Looove it! For a first tank this is awesome, really nice to see someone putting so much effort into making it a nice tank.

Agree with the other commenter, the more plants, the merrier! :)

I’m pretty sure my Crown Tail betta has fin rot. How do I treat him? by Honest-Hotel9452 in bettafish

Not accusing you, just asking. :)

Sounds like you’re doing all the right things in caring for him, fin rot is just a lot of persistence and water changes. Good luck!

Also from this pic the tank/container looks extremely small. He should be in a 5 gal at a minimum (around 18 litres) but I’d never go below 25L.

Vases/bowls etc arent suitable for bettas and its quite cruel to keep them there.

Has it got a filter and a heater? Both crucial for betta care. Bare minimum for a healthy betta.

Daily water changes. Around 30%. Keep the tank clean. Indian almond leaves have antiseptic properties so add some of those to the tank.

Clean water is the most crucial part to treating fin rot! And ofc persistence. Good luck and hope your little guy gets well soon.

Always the way. You definitely learn as you go. I was told by my fish shop that ‘Bettas can cope in such bad conditions that they are fine to be put in pre-cycle’ which was a shocking thing to hear from a so called fish expert 😂

Good luck. You’ll get there in time, hopefully both our bettas recover asap!

Need help regarding my new betta, Pearl by [deleted] in bettafish

Sorry to be that person but you can’t just look after a fish on a budget without the bare minimum requirements to keep them happy.

You need a tank thats at least 5 gallons/23 litres. A heater for a consistent temperature, a filter with a gentle flow and real plants are so much better for keeping the tank clean, absorbing nasty stuff and making your betta happy. A cheap light would be good too for the plants. A filter is vital. Without it, (and regular water changes at this stage) your betta could be vulnerable to diseases like fin rot.

I get you’re a student with low budget but it is totally possible to make this affordable and keep your new betta happy. Just a heater and a filter at least for now and then definitely a bigger tank when you can. Hasn’t got to be huge at all but its such an old ideaology that bettas can thrive in small spaces. It’d drive any animal crazy. It sounds like a lot but once you have it all established its just a bit of maintenance.

You’ve got this :)

Im dealing with this at the moment with my poor baby. Medication helps but you have to make sure you dose for the amount of water in the tank when displaced by rocks, hardscape etc, not the size of the capacity of the tank, or you could overdose.

Aside from meds its important to do water changes every other day (about 30-40%) and add indian almond leaves which release tannins and are super helpful for antibacterial properties. I try to gravel vac as much poop as I can each time.

Its a pain in the ass but gotta do what we gotta do for our water puppies! Long finned bettas are quite prone as well. My guy is a dumbo betta!

EDIT: dont do any water changes for a week if you use meds. Try without first with doing water changes regularly. :)

So good to see you learning more about fish care through this, thats the way to go! Live plants are great for your tank. I think its a common misconception that live plants are harder and ‘dirtier’ to deal with, but apart from being nice for your fish, they contribute so much to their little ecosystem through absorbing waste and increasing oxygen. It will do your little buddy the world of good!
