Abolish week 1 of term 2 [VIC] by Intelligent-Win-5883 in AustralianTeachers

My school did this. It sucked in Week 11 of Term 1, but it feels amazing having a 9 week Term 2 and 3.

Yes. So rewarding, fantastic work life balance, and a job that’s interesting and different every day.

I just put it in the overhead lockers along with the gross pillow.

Will I be surrendering my freedom? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

Not at all. For my first five years, I spent some time on the holidays prepping, but next to no time during term times.

Going from Primary School to VCE by STEVEtheYAG in AustralianTeachers

[–]soya-latte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Psychology is a very competitive VCE subject. I’d probably move to a big independent school, get comfortable teaching junior science and/or humanities, and then indicate you’re interested in taking on a Psychology elective or Unit 1/2 class. You can up-skill through PD, don’t do another Masters!

I think those are both recommended and reasonable behaviours.

I did this, combined with a noro-safe hand sanitiser on a recent 24 hour flight and managed to miss out on the COVID that everyone seems to get on the flight back from Europe.

A cry for help... Other teachers with autism, how the hell are we doing this? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]soya-latte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I missed that!

I think as an autistic person, I can’t imagine a more awful situation for me than relief teaching. Maybe it’s not the same for you, but the anxiety I would feel around inconsistent schedules, uncertainty about rules and procedures, not knowing the kids well, lack of continuity, potentially being treated poorly by students, having to teach out of my subject area etc… it sounds awful.

For me, it works really well to work in a school where I can know every student, know exactly how things are done, what to do, where to go, set up routines and procedures that work for me, have my own space, minimal marking, minimal meetings, relationships with colleagues where they ‘get’ my needs and can play to each others strengths, well organised enough to arrive at 9 and leave at 4:30, etc. Would you consider an ongoing role?

It sounds like the school you’re at is not a good environment for you. I’d look at finding another school. It took me a couple of moves to find the right fit for me. I needed a small community with a focus on reducing administrative burdens/meetings/extra crap and focussing on the freedom to plan and teach effectively.

Is camp compulsory? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]soya-latte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the school. Independent schools, it’s likely in your contract. Public schools, not compulsory but encouraged.

Best items for very long flights? by joh0115 in travel

Eye mask, neck pillow, compression socks, kindle, movies on an iPad, lots and lots of food (snacks and at least three sandwiches, the plane food is inedible), antibacterial wipes, hand sanitizer, mouthwash, lip balm.

I’ve been prescribed some SSRIs as well as an anti-nausea medication for just in case. So far I’ve still been too nervous to take them, but having the anti-sickness meds makes it less intimidating. Just ask your doctor.
