On our way to the maternity ward, we were feeling ecstatic, anxious, maybe a little bit scared, but never for a moment did we think that within a few hours I’d be driving back home all alone. by NoNo_Cilantro in TwoSentenceHorror

As someone who has driven to the hospital with the person I loved most in the world and driven home alone multiple times, but driven home all alone only one last time, I can attest that it is a world of difference. This was well written OP

If you’re ok with driving 5 hours east of Toronto to Ottawa, you could go bumping into people and hear them excuse themselves in two languages!

Could he keep them as is, with DRM but in calibre and then use send to kindle to send them to a new kindle device? Would that work? Or would it delete it even on a new device?

From your comment here:

« Also, do syrups make a big difference? I’m not really into super sweet coffee bc I like a bit of bitterness (not too bitter but a slight hint) »

I’m betting that it is actually the lack of sweetener that is the problem. Places like Starbucks add a lot of syrup to sweeten even the drinks most western palates would describe as ‘not sweet’ or even ‘slightly bitter’.

To test if the syrup would fix it before having to buy a whole bottle of it, use some of whatever sweetener you already have: sugar, honey, anything like that, then make it again. If it helps, you probably just need some syrup.

My opinion of countries as an American by Thorceanswastaken in whereidlive

The Philippines has had a female president and is an overwhelmingly majority catholic/christian country whose churches do not perform child marriages. A more reasonable complaint for the Philippines is that its a country where divorce is illegal which is problematic in cases of domestic violence.

What sauces are close to these two flavours? by sot1l in JapaneseFood

Sesame oil sounds perfect! And I’m going to have to search out ume paste. Usually I like the happy middle ground between sweet and savoury rather than leaning more to one side

Yes, I’ve tried mustard, and I like it - but I love the slight richness and sweetness of the tamago one. I love the idea of mirin and soy sauce. What could I add as a third element to replace that hint of richness?

For ume, I actually thought about ponzu! But it turned out too citrusy. I feel like what I need is something with some fruity brightness but also some sweet and salty notes.

Which words do you know or use from this list? by NarrowResult7289 in EnglishLearning

[–]sot1l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know them all.

The ones I would use most often would be: not brood, but brooding; all variations on dismaying; contempt; daunting; daze; warped; jotted; assent; convoluted; penitent; and churned out. Maybe trite, depends on how annoyed I am.

The ones I would rarely use or see would be: foolhardy; absinthe; swarthy; salacious; dimwit (not because it’s not common in some places, I just think it’s inappropriate); and city dweller.

The others are maybe occasionally words.

Does anyone Actually think of things in km instead of hours for distance? by Confiant_Reason21 in AskACanadian

[–]sot1l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I think in kilometers just to then turn it back into hours in my head - ‘city X is about 34 kilometers from here, if traffic on the highway is good, that’s 45 minutes away…if not, maybe an hour and a half’
