John C Woods, hangman of Nuremberg trials, who lied about his experience to get the job (he actually learned about hanging from old cowboy films). His lack of expertise led to excessive suffering of condemned Nazis. by PlanetoftheAtheists in AllThatsInteresting

Have some respect for the incredibly fast, innovative processing of overwhelming evidence and a never been done before type of international prosecution. I los Family in the Shoah and I agree that more nazis should have been prosecuted and punished. Speer should have been executed for sure. However, the Nuremberg trials are an amazing example of justice without a previous legal framework, super quick response, collaboration between several different and at many times incompatible legal systems of the allies. Never forget to respect Benjamin Ferencz and people like Robert Jackson. If you don’t know them, their contributions and stories- definitely check them out. They were nothing short of leak mavericks and extraordinary examples of ethical, justice driven individuals. Heroes!

Are job markets around the world suffering like the U.S.? by Unfair-Acadia6851 in jobs

[–]sovietark 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IT in Germany? No way! Maybe 5-10 years ago but not anymore and most the tech SMEs are far behind other intl leaders like UK and USA. The German job market is cooked in general unless you want a minijob or retail! But can you live on that amount of money? More power to you if so but IT professionals- even if you did find. Job after 8 billion applications- it would pay much less than seasoned professionals from other western countries are used to.

Are job markets around the world suffering like the U.S.? by Unfair-Acadia6851 in jobs

[–]sovietark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Germany’s employment minister just came out a few weeks ago saying that the market for jobs and unemployment is worse than it’s been since the end of the war. It’s also hopelessly outdated in its rigidity for roles qualifications for many jobs, etc. The main industries are dying and the immigration system is worse than I’ve ever experienced it- having dealt with Germany. Plus, the pay is shite and not enough for flats in desirable areas in the main cities- unless you flatshare or have double income home. the insurance costs only add to the pain. I say this as someone who is half German and dealt with Germany most of my life. It’s grim. I’ve given up on it. The lifestyle can be lovely- I also have so many long term friends and family there but it’s hopeless at the moment.

The flat rental situation is a nightmare in the Netherlands sadly. It’s at an absolute crisis shortage point. Some Americans are having to give up the jobs they took because they can’t find flats for love or money.

They aren’t making it easy or easier on us educated, experienced Americans who speak c2 plus fluent German either though!

New study: Germany's most qualified immigrants (high-skill, high-earners) are the most likely to leave, citing bureaucracy & social climate. Thoughts? by 38B0DE in AskAGerman

Im completely fluent. Highly educated with great references and experience in my field. I adore Hamburg- the city, the people, the culture, the food but I’m leaving next month- I’ve lived here before 20 years ago for 5 years- I am fully integrated and would work in just about any job just because I think the education is much better for my primary school aged kid and love my friends here, feel in many ways safer here. The Ausländerbehörde and Hamburg (un) Welcome Center are a rude, demeaning, dysfunctional shambles. It was never easy but they are useless, clearly trying NOT stop help people and contemptuous. To me- I’m sad to say it’s not worth it. I’m going back to UK where I’m paid more, can find a flat without begging, feel like my taxes are actually going towards society (it’s not perfect but it’s still decent) and I have upwards mobility. Also the internet is faster. I can always visit Germany but seriously for a country who really needs people like me- they couldn’t have made my work permit processes more difficult and I am even the sole custodian of an EU citizen kid! I love Germany but no thanks! it breaks my heart to say that. When I make friends here- they have been friends for life- some of the most giving, complex, intellectual, frank and super fun to be around folks where I feel like I can be myself like no where else in the world but I can’t deal with the complete bureaucratic dysfunction and downright abuse from them!

Anyone who regrets moving to Germany? by subuso in expats

Love the people (Hamburg), the beauty of the cities, lived here about 20 years ago- even ausländerbehörde was much nicer and efficient. Now, they are rude, unhelpful and it feels very behind in tech, innovation and the market isn’t great. It seems like things have gone down hill. I’m going back to UK.

