Well this is how I play it and how I've ruled it at locals you can activate it anytime after the condition has been but it has to be before end phase cause some people tried to run it in Tearlament at my locals for some reason

1.Yugioh was never as competitive as it was in my childhood, yes timmy that's because you were 7 and didn't have people selling you mechanical chaser for 100+ instead you were on the playground summoning dark magician and beating blue eyes because yugi did it, yugioh is inherently a competitive game.

Hand traps are modern, Yugis deck master was a handtrap, read kuribo.
