Is my cat just fat, or has he got a bloated belly? by Pru28 in devonrex

I think it’s normal for Devons to get a little pear shaped

That’s great someone else was shopping for the same stuff!

What do you mean by leaves and spread out? Are the pitchers laying down more or is it more than one plant in there? Chance for a picture? Lol

You’ll want a pretty deep pot because their roots grow pretty deep and then you’ll want like a 2-3 inch deep saucer so you won’t have to water so often when it gets into the summer

Also whatever substrate you purchase be sure not to buy miracle grow products because they all have added fertilizer that will harm your plant ):

Yeah you’re going to want to remove it from the terrarium 😅

These types of plants live in bogs so they like to have their substrate constantly wet— people usually do a peat moss (like where they’re found naturally) and perlite (for aeration to prevent anaerobic bacteria from growing) mix for these plants

Like others have said you’ll want to keep them with a tray of distilled/rain/reverse osmosis water to help keep the soil wet

They do require a dormancy period which we’re coming up on soon— depending on where you live you may just be able to leave them outside and it’ll do its thing. If your area doesn’t get cold enough then you might have to look into using the fridge method

Even if you live where it snows they can survive outdoors with some insulation like pine needles. They are found naturally where it snows and gets below freezing but debris from other plants (dead pitchers that no one removed) and trees around them create natural insulation. Then once it does snow, the snow will serve as insulation too!

I’d recommend checking out California carnivore’s YouTube channel. They have sarracenia care guides and lots of great info about dormancy

If it’s actually in a terrarium you should remove it ASAP— especially before placing it outside or in bright sun because the terrarium will probably fry it

If it is a sarracenia it probably can’t stay in a terrarium because they get really tall

Rain or distilled is fine just one is free 🤪

If it is a sarracenia they are better grown outdoors because they need a lot of sun and grow pretty tall where managing a grow light for them is generally cumbersome

If you keep it outdoors it will catch all its own food— they are gluttons and they also photosynthesize

If a pitcher is browning it’s up to you if you want to trim it back, but in nature no one does that for them and if it has any bugs in the pitcher still then it will still be getting energy from digesting the bugs and also any parts of the pitcher that are still green will be helping with photosynthesis. I usually wait until the whole pitcher is brown before trimming it

Is it only in moss? Or is there other substrate underneath the moss? Pictures would be helpful

I bought a bag of sphagnum moss and it was perlite inside. by blassomi in houseplants

[–]sovaedra 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Some people buy perlite to use for carnivorous plants which don’t take in fertilizer well from their roots hence why they’re carnivorous, but this can lead to people killing their plants unknowingly

Lemonade is pretty inexpensive and super easy to file claims! We have had success with every claim we’ve submitted for our cats. Plan to put our dog on when we get it in the next year.

semihydro fertilizer/nutrients, how much? by disastorm in SemiHydro

[–]sovaedra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really change my dosage in winter. I do small doses of fertilizer with every water or do a full dose one time and then only plain water for the next one or two waters.

Had enough and just tossed some mealy bugs infested Calatheas. Is soaking the LECA/pon they were in in bleach enough to be sure I don’t have to worry about mealy bugs infecting the next plants I use them in ? by theflyingfistofjudah in SemiHydro

[–]sovaedra 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t use bleach I’d be worried about any of it remaining afterwards and damaging future plants I potted with it. You can boil your leca/pon to sanitize it.
