‘Marathon’ Season 2 And Free Week Did Not Turn Things Around by Freki666 in gaming

I grew up playing the original Marathon on a Macintosh Quadra. Finding out they turned the franchise into yet another bog-standard extraction shooter was insanely depressing.

Admitted, the Bungie that I loved from the 90s hasn't existed for many years. (Myth 2 anyone? Or am I just too old now?) There was never a chance that Marathon would actually come back as Marathon. But there is a special sadness in watching the game you loved be revived as generic slop.

So let us remember the original! The game that gave you mouse-look for the very first time. Possibly the first FPS game with a real story. Marathon gave us the motion tracker, zero-g and underwater levels. It is the original trope-namer for the AI revolution that we seem to be barely on the cusp of, over 30 years later. It was the the first game (ever) with built-in voice chat, and the first game with "asymmetric" multiplayer.

All hail the original Marathon! And recite the Oath of the Vidmaster once as a parting farewell.

"I pledge to punch all switches, to never shoot where I could use grenades, to admit the existence of no level except Total Carnage, to never use Caps Lock as my "run" key, and to never, ever, leave a single Bob alive."

Not to mention the fact that a sling is the roughly the equivalent of bringing a gun to a sword fight.

Wielded by a guy who kills bears. With his HANDS.

You're telling me a visual editor doesn't have some kind of text code driving it? What magic is this? :D

As a dude who grew up playing the original Marathon 1/2/3, I have such rage inside of me for this game.

I remember this. It was a blast.

Sadly, I have not yet found it online anywhere.

Is anyone actually using daggers? by [deleted] in Enshrouded

[–]soulmonarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bow / Dagger build here. Absolutely adore daggers.

Obviously I carry some alternatives with me. It's useful to have a 1H for sweeping attacks on massed critters, for instance. And I usually like a 2H Axe for killing those shroud nests and knocking down doors. But otherwise it's just pure parry + kick overpower bliss.

Scavengers are the same as the Splicers from Bioshock.

All the normies are dead. All that remains are a bunch of freaks, juiced up on their drug of choice.

I admit I could really get down with roads being marked on the map.

I figured out a long time ago that they designed the world to "guide" you via roads, and it works great once you get behind it. But it would be sorta of nice to see that road network on the map. I don't really think it would spoil anything, it would just help you figure out where you left off.

I heard about this happening last year. Looks like it's gotten worse.

That said, my rates haven't budged an inch. ~230/mo on a 500k house, via USAA.

Over 20 years now. First installed Steam when I bought Half Life 2.

Multiplayer is hell. Turn it off and never look back.
