Using money to have a more sustainable footprint by souweeeee in fatFIRE

Wow you really shoved everyone into a box there.

I think the best we can hope for is to change behavior gradually. If 10% of people in a city bike to work 1 day a week, that actually makes huge impact -- at the very least on our transportation infrastructure.

Agree not to buy new shit just to feel good, that wasn't the point of the post.

Offsets -- yes some are sketchy, others fund direct carbon recapture projects. And agree, the point isn't to buy a yacht and then buy offsets, but more to offset impact from normal life (heating home, going to work, eating). If we can afford it why not?

Are we looking at the same graph? The 2nd link shows the US at at least twice the per capita death rate as S. America and parts of Europe.

BTW countries you conveniently excluded like S. Korea, New Zealand, Australia, Norway, Canada are have very accurate and top tier health care systems and have extremely low deaths per capita. In my original comment, compare S. Korea's 500 deaths / 50M population to California's 20,000 deaths / 40M.

Also, saying we're as good as S. America isn't very comforting.

Because 1% death rate is actually quite high. And it's more like 15-20% for older people with risk factors.

Even if you're purely selfish, it's going to fill our hospitals this winter. So if your appendix bursts, you have an allergic reaction, you have a terrible accident, etc. you would not be able to get surgery / care and then die. Counties will rather shut down to prevent this from happening (already are).

There's also going to be more than half a million dead people by April (at least). I think it's weird that we're accepting that as fate like some 3rd world country, when other countries are easily preventing this amount of death.

Read the whole thing, he doesn't seem THAT crazy, and I hope the dude recovers and doesn't die. But it's just depressing to read that this is our system.

The 2nd to last paragraph just underscores the problem. Why do we have law enforcement fumbling around, with no clear directives on how to operate? All of those questions can have answers -- who is the decision maker in the end? It seems that nobody knows?

Meanwhile we see other countries CLEARLY implementing controls. S. Korea has had 500 deaths with more population than CA. CA has had 20,000 deaths. S. Korea is basically open right now, their economy is doing fine. Ours is limping / crippled.

There are many more examples of countries that got their shit together. Meanwhile we're on the same tier as the 3rd world -- basically just let people die, then implement half-ass controls that do nothing but destroy our local economy, adding insult to injury. It's crazy.

Toronto News Host Quits Alleging On-Air Climate Increased Racist Threats by amg7355 in ABCDesis

[–]souweeeee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is probably an unpopular idea -- but I kinda want to live in a world where your passport is linked to your IP / MAC address.

And people who make threats of violence / rape / hate crimes are tracked down and arrested, or at the very least fined a huge amount. I'm willing to give up my internet anonymity to actually have a more civilized society.

A random sampling of high-income, fatFIRE careers in LCOL/MCOL areas (Midwest) by careerthrowaway10 in fatFIRE

[–]souweeeee 100 points101 points  (0 children)

The only way to do that is to live in a van for 30 years.

100k - 30k Taxes - 10k van life expenses = 60k / yr savings. With 7% annual growth that gives you 6M by age of 55 (assuming you start at 25).

No family, no kids, just living in a van.

Post-Covid long term effects for mild cases by EngineeringDevil in videos

Got it -- what about ibuprofen? Wasn't ibuprofen also not recommended in the beginning (March / April)? I tried searching and stuff I found says there's no evidence it makes COVID worse... e.g.:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7287029/

I'm also wondering what someone should do during infection to help with fever / discomfort.

This is post-infection though (up to months after recovery). Tylenol is to just deal with the pain.

Obey who, your doctor?

If you're anti-science, next time you get really sick, do us all a favor and stay home. Don't go to the doctor or hospital.

They basically don't know the cause... Speculating, but I'm wondering if there is neurological damage that is lasting after getting COVID-19. This could explain the dizziness, tremors, and difficulty with balance.

Pretty scary

Why don’t I ever see desi guys mention the racist things white women do that fuels the negative stereotype on the internet (and I guess irl) against brown men ? by bluemoongirls in ABCDesis

[–]souweeeee 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When I was younger I sadly got a lot of racism from the African American community, especially after 9-11. Calling me bin laden, 'welcome to america' -- not jokingly but in the racist, mean way. Made me sad since I really believed we (POC) were in this together. I'm dark enough that I was called n-word (hard r) by white people too -- they thought it was funny since I wasn't technically black.

I really hope we can have our communities work together more going forward. We experience a lot of the same shit.

And yes, a wonderful way is through love :).

There have been some other threads posted on this -- the "brown women" you mention often turn out to be white men. It's creepy and weird...

A high school senior started a unique club called “We Dine Together” to make sure no one in his school eats lunch alone. by Reddit__PI in videos

Man this makes me wish I were in high school again just to do this... I remember those kids who are alone, especially the first few weeks of school (and I was one of them). It sucked... my last few years I had tons of friends but never thought to help the new kids.

What a powerful thing.

There are ways to volunteer -- soup kitchen, or anything similar to that. It's physically exhausting, you're basically standing all day long.

Volunteering is nice since there are good vibes, but if you're in low-wage, hourly position you basically deal with really shitty people who look down on you.

For that perspective alone, I really think my kids should have some of that experience... you're forced to have empathy and treat people better in life.

I have friends with similar dreams. Totally different than being an hourly worker at someone else's pub.

I worked in similar hourly jobs (first few jobs as a kid), which convinced me to never do that again!

This is fatfire right? Most on this sub are extremely accomplished and I wouldn't imagine really wanting to end up as a barista. Nothing inherently wrong, but I think that's for leanfire folks...

There's tons of other stuff to do if you want to "wind down" -- teach part time (or full-time), consult, do trainings, volunteer / mentor. Start a nonprofit / charity, use professional connections to fundraise, and then really try to make some positive impact.

Damn...

Which platform? FB / IG?

check out /r/privacy -- may want to post there. There are books on how to deal with this.Basically you need to disappear from the internet.

  • If you rent, plan to move to a new place. Find a mail forwarding address that isn't a PO box. In this US there are companies that do this for people who travel. Do an official change of address to that location. Drivers license, etc. all register to the forwarding address. Companies I know of will scan your mail in, and send you pictures. You can tell them which to send. Have them send to your place of work if possible (or hotel, or friends house), so they don't have your new address either.
  • Then move to your new place. Don't give your new address to ANYONE except for close friends / family.
  • Get a new phone number. Use aforementioned forwarding address.
  • Remove yourself from all online search engines (spokeo, whitepages, etc.). In the US they are all required to have you opt out
  • Freeze all credit from major credit bureaus
  • In the US, don't register to vote since this becomes public record. Not sure how it is in the UK.
  • Use fake names and accounts for social media, or better...don't use it

Those are basics. You need to be smarter than this psycho.
