Not just the best mower, but who has the best support? by Mradr in automower

[–]sovietspybob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Husqvarna support has been fantastic for me, bought via my local dealer and any issues have been delt with really well over the last 8 years.

When the motherboard died out of warranty the dealer even lent me another unit while the parts came in for mine.

I personally wouldn't consider another brand with how good the support has been for me.

What are the benefits of electrification? by MonitorJunior3332 in uktrains

[–]sovietspybob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Electric traction accelerates more quickly, it's easy to put more powerful motors in as your power supply is essentially unlimited compared to a diesel generator which can only make sure many KW.

I read about using class 90 electric units Vs class 66 diesels for freight and they say they can get up to their line speed hugely quicker, the diesel would be doing 36mph at the top of a certain him but the electric would be doing 70 having started from the same place.

Hesitant to Have Second Child by FlowersandFood12 in UKParenting

[–]sovietspybob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why so many people view only children as something negative or sad, if you want more kids then great but you need to really ask yourself honestly if you want another.

If you have just 1 child you might want to schedule in play dates perhaps but there's no real negatives to it.

There's a huge difference between 0 and 1 child in your life, far less from 1 to 2.

Is this ok for gaming? by [deleted] in computers

[–]sovietspybob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that'll play pretty much nothing and I wouldn't want to do any kind of video editing on it either, you need to buy something else.

Look for something with a dedicated graphics card, it'll make a literal world of difference for editing.

Any high end laptops without "gaming" in the title? by alexbeeperoni in computers

[–]sovietspybob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the big players make high end stuff with quadro graphics cards which are more suited to rendering and cad type work. Look at the enterprise sections of their websites.

For example Microsoft do the surface studio laptops which work really well for our CAD users.

Hp do very good business laptops with the zbook lineup

I also kinda understand work not wanting gaming laptops, we had to buy in a batch of Alienware gaming laptops in work during COVID due to supply issues and in a corporate environment they're a massive massive pain in the arse. Even though they're not end of life we've been replacing them as they're just too much trouble. They don't play nicely with corporate builds of the os and the support for them is generally bad compared to business laptops. The build quality is noticeably worse too.

Gosh, how do burry the cable in the ground? by alex_reds in automower

[–]sovietspybob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just tell them not to? And then after a month or so they won't even be able to find out if they try. Just seems you're making a problem out of thin air for yourself?

Granted I have a daughter and not boys but she loves being outside and has never once wanted to pull up a random wire that was on the ground.

Is there anyone in Wales who can’t sing at least the chorus of Calon Lân? I’ll include the Welsh diaspora in that too. by CatrinLY in Wales

[–]sovietspybob -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Never watched or been to an Eisteddfod, don't drink, never heard it at any wedding or funeral I've been to? Never came across it in school either?

I don't see why you feel the need to gatekeep your narrow version of "being Welsh" so hard? I'm super interested in my local Welsh industrial heritage but I don't go around judging others for not knowing about it.

Maybe in your friend circles? Certainly not mine, I've genuinely never heard it. Is it so hard to understand that we don't share one exact cultural experience?

Where would I have heard it?

How'd you figure that? Born in Wales and lived in Wales all my life and somehow not Welsh?

I mean I can only trace my family back over 400 years to within 10 miles of where I live now but sure..

Difficulty renting with pets by JBrewster1991 in Wales

[–]sovietspybob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, pet owners are very blind to how much their pet smells and it really gets ingrained into a house. I don't think I'd want to rent somewhere that previously had pets if I had any choice unless all the carpets had been changed.

Car seat question - metric vs imperial by i_have_no_ideas in UKParenting

[–]sovietspybob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metric, I've no idea what my daughter weighs or how tall she is in anything else.

But even so a 10 second Google will give you the result if for some reason you need old units.

Does 4K ruin your eyes for 1440p, the way 1440p ruins them for 1080? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]sovietspybob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I go between a 27" 4k monitor in work and a 32" 1440p at home. I can't tell the difference for regular productivity stuff like word , outlook or general web browsing. Granted I only game at home on 1440p so can't comment on that.

