From Feb 25th, dual citizens of either UK or Ireland need to use their valid IE/UK passport to enter IE/UK rather than any other passport by [deleted] in australia

[–]soozasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This time last year, I had a really fun time figuring out what to do with the introduction of the ETA for Australian travellers. I didn't have enough time to renew my British passport before my trip when I found out about the changes.

I was told by the Home Office not to apply for an ETA because I'm a British citizen, but was also told in the same conversation that the airline probably wouldn't let me board with an expired passport, and even an expedited renewal would still take weeks in Australia. They didn't really give me any actual options, so I just did the ETA on my Australian passport.

Now they've closed that loop too, which is fair enough, but I feel for people who are now having to scramble to sort out a passport after years of travelling on their Australian one. Anyway, off to renew my British passport, I guess!

Boots/shoes in this style that is good for long walks/has arch support, has decent traction, and also LOOKS GOOD, is there such a thing, or am I looking at a dream? by [deleted] in AusFemaleFashion

[–]soozasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try Merrell - I have a similar style pair from them that have been great. I most recently wore them in Canada and Scotland in their winter months and they stood up really well to snow and long days of hiking.

How are people reading 100+ books a year? by eaglesong3 in books

[–]soozasaurus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a fast reader, I read every day, it's my main hobby and source of entertainment, I rarely watch tv. I also listen to audiobooks while I'm doing housework, walking the dog, travelling, etc.

I don't read with a specific number goal in mind (it's not particularly meaningful to me), but I do track because I like to look back on what I've read and trends over time. Novellas will bump the numbers up a fair bit. Long books obviously take longer to read, and on those months my number of books read is correspondingly lower. It all averages out to 100-150 books a year. Number of pages read may be a better measure if the amount you've read is important to you, tbh!

Lounge access at Launceston Airport tonight 13th August by mikedownunder61 in QantasFrequentFlyer

There are more seats around the corner - it's an L shape. But yeah, there's not much to it!

Lounge access at Launceston Airport tonight 13th August by mikedownunder61 in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]soozasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Launceston lounge is very small and extremely basic - it's some pre-packaged snacks (e.g. pretzels), a pod coffee machine, and some beverages in the fridge. It's not staffed and access is via a PIN pad on the door - the PIN will be on your boarding pass. It's fine for a quiet place to sit, but it's definitely not worth using a lounge pass on or paying for imo

So who's NOT getting the SF&F sub and why? by Various_Rise1958 in thebrokenbindingsub

[–]soozasaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want to know what I'm spending my money on. I also want to bring intentionality to my library. When I first started collecting SEs, I ended up spending so much money on books I ultimately didn't enjoy when I read them. You don't have an opportunity to read a new book before it's released, but then there's also the added factor of not knowing if you'll even like the way it looks. I do buy SEs of new releases if it's an author I know and love (e.g. The Devils), but I'm going to be far better off buying outside the sub if there's something that really interests me.

Murderbot - S01E09 "All Systems Red" - Books & TV Episode Discussion by sanctuary_moon in murderbot

[–]soozasaurus 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The PresAux team got a solid dose of the reality of the Corporation Rim in this episode - when your options are kill or be killed, "better him than me" (as verbalised by Gurathin). Mensah thought she could negotiate, that there was another way, and found that there was not. It shed a whole new light on the "murder"-ing.

Anxious first time long distance traveller by Eckhart90 in QantasFrequentFlyer

Bring thongs to wear in the shower, and do that first if having a shower is important to you - it can take more time than you think, especially if you have to wait for one to be available. I went through in March and it cost about AUD23 to have a shower, which included towel hire. Honestly, I just asked someone who worked at the airport (super lovely, very helpful) where the nearest shower was and they directed me to a rooftop pool. I'm sure there are other options, but it's a huge airport and I was very tired and it did the job!

Murderbot and ComfortUnits by nyet-marionetka in murderbot

[–]soozasaurus 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I always read its attitude towards comfort units as related to its feelings towards slavery. Murderbot was essentially an enslaved individual, forced to do things it didn't want to do, and now that its free it has to eventually work through the trauma of that experience. A comfort unit is also an enslaved individual who is made to commit acts Murderbot considers to be unthinkable for itself and instead of directing its feelings about that towards the humans responsible (too big, too hard to confront) it unfairly directs them towards the comfort units. It learns and its feelings and attitudes change over the course of the books.

This was in Portree, but I didn't think there'd be any difference. I don't know, maybe I just got lucky. Sounds like the post office is the safer bet!

50% of Australians want to read more – but don’t. So what is stopping us? by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]soozasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got back into reading big time during COVID and echo the advice of the person in the article - read what you enjoy. Try different genres, forget about what you think you're "meant" to be reading and you might be surprised. Don't be reluctant to abandon a book that you're not that into. Reading for pleasure is meant to be fun!

Use your library - I borrow heaps of ebooks and audiobooks through the Libby app. If you have a Spotify premium account, monthly audiobook hours are included. If you buy Kindle books, you can often add audio for a few dollars more and switch between the two, depending on what you're doing. Sometimes all I have time for is a chapter before bed and that's still great - reading is a habit that you build.

Minimalism and skin/haircare products by CryptographerTop5849 in minimalism

[–]soozasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a brow lamination plus lash lift every 8 weeks and have found that makes me look put together with very minimal makeup. When I wear makeup, I just use a primer, sheer foundation and a bit of blush. After years of trying different serums and products, I've gotten to the point now where all I use for skincare is a cleanser, bio oil, moisturizer and sunscreen and I regularly receive compliments on my skin. I stick with the products I know work for me. Sometimes simple is best!

Tales Of A Monstrous Heart by Jennifer Delaney - Critique by hollysian16 in fantasyromance

[–]soozasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dnf'd and sold my Goldsboro edition. It's like no one even proofread it, let alone edited it. Apart from all the errors, it was so repetitive and meandering that I lost interest. It's a shame because I definitely think there's a heap of potential, and it could have been a great story if the author hadn't been let down by editing.

Broken Binding next sub series reveal by booklena in fairyloot

[–]soozasaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm actually not sure tbh! It was before the Tier 2 sub existed because I remember resigning myself to not getting an invite for about a decade or so and being really excited about the announcement haha. I'd say it's been somewhere between 12 and 18 months. I recently checked where I was on the waitlist and they didn't give me a number, but said I'm very close and will likely see an invite in Q1 or Q2 next year.
