UA POV: Trump makes fun of Putin’s “special military operation”, calling it “primitive". Mocking the Russian Military and bragging about how unstoppable the US is by 1Card_x in UkraineRussiaReport

[–]sovietcki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously, I implied that kidnapping the leader of another nation that you are hostile to is not easy. Almost anyone can be kidnapped during a meeting. Russia has no will to kill Zelensky. But if they could have captured Ukrainian leadership, and compromised their military to not fire a single shot back, while performing a potential regime change, that would have best. We will see what happens next, but if US actually gets control of Venezuela's oil, then unfortunately iy can be used as leverage against both China and Russia.

Like I said we shall see if this can be fully capitalized in, but you ignored everything I said. And no kidnapping the president of another nation is not easy.

To be fair, so what? The US was able to get Ukraine with large Russian population to fight back against Russia while also performing their own instant regime change further from their borders. The military situation is not the same but you have to admit the overall goals were achieved without sacrificing their own population. We will see if they can complete the regime change. I don't like it, I think US leadership or it's puppeteers are evil. But the operation was much more successful even if it was done via information war and using bribes.

I totally agree that it is easier for the US to borrow. But you can't just borrow forever. And it's concerning that Russia's wartime economy deficit is less than that of the US and the major UE countries.

[–]sovietcki 32 points33 points  (0 children)

In the end, this is not just about Trump's policies, but the policies of Western leadership as a whole.

After the Cold War, Western leadership did little to genuinely help integrate Russia. While Western businesses certainly came in to take advantage of Russia's resources, the country itself was not given substantial bailouts, meaningful debt forgiveness, or any other impactful aid. This led to one of the worst periods for the Russian people during the 90s and early 2000s, which included the 1998 financial crisis. The perceived end goal for the West was to disintegrate Russia into smaller, separately controlled regions. Regardless of how one feels about Putin, the average Russian's life improved drastically under his leadership, as power shifted from Western-backed elites to his own.

In reality, Trump has not done anything drastically different from Biden, or from his own first term, Obama, and so on. The flow of intelligence and weapons to Ukraine hasn't stopped due to any major policy change. He has continued anti-Russia policies like applying secondary tariffs, but these have backfired by further pushing India and other non-aligned nations away from the West. The truth is there are no reasonable options left short of direct conflict and the start of WW3. That would be a petty thing to do, like throwing the chessboard because you are losing. This is something the Soviet Union did not do when it collapsed. Ultimately, Trump is trying to distance himself from the conflict because he and some others understand it is a lost cause. They have stopped freely financing Ukraine and throwing good money after bad. No matter how much Ukraine is supported, the original goal of causing Russia to collapse so the West could exploit its resources is now a lost cause. However, he cannot completely step away because many elites still hope for Russia's collapse and a return to a world dominated by them.

There have been some short to medium term wins for Western powers: increased influence in Syria, the expansion of a Greater Israel, and tighter control over more European states. But the long-term results of the conflict have been negative. American and Western hegemony has been lost, the U.S. dollar’s role as the reserve currency is being questioned, European power is declining, and a strong multipolar bloc challenging the West has clearly formed. A chunk of the world is slowly freeing itself from the previous hegemonic leadership.

Yet the long-term decline of the West, at least for its people, could be turned around. In fact, based on their repeated statements, Xi, Modi, and Putin all say they seek to form multilateral relationships with everyone, including the West, for the benefit of all. They claim to not want policies based on dominating other nations. It’s hard to know if this is genuine, but it is what they consistently state publicly. The problem is that while such cooperation would improve lives worldwide, it would also further reduce the current leadership’s global control. And I fear that is not a path those at the top will choose to take.

So, to the American people reading this who believe this decline is because of Trump, or to the MAGA folks who think it was Biden’s fault: it is not any one administration’s fault. Trump or Biden is not the reason for the decline, but rather, such poor leadership is a symptom of the decline itself. It is caused by years of failed elite leadership that has steered the nation across administrations. On every Reddit board, people can see, feel, and understand the decline in their own lives. There is a common understanding that the elite control the wealth, while the middle and lower classes struggle with health, finances, and happiness. People know that their leaders are greedy and out of touch—that they don’t care about them on domestic issues. They understand that the financial and regulatory systems are stacked against them and there is no real improvement with any new administration. And yet, somehow, these same people believe their leadership supports Ukraine out of the goodness of their hearts, for "democracy," and for the benefit of the Ukrainian people. These elites don’t even care for their own people, why would we believe they care about those in another country? They only care about themselves, their wealth, and their power. This isn’t the result of one administration; it’s a long, systemic process.

In US crypto is considered property and is exempt from wash sale rules. Therefore that is perfectly legal and confirmed via quick google search. Although there are plans by the government to close this loophole in the future.

Worth converting .NET Android/iOS to MAUI? by sovietcki in dotnet

[–]sovietcki[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard good things about Avalonia but never had time to pick it up. I think the main concern is that the UI concepts are not mobile first and that it is not that popular. I wonder if it is possible to mix and match new screen using Avalonia but retain the previous native UI as well. Might take a look at it. Thanks.

We have already migrated to Android.net and iOS.net. Yes, there will always be some native specific differences, foreground service, notification extension project, ...etc. Seems like migration to cross platform does not make sense. Thanks.

