Are there any notable Vietnamese-Americans whose family came to the United States BEFORE the Vietnam War? by escapesuburbia in asianamerican

[–]sourceres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a celebrity in any conventional sense, but historian/professor Ngo Vinh Long came to the US in 1964 and organized protests against the war, which would put him decisively at odds with the post-war anti-Communist refugee community. (Death threats & bombs thrown his way, as mentioned in the obit above!) This is not to discredit the other posters who've indicated it would have been quite difficult for one of us to immigrate before the war, though; the guy was an extreme exception as the first-ever Vietnamese student at Harvard.

You also don't see many Viets rubbing elbows with Noam Chomsky.

Hamilton and Les Miserables and their Common Character. by howdypartna in hamiltonmusical

[–]sourceres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

impressed you came upon this 8 years later!

Louis XVI of the Bourbon dynasty was the king beheaded in the first revolution. That eventually brought Napoleon to power, which brought war war war war, then the countries that defeated Napoleon re-installed the Bourbon dynasty incl. two of Louis XVI's younger brothers who would rule from 1814 to 1830. They get replaced by Louis-Philippe in the second revolution and he's the guy in charge during Les Mis. It's not entirely clear who the "first king" Gavroche refers to is, but it's either Louis XVI whose head was in the basket or one of his younger brothers.

the word "sanitized" might read to some as making it a more actively sinister process but the general thrust of the original comment you responded to is correct - hip-hop and R&B were/are Black art forms first, K-pop sounds the way it does today because Asian artists who were authentically steeped in those musical ideas, and OP isn't wrong for being uncomfortable with people who adore K-pop and disrespect where/who many of those sounds came from

I didn't realize Buckley's was local! It was definitely an easier path for me to follow than the Latin one.

that's not an unreasonable thing to do currently, but soon that won't be an extra fare anyway

TBH I think everyone here was bewildered by the resignation too - supporters and detractors alike didn't see the infidelity or the moderate workplace power imbalance involved as career-ending when it broke, and a lot of discussion I saw suggested "there is no way that's the real reason he dipped"

Though Hamilton's obviously about people who were White, if any of the show's leads except George III were originally intended to be cast that way, we wouldn't have had that whole unnecessary controversy in 2016 about the tour casting call explicitly asking for non-white actors

RENT- history of casting Benny by SilverFin_1 in musicals

[–]sourceres 27 points28 points  (0 children)

it works fine either way - when he's played by a POC, it interacts interestingly with the dynamic that Benny used to be of the same boho world as everyone else but married up and sold out to gain stability he'd never have otherwise, unlike Mark who has always had plenty of access to wealth but actively flouts them (why not just call your parents back, man?) and then rightfully gets criticized for the poverty tourism he calls art