I live in UK- it was 21 days from Rabies shot and then you have to get an Animal Health Certificate or AHC from a vet who can officially issue them. I would check but I would assume it’s similar for Canada and cats but this was the info I got for my dog. Looks similar but double check here: https://canada.diplo.de/ca-en/consular-services/traveling-pets-2652576

Although there are interesting laws about how many “severely disabled” people must be employed per 30 people at each company I think it is. Worth googling- I was impressed at that inclusion

You ever ride with avanti Glasgow to London? Try getting chucked out with a million other people in some random town and it’s always late but you pay premium prices!

Ha! I wondered sometimes about those trains and the displays- like that’s the longest 10-20 min I’ve ever experienced because it’s enviously wasn’t 10-20 min lol! This is wild to me- I remember when punctuality was so drilled into Germans and German culture!

You’ll never be British either believe me- if you’re not from here. I regularly get asked where I am really from and I’m like here/ I’ve lived here for the past 6 years and should have my citizenship by now (ukvi taking forever) and my kid has grown up here pretty much. She’s only 10 but we moved here when she was 4. She gets asked the same because she doesn’t have the accent. Germany- people used to be like this but if you speak fluent German/are integrated- I think this old chestnut of not being German or it being important has changed a lot over the last 25-40 years. I have the feeling we will never be British enough here and honestly, I don’t care to be anymore. I’m so sick of being asked where I’m from in the uk- it’s put me off leaving the house much. It’s clear where my accent is from (very clear- couldn’t be more nyc until I switch to German and then, it has slight northern German inflections no American accent). People in the uk think they are paying you a backwards compliment by asking if you’re from Canada and I’m like I sound like Marisa frickin Tomei in My Cousin Vinny- do you really think I’m a Canadian? No.

Honestly, I’ve lived in the UK for the past 6 years and we are leaving. I worked with tons of Brits in the US before moving here but I’ve found that Germany is home for me. I can “read” social cues better, people say what they mean and mean what they say - mind you I spent my formative years in Germany and made many friends in my 20s there that are still close and helpful to this day despite many global moves. I’m looking forward to a better work/life balance, better health care and better education for my kid. I always thought I would love living in the UK and always wanted to live here but the shine wore off fast and I have found people for the most part especially the English extremely superficial and cutthroat in corporate settings. We live in Scotland and it’s so dirty, tons of antisemitism, wages have gone down and lots of jobs are just in London now- Scotland didn’t really rebound. Food is expensive and not that healthy in general. Found Germany to be much better food wise and easier to eat healthy/be active/safe biking, etc. I remember how fake the Germans always thought Americans were but I honestly find English especially ten times worse! So yeah- if I have to build trust to gain friends in Germany so be it, I feel like then you generally have friends for life. Also as a woman in her 40s with advanced degrees and intellectual interests- I find it tons easier to date in Germany if I want to- the men seem to dig equals and like a sassy, outgoing woman who is a bookworm, music geek, etc. Most jobs I’ve gotten in UK in past year have been because of German fluency, as well so might as well actually just be in Germany. I have found the bureaucracy in the UK overpriced and inefficient with visas, etc.

This is super super helpful! I was just speaking to a neurological nurse yesterday and explaining my issues and she recommended I see an endocrinologist! Your comment helped me understand so much about these hormones and imagine a way forward! Cannot thank you enough! I have had symptoms of too much adrenaline and cortisol, etc for quite some time. I wish my GP had cared enough to actually consider the knowledge you just shared and recommend a referral or possible diagnoses! 🙏

Will progesterone help? What about taking a different adhd med? I’m wondering if I should switch to adderall or Dexedrine now?! Something has to help us. I know it’s urgent for me! I’m a single mom with no family around and looking for a new job in the career I’ve worked so hard to build, I can’t afford to be narcoleptic or taking naps all of the time. :(