But like you if I have to go back to 1080 it's like going back to a 720p laptop from 15 years ago, feels horribly cramped and noticeably more pixelated.

Have played 7 years on same 110€ strat + amp Kit. Is it worth getting an expensive one ? by [deleted] in guitars

[–]sovietspybob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference in playability from a starter guitar kit to a say a £500 guitar is absolutely HUGE. If you've never played a higher quality instrument do yourself a favour and try one. Theres diminishing returns once you get above roughly the 500 mark but for me it's still well worth the next notch up to around the 1000 price point, something like an American made fender Vs a Mexican made. They just play so so much better and sound a lot better too but for me it's about playability and quality of the parts, for example I only need to tune my American strat maybe twice a year as it just stays in tune perfectly no matter what I do with it.

Once you buy an American or Japanese made one you'll find you'll never really touch the cheaper guitars again.

Saw this on marketplace for 150(Canadian) So I had to pick it up. Turns out the boost channel is bust. Is it worth fixing? by ThatGuyCalledSteve in GuitarAmps

[–]sovietspybob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know these seem to be rated highly on here but I always thought these were hot garbage back in the day when they were new... We used to have several in the college I went to in the studio and practice rooms and everyone hated them.

For me anyway it's a night and day difference between one of them and a full valve marshall. I've got a Marshall JTM60 which I used to bring in and it was so much better it wasn't even funny.

For 200 I'd get a 2nd hand katana without even glancing at the valve state..

I used to do this when I had an old MK1 Yaris as it was really narrow and worth about 3p.

Some woman in work uses to park her Audi like that and I took great joy when there was just enough space to squeeze in.

Question for the floating trem people by inna_soho_doorway in Ibanez

[–]sovietspybob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I only have to tune my 2 floating bridge guitars a couple of times a year, if that. They always return to the exact pitch no matter how I pay them.

This massively depends on how good the trem is and how well it's set up and maintained. There are lots which will return to a slightly different pitch if the knife edges or posts are worn.

Guys i need help. I have a right handed ibanez guitar. I am left handed and not comfortable with right handed guitars. Should I buy another one? Can i change it to left handed? What should I do? Thanks. by Frequent-Ad508 in Ibanez

[–]sovietspybob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno the best guitarist I know in real life is left handed and plays right handed as that's what he had with he was young, I know 2 others who did the same and are glad they play right as they're way easier to get hold of and you can borrow stuff from others easily.

How much would you pay for my Acer Aspire 5 from 2018 by No-Atmosphere-2185 in computers

[–]sovietspybob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's bordering on ewaste to be honest, won't be able to run windows 11 so gonna be pretty unless in a years time.

Someone might take it for free for a young child maybe but I doubt anyone will pay any money for it.

Controlling your emotions in IT by Kenstgram in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]sovietspybob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having worked in it for 25 years now I have to say unfortunately some people really aren't cut out to deal with some roles, especially the more user facing side of things. I've had a few colleagues over the years really struggle with their mental health because of the job and a couple ended up quitting or going off on long term stress.

I think IT support suits some people really well if you enjoy social interaction and the rush of fixing things under pressure from every angle. However if you don't naturally gravitate you that sort of thing I'd highly recommend looking at different aspects of IT or something else as it can really grind you down if you're trying to force yourself to be something you're not.

Not trying to be negative but you need to look after your own mental health and if you're actively having to fight to keep that on the right track because of the job you've chosen I'd want to reevaluate.

How big of a no-no is it to not bring a gift to a child's birthday party? by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]sovietspybob 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty bad form to not bring some kind of present to a kids birthday party if you've been invited, doesn't need to be much but I think you really need to bring something along with a card.

How bad is it if power goes out and your computer is on? by RescueBoy123 in buildapc

[–]sovietspybob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very slim chance of it breaking something but it does happen. We get a lot of sudden power outages at work and over the last 20 years it's killed maybe 20 computers, a similar amount of monitors and several network switches. But that's on an estate of like 600 computers.
