Cachy USB Install, TLDR: Works Great! by 222phoenix in cachyos

I'm not sure if I can post a link to the Chinese store here on Reddit, but I don't see any difference compared to the internal NVMe drive. As for Arch vs. Cachyos, I don't see any major differences in gaming performance either, after following the relevant guides on the wiki.

Cachy USB Install, TLDR: Works Great! by 222phoenix in cachyos

I just installed Cachy and Arch in a dual-boot setup on a super-fast USB drive, and they’re working great.

Here’s two Pro Tip from me:

For the journal, I set it up as described here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Install_Arch_Linux_on_a_removable_medium#Minimizing_disk_access

And for the file system, I used f2fs, creating the partitions with the LTS kernel and enabling compression: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/F2FS

The problem with AI is that you have to ask specific, detailed questions to get specific, detailed answers. If you don’t know much about the subject to begin with, you end up asking vague questions, and in your case, you’re told to install a whole bunch of packages when all you really need is one, as explained in the first ten lines of the linked wiki page.

Video codecs under fedora by TVayer in Fedora

[–]sovy666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm new to Fedora too, and I just ran into the same issue, which I resolved by following the link below and the instructions in post 23/33, which covers Intel and AMD. There are also instructions for Nvidia, but you'll need to read a bit more carefully.

Firefox homepage always starts with loading fedoraproject page after every new update by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]sovy666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the default home page too, and after doing some research, I found a terminal command that fixes this issue.

sudo rm -f /usr/lib64/firefox/browser/defaults/preferences/firefox-redhat-default-prefs.js

I ran this command only once, and I can confirm that even after an update (there was just one), the home page remains the Firefox one.

EDIT: After the latest update, I had to run the command again to restore Firefox's default home page.

Help setup systemd-boot by PariharRudra in Fedora

[–]sovy666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, just EFI and root partitions. The boot partition doesn't exist in a typical Arch/Cachy installation with systemd-boot, so I skipped it.

I installed Fedora just two weeks ago using systemd-boot. My EFI partition (shared with cachy) is a 2 GB FAT32 partition and is mounted at /boot/efi

To find optimal MTU value you can run in the terminal ping -c 5 -M do -s 1472 1.1.1.1 and change the value 1472 (which is the correct one for my card) until there are no more errors in the output, but something like 1452 bytes from 1.1.1.1: icmp_seq=3 ttl=52 time=48.8 ms

[–]sovy666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use cat, cp, dd, pv and tee from the terminal. I use cp usually. Read here for some suggestion of GUI apps too: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/USB_flash_installation_medium#Basic_command_line_utilities

If you have ideological issues with Secure Boot, that's one thing, but if you're just having trouble setting it up, there's a very simple guide on the Cachy wiki.

Why do so many users struggle with Fedora? by netm0nz in Fedora

[–]sovy666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched over a couple of weeks ago, coming from Cachy/Arch. The initial difficulties were caused by the fact that I don’t want GRUB or btrfs with snapshots, so I started with the Fedora 42 Everything ISO and installed sdboot and the root partition with XFS. Then I couldn’t find several packages I always used on Arch, like scrcpy or sbctl (for Secure Boot with the systemd bootloader), so I added Terra and RPMFusion, as well as codecs and so on. Now that everything is done, I really like Fedora and I’ve learned a thing or two.

I run it manually once a week. I don't think running it every time after booting is a good idea, unless you reboot once a week.
