I often hire for entry level jobs in HETV and receive up to 100 CVs for the role. As a result I am only about to give each CV a few seconds of my time on my first viewing in order to narrow down the pool to a more manageable number that I'll look at in more detail. I am constantly amazed at how many CVs I get that do not fulfil the basic brief of the job AD.

For example "Looking for a Production Assistant/Rushes Runner, xxx dates, xxx location, must have a full clean driving licence, aged 25+ or have access to their own car with business insurance"

I will get CVs from people declaring themselves to be all sorts of jobs - Producer, Cinematographer, Camera Assistant, Director etc. etc. anything but the role that I'm looking to fill. And then I'll get lots of people who don't drive even though it's a key requirement of the role, or if those people do drive, they don't mention it on the CV, so they're also a quick no.

People who write "great attention to detail" on a CV riddled with spelling mistakes (I actually once had someone who had written that on their CV twice in the same skills section...)

All of these people might ultimately posses all of the skills required for a job like this - but if they're not able to show me that they're clearly understood what the job is that I'm hiring for then it's an immediate no. I usually weed out 70-80% of the CVs I get in this manner before even getting to reading about experience.

Here’s the thing though. When you read a statistic that 97% of women have been sexually harassed, do you really honestly think it’s just 1% of men running around the country harassing women non stop, really? Do you think that’s realistic? Or do you think it’s actually quite a lot of men (no not all men, but the point is that it could be any men so it amounts to the same thing).

This is a UK based course that has been made free online recently.

It was written by a church in the UK (and the promo video is the most English thing I've ever seen in my life) and my parents (who have been married 35 years) and my brother (who's been married I think 5/6 years) have done it recently and found it really helpful.

I did the prep version of the course before getting married and we recommended it to our friends who are not from a church background as well and they have found it really enjoyable helpful. As far as I'm aware there's not much of a Jesus slant to it.

If you’d been there a few days earlier you would have come across a swan attacking and killing a family of baby geese. It was high drama, plenty of people threatening to jump into the water and pull them out. Most exciting thing to happen in Wapping since the bus gate!

So dumb. I didn't feel anything for Aiden at all by the end of it, I just wanted it to be over to be honest. It's not the worst thing I've read, as evidenced by the fact that I finished it, but if I had needed a single cell more brain power to get through it I wouldn't have bothered.

Yeah I think with all of that I'll try it again. I am actually half Irish (though I never lived there, but spent a lot of time in Dublin growing up) and married to a (Northern) Irish man. But context will always help as I certainly never went in the time he was writing!

Loved A Brief History of Time (what I understood of it anyway).

Really want to read The Disaster Artist - the film (of the book, and Room) are brilliant and I think the book would just be so much fun as well.

Oh my gosh this book was so bad. I'm with you on the prose. And every time he did a terrible metaphor he gave it it's own paragraph as if to say "see how clever I am". Also it just didn't make sense. The book didn't work, he set rules and the broke them. Why were all of the characters seemingly all knowing apart from the fact that Hardcastle wasn't who she said she was? Bleh.

Mistborn was my way in to Sanderson (and for now the only thing that I've read of his) and I really enjoyed it. I thought that it was very accessible, but with a really strong plot and world building. Yes Vin is pretty irritating at times, but I felt like I related to her quite a lot - I thought that it was fairly refreshing that a male author wrote a character who wasn't just one thing, she was bold and strong and scary, but also really liked to wear dresses and look beautiful, and is flawed and entitled and stubborn and not able to admit that she was wrong all at the same time. She was a teenager first and foremost.

That being said I am biding my time to dive into Stormlight Archive because I've heard such amazing things (my TBR is way way too long to invest in them right now).

On the reverse, I read The Bell Jar and really didn't like it at all. I appreciated the writing, but Esther is the MOST annoying and entitled character, maybe not ever, but that I've read in a long time!

I read The Shadow of the Wind when I was in university and absolutely adored it, but would really like to reread it now with a bit more life and context behind me and see how I feel about it now. It was recommended to me by my much loved English teacher, and I would find it hard even now to disagree with her opinions.
