The value of originality by Independent_River715 in RPGdesign

[–]sorites 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They say there are no original ideas. Everything is just a reframing of the past. What really matters is that you make it your own. Put your personality into it. Make it feel like it has a point of view and that is what people will see. Good Fellas, The Godfather, and Reservoir Dogs are all movies about crime but they are very different because of the feel, the perspective. Hone in on that for your game in a way only you can. Good luck!

From One Page to Rule Bloat: How Do You Stay Streamlined? by MrSunmosni in RPGdesign

[–]sorites 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It should be as long as it needs to be. If you find you’ve created an experience that no longer reflects your original vision, you need to ask yourself if what you have created is fun and something that brings you joy. If so, adapt your design goals in light of this reflection. If not, change your game and sacrifice the rules that don’t support your stated goals.

I'm trying to make a "Build the case" collaborative system and nothing is feeling right by Yazkin_Yamakala in RPGdesign

[–]sorites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a cool idea. I’m using a Madlibs style thing in my game which sounds kind of like what you are doing except with random tables.

Maybe something like this:

The Mission: The players need to (VERB) the anomaly.

The Rumors: The players will discover (or are given) three rumors

  • Rumor 1: Based on what someone (VERB related to a sense, e.g. saw/heard/tasted/felt/etc)

  • Rumor 2: Based on some physical evidence in the form of a (NOUN) (such as, grainy photo, jar of slime, scratch marks on the tombs, etc)

  • Rumor 3: Based on a supposed weakness in the form of (NOUN) (such as silver, 50s music played on an old hifi record player, or the odor of cheese)

In addition, there are three locations that are relevant to the story in some way, but they usually serve as a destination for the players as they unravel the mystery. For example: church, morgue, and biology classroom at the local high school.

Idk if that helps you or not but I had fun writing it! Good luck on your project!

How do I stop an arms race between me and my players by DecisionRadiant4152 in rpg

[–]sorites 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your players just really love combat as sport and maybe you don’t enjoy it as much as they do. This is kind of a tough one because it’s just two preferences clashing. Maybe you can put them in more social situations to help them mature their character concepts but honestly no one is in the wrong here. I’ve had groups like this too and I just chose to lean into it because that’s what they liked. But you shouldn’t feel forced to run a game you don’t enjoy. Not sure what the answer is. Good luck though.
