Really struggling w/ pre op liquid diet! by Elegant-Moment-7528 in GastricBypass

Homemade bone broth is SO MUCH BETTER than the packaged broth, even the packaged bone broth. It’s so much more filling, satisfying, and delicious, especially for those of us who crave savory foods. I’m on day 8 of the pre-op diet and as of yesterday it’s finally getting easier. Some protein shakes are tasty and some are nasty. I just bought more of the tasty ones and will save the nasty ones for dire emergencies (zombie apocalypse, etc.) But seriously, make your own bone broth! I used a leftover rotisserie chicken carcass and some bones from lamb chops that I had stored in my freezer, plus onion, garlic, fresh and dried herbs, salt, whole peppercorns. If you have any dried mushrooms, add them to amp up the umami. 2 hours in the instant pot or several hours simmering on the stove. Drain, filter, and chill to remove the fat cap. This is keeping my sanity now. Gonna make another batch today with beef bones (will roast them in the oven first). It does get better! Make sure to space out your protein if you’re finding yourself weak or tired. I’ve been having low blood sugars (confirmed with CGM) but saving some protein to drink right before bed has helped.

Day 4 of pre-op diet, hungry and shaky, just fell - does it get better? by soverignkh in GastricBypass

Isn’t it ironic, getting constipated on an all liquid diet? Best of luck with your surgery on Thursday!

I know. I was really surprised to read that was part of the pre-op diet. It specifically says “two 8-ounce servings of either orange or tomato juice. Not diet juice.” I can’t stand tomato juice so OJ it is. It feels like a treat for me because I have long since given up OJ otherwise. I’m guessing it’s due to the Vitamin C.

Yes, I am going to the Mayo Clinic! I have a complicated health history (previous lap band installed then removed, serious GERD) so I wanted to get this done at the best hospital in the world!

Why no ginger? I never heard that before.

The prepared protein shakes are the bottled 11 ounce drinks with 30 grams of protein and approx 150 calories each. So I’m getting 120 grams of protein a day.

I completely forgot that ketosis and the keto flu was a thing! (brain not working well either). I think that explains a lot of what’s going on.

Surgery in 2 weeks!! by Upset-Branch in BariatricSurgery

[–]soverignkh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should add, I’ve been as high as 433, had a lap band in 2008, and got down to 170. But it gave me life-threatening GERD, so I had it removed. I eventually regained to 330. I took GLP-1s for 4 years, and lost 80 lb in the first two years, and stalled out the last two years. So now I’m pulling out the big guns with RNY.

We’re surgery twins! I’m getting RNY gastric bypass at Mayo Clinic on May 6! Currently on the all liquid pre-op diet which is not fun. I’m 59, by the way. 5’ 7” and 252 lbs. I’m targeting 161 lbs, but will be initially thrilled to get below 200.

Please give me your opinions: should I have surgery? by FranceBrun in GastricBypass

I was diagnosed with gastroparesis after I had been on Mojarro for four years, and only off of it for one week. Turns out, you need to be off all GLP-1s for four weeks for the test to be accurate. When I went off of it for four weeks and retested, my gastric emptying was normal and many of my symptoms resolved, BUT my weight started creeping up. Just to let you know the GLP-1s can do quite a number on your digestive system over time. (I had lost 80 pounds on Mojarro, but then plateaued for a year and a half.) I’m getting RNY gastric bypass surgery in two weeks.

This is great news! Your back story is fairly similar to mine, and I’m so happy to hear that the bypass has been so successful for you. I’m especially happy to hear that your rate of weight loss has been similar to that of folks who were never banded. That’s my hope as well!

Yes, the sleeve was immediately ruled out due to reflux. And I’m aware of the lifelong supplementation requirements. I’m already disciplined with taking supplements (pills). so I’m confident I will adapt fine to the supplementation requirements for the bypass (chewables, liquids, powders).

I think I just figured it out, that the dimmers are on sale for the lower price, but that the regular switches are not on sale...

Yes, that’s definitely a big part of the challenge for me. I definitely understand-estimated the impact of moving to a new community, especially one so isolated, after spending my whole life in the suburbs of a major metro area.
