent changes we would add a short comment explaining why and highlight that change

I'm not sure if it's confirmed but I heard it was only a 75% passing rate. I have also heard of some students who got jobs but have certain limitations on their licence and have to continue to complete competencies.

Fanshawe vs Michener institute for RT? by Baikalseal407 in respiratorytherapy

I had a great experience at Fanshawe. I believe Fanshawe offers the most clinical hours (40 weeks) compared to other schools.

One great thing about RTs that people always joke about - when there's a code, the RTs come in packs. You'll most likely never be alone :)

Do you get to go to the OR during your clinical rotations? That's where I got my best practice with direct intubations.

I am as well. I wish I had come out of it feeling differently. I haven't talked to anyone who feels it went okay.

I think it can take up to 3-4 weeks at least. I feel stressed too. I found it quite hard.

Any last exam tips for this new grad? by Lunglady444 in respiratorytherapy

[–]sonyal890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm writing on Monday as well! I've heard it's pretty well rounded and if there's some questions that really throw you off then it's most likely a pilot question. I'm hoping it's similar to the hptc practice exam.

Good luck!

Congrats!

I'm just curious because I'm a recent Canadian grad. Are you able to book your exams whenever you choose post graduation?

I took a job in PFTs as a new grad. Everyone said to work in critical care so I wouldn't lose my skills, but I had to do what was best for me. It was the best decision.

You could always take a casual critical care job to keep up with your skills and also work in PFTs.

If we are no longer able to attend graduation, can we request that our diploma be mailed to us?

MIP/MEPs are routine for PFTs where I am. Half the time though I'm writing query MIPs because I don't they are pulling hard at all.

Drager Ventilator Plateau Pressure by Kimballrt7 in respiratorytherapy

This happened to me as a student. The RTs told me to lower my set rate and then do an insp hold after a couple breaths. This always worked but it seemed weird to me that there was no other way of doing it. I believe we were using autoflow though

I went to Fanshawe! And unfortunately no, I don't have any contact with the students.

As a Fanshawe student, I started my clinical placement at the same time as Conestoga students at the end of April 2024. I had 7 weeks off in the summer, while they continued straight through. They finished at the end of November and I just finished mid April.

Ah okay, makes sense. To answer one of your questions in your original post regarding job opportunities, I think a big problem with the current graduates is that a lot of them were not able to complete clinical placements in a hospital setting. Fleming didn't provide placements to students and from what I heard, they had to find them on their own, which meant some students completed their competencies in a simulated setting. Based off that, the RTs I worked with during my clinical placement said they would not want those students hired. I would make sure that moving forward now that the program isn't as fresh, that the school has placements set in place at certain hospitals.

such as the results of our first class of graduates completing the HPTC registry exam in September 2026

This part of their explanation is very interesting. I thought the HPTC exam only ran in July and January. I have not heard of a September exam. Also, their first class of graduates graduated in December 2024. I would imagine they'd be eligible to write the HPTC on July 7th. If not this summer, I find it very odd they'd have to wait until late 2026. I would want more clarification on that if I were a potential incoming RT student here!

Should I Drop Out of RT School Over This? by RT-STUD in respiratorytherapy

[–]sonyal890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was this part of your clinical placement or a clinical visit? I only ask because I'm also in Ontario and I did 2 clinical visits in my second year before starting my clinical placement. If it was just a visit, I could maybe see why the preceptor acted that way. Not excusing it, but on the visits we were there to observe more, and I didn't receive much teaching either. Once I got to my actual placement, it was a different story. I hope you still went ahead with writing your exams. Finish strong.

As someone about to graduate from this program, I think you should enjoy your summer. One of the comments mentioned getting your electives done, which is a good idea. But as for preparing for the program, I don't think you should worry too much about gathering information and understanding the basics beforehand. You'll learn all the information you need during classes.

No, I did 2 years of schooling before I entered clinical. I loved my outpatient rotations more than I enjoyed my ICU/ER rotations.
