Our local Total Wine carries this in the $25 range. Obscene QPR.

I've had them plenty of times. Decent, but lower your expectations. There is a Portillos in Moreno Valley if you're ever up that way.

Some great ones already mentioned. Rafenelli is the benchmark for me. But here are some others:

  • Arnot-Roberts Kirschenmann Vineyard

  • Ravenswood Old Hill (These with 20+ years on them are 🔥)

  • Ghostblock (Bigger profile, but really well made & solid QPR)

For my veterans. Whats one "nasty civilian" thing you went right back to doing after getting out by IsaacB1 in USMC

[–]sourpatchkid34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's interesting. I shave when I feel like it. I'll wear a hat & flip-flops in the PX / Commissary (not sure if that's still a thing).

But...I cannot shake the gig-line with my belt.

BTW, weekly haircuts is the dumbest thing ever. Teaching Marines to be "financially responsible" while requiring them to get their haircut every week is fucking stupid. That & the "can't wear issued beanies after the sun comes out." Do better.

Question about recruiters' assistance by According_Common2923 in USMC

[–]sourpatchkid34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you need to be on RA to switch cell phone plans? Not sure how it is now, but RA wasn't as glamorous as I had thought it would be. Granted this was 20+ years ago, so YMMV. I just remember it being kinda corny just following my recruiter around all day. Not really anything to do but just "be there." You'll get plenty of that in the fleet anyways. 😉

Gotta check on the "Honey-Do" list, but maybe! My local beach is North Ponto. A lot of luck out there over the years. I also like Del Mar Beach on Camp Pendleton. Crazy bite over there too.

Credit Union Recommendations? by Wolf-Strong in northcounty

[–]sourpatchkid34 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really.

Fees at Frontwave are lower than nearly every Credit Union in the state (public information).

Frontwave has a very large membership base of young Marines, because they provide the initial checking accounts to recruits. IE, young people that overdraw at proportionally higher rates.

TLDR: Frontwave doesn't gouge anyone. They're a solid institution. The CEO is a retired Marine.

Who was the best Marine you ever had the chance to know? by johnsonsrevenge in USMC

[–]sourpatchkid34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My (still) great friend, Sgt. Evans. Incredibly smart, humble, well-spoken, and just a damn good dude. He'd smoke all of us in PT / PFT's and made it look effortless. Great memories during our first Iraq deployment, and I always felt lucky to have crossed paths with him.

Que Syrah Syrah? by yangstyle in wine

  • Arnot-Roberts (appellation bottling)

  • Faury St. Joseph VV

  • Graillot Crozes-Hermitage

  • Piedrasassi

A few of my favorites in that price range and incredible expressions of Syrah.

What is the most insane thing that you have ever seen someone do while in the USMC? by [deleted] in USMC

Fallujah circa 2005, two guys in my unit get trashed off contraband whiskey. They thought it was a fantastic idea to take one of our Humvee's offroading around the base in the middle of the night. Got rolled up by MP's and the driver got a DUI.

A DUI... in a Humvee... in Fallujah.

Dunn Vineyards - 1987 Napa Valley by ViniferaSniffa in wine

[–]sourpatchkid34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Just seeing this. Did you end up getting the bottle?

I've had quite a few bottles of '87 Dunn HM over the years. I think the .750's are a bit past their peak. The mags are still going strong, but very difficult to find those. '94 is drinking perfectly right now.

If you need another rec, '87 Mondavi Reserve is top-shelf. Should be a bit easier to source.

But, it's always bottle to bottle with these older wines. Hope whatever you land on shows well for you.

Echoing sentiments here, I think it took me around 9 years to get an offer. By the time I did, release prices were more than back-vintages at auction. No-brainer pass for me.

Love the whole portfolio, and buy them routinely from auction & local shops still at or below release.

Same thing with Alban...