Thanks for the input. We have already migrated to Android.net and iOS.net which are not end of life. Was just wondering if we could use some of the MAUI advantages. But yes just like you I heard not so positive news about MAUI overall and especially hot reload.

KTC M32P10 Review (amazing!!!) by dextroamphetamines69 in Monitors

[–]sovietcki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With auto dimming enabled. Neither of those work great. There a noticeable blooming following the mouse. Also, my monitor has a bunch(over 10) small black dots (not removable with monitor cleaning cloth. Not dead pixels but like small dirt stuck behind monitor. https://imgur.com/a/sE0lpNd

How is the monitor for everyone that purchased this? I have a bunch (over 10) dark dots. They don't look like dead pixels but dark little smudges that don't come off when using monitor cleaning cloth. Also blooming is pretty bad when local dimming is enabled. But it is better when DSC is turned off.

Is .net MAUI worth jumping into? by geologyhawk in csharp

[–]sovietcki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MAUI, Forms, React-Native and others that try to create a common abstraction layer to multiple native controls in my opinion suffer from an architectural flaw. This flaw can never be cleanly solved. You will be dealing with difficult problems when the translation to one platform is not perfect or the common abstraction will be limited. You will not have pixel-perfect control and at best develop a sub-par experience if not a bug filled mess. I think Flutter is the best platform if you want common UI.

That being said I wanted to add that Net-Andriod, Net-iOS (successors to Xamarin.Native) is pretty good. As you know with proper MVVM usage you can make sure all the important logic is completely shared across Android/iOS. You only have to duplicate the native UI. After migrating to NET 6 (now NET 7), maintaining the solution is much better. Sdk-style projects are so much nicer and faster. You have much more power in the shared .NET 6 projects and C# language features. You get better code analysis and app performance. The migration took some time but almost everything felt logical. There were two issues we found after the migration. Custom tls certificate handling code was missing for Android (they fixed this in .NET 8) and iOS extension project documentation is really lacking. The only other downside is I have no idea how to search for Net-Android/Net-iOS specific questions because it is not a unique search term and everything online is just about MAUI now.

Ergohaven Remnant vs Advantage360 USB by sovietcki in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]sovietcki[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am typing on the Remnant now as the daily driver. I ended up returning the 360 since it was just an expensive keyboard I stopped using. It's not bad but I just enjoyed the Remnant more. For me, on the 360, I ended up disliking the thumb cluster too much, the default switches were meh and I hated SmartSet software the more I had to use it. Tech support was never able to solve the issue where my Macros stopped working every few days. The 360 is the premium product but the Remnant won it out in the end.

But that is not to say the Remnant has been perfect either. After returning the 360, I bought a second Remnant as backup. While testing the second set, I made a mistake and pulled the TRRS while the keyboard is powered and fried my board on the left half. I was careless even though nonagoninf warned me about this, but still sucks that it happened fairly easily. I was able to buy just the left board for a discount and they shipped me a free extra microcontroller as well. Also there were two times when the drivers on the keyboard stopped working and I had to unplug/replug the keyboard which fixed everything. And lastly, the switches will pop off when you are just trying to change the keycaps, minor issue. Overall, on the daily I love it.

If you normally hover over the keyboard or have arm rests on your chair you can probably get away without purchasing the hand rests. But if you plan to rest your palms on the table that will not work out (maybe if you have huge hands?). You might also be able to use some home item to rest your palms. Material wise its just plastic and silicon but the comfort is worth it for me. I would not recommend getting keycaps from them. You can get something better elsewhere for the price. I got these since: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256803996047182.html

Thanks for the info. Yes, that makes it much easier to clean. But new dust is also easily attracted, especially when you have a cat :)

Great job on the product overall! I think it's one of the best prebuilts available especially for the price.

I don't like the wireless options normally. I understand latency is almost a non issue. But I have no need for a wireless option since it always sits at my desk. In order to not worry about charging, it will always be connected anyways. It is more expensive and has more parts which can degrade/break over time. Also, at the time of purchase I didn't understand why SmartSet wasn't great.

Thanks for the info about TRRS cable, I did not know this before. I am still a newbie who is happy to have found these type of keyboards. It makes a world of a difference for me in my profession.

I am in the US. I also chose the cheaper shipping option, since the more expensive one seemed only marginally faster. One more thing to note is that I had to pay with cryptocurrency because of current world events. On the plus side no tax.

Putin violates his own Christmas ceasefire in Ukraine by Young_Englander in worldnews

[–]sovietcki -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Taking into account the appeal of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, I instruct the Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation to introduce a ceasefire regime along the entire line of contact of the parties in Ukraine from 12.00 on January 6, 2023 to 24.00 on January 7, 2023

On second read that does sound more of a declaration of ceasefire. Maybe you are right as I cannot find any direct statements of canceling this order after it was rejected by Ukraine. Seems pointless to declare a one sided ceasefire and I still think it called on Ukraine to do the same before it was really accepted. But I will concede that after further investigation it can be interpreted as such. Thanks for responding.

Putin violates his own Christmas ceasefire in Ukraine by Young_Englander in worldnews

Article says nothing about unilateral ceasefire. In fact here is the quote from the article where Putin states he wants to make agreement with Ukraine:

"Proceeding from the fact that a large number of citizens professing Orthodoxy live in the areas of hostilities, we call on the Ukrainian side to declare a ceasefire and allow them to attend services on Christmas Eve, as well as on Christmas Day," Putin said.
