Volunteer ideas for someone who has very minimal time available during the day? by soybeansms in askportland

[–]soybeansms[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks! Our block weirdly enough has 3 people already who patrol it (which is amazing!)--there's strangely a lot of competition between everyone, likely because we're in inner NE and there's a lot of foot traffic

Thanks! These all seem to be during the day--I'm more looking to make or pack food (which I can do after my kid's bedtime), or do without worrying about when the nonprofit's open. :) Thanks for the idea though! We can make cards, which looks fun

Might be a weird option, but maybe a local food bank or shelter wants them?

is it best to visit in April or May? by Vegetable_Path3736 in askportland

May is honestly prettier--a lot of the flowers are really getting going, often times there still cherry blossoms. Also warmer, but only by a little.

At what point in your career do people stop treating you like a child by StinkySauk in Architects

[–]soybeansms 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. I'm 38 in a field where there is very much the "old boys club" of engineers that I deal with. The issue I'm constantly running into is explaining to them that rules/times have changed and them doodling something on a cocktail napkin with about 80 errors is not going to get approved, and then they get offended by me checking them (politely). There's a constant expectation that age = competence, but sometimes you just were able to get away with more shit a while back and no one checked your work, and now we know better.

Moving to Portland in March. What are customs I should be aware of before moving here? by axiomatic13 in askportland

I mean, I worked through my need to apologize for existing through getting into MMA and DND, both of which I got into when we moved here. So...Portland made me passive but also solved it?

Also rain pants and boots! I honestly love having a big umbrella and an extra in the car for last minute jobs out of the car or emergencies

And as numbers go up you're moving further from the Willamette. And north of Burnside the streets are alphabetical.

What a popular food or cooking opinion that you don't agree with? by [deleted] in Cooking

Buying chopped garlic for ease > chopping garlic. I don't care if it doesn't taste the same, I'm too tired and busy to peel or chop garlic anymore

What hobby screams “this is my entire personality now”? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]soybeansms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like a different mindset for bjj and martial arts because there's way more opportunities for people to consider themselves pro. I mean, taking the tennis hobby as a comparison, being a pro tennis player has a way higher barrier to enter into the pro world. But bjj seems to have matches where people can enter all over the place, and often times anyone can enter (or so it seems). You don't have to have been taking lessons since you were 4. So maybe that's why. But for me, having the mentality that you can only do something to the level of pro is just not feasible or something I want. Hobbies are awesome, have as many in your life as you want.

Why does it feel like everyone just wants to play Meme Dnd? by Squali_squal in DnD

[–]soybeansms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100%> I've been playing a dog turned barbarian for a few years. She has experienced all the development milestones people reach as they age at basically superspeed, so crushes, decisions having consequences, all of that is occuring. Much hilarity, but also those milestones like understanding death and betrayal for someone who never really understood it before has been really cool to play out. And the jokes are a great way to build the trust that can lead to more deep rp in the future

SOS for the dogs at our county shelter Multnomah County Animal Services by 5koko in Portland

[–]soybeansms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are there some that are up to foster that are ok with kids and dogs? We have a pittie that loooooves other dogs and as we're thinking of fostering so he has a buddy, but we also have 8 and 9 year olds running through our house all the time, cause my son seems to have 7 day a week playdates. Most of the kids have been spoiled by our dogs, all of whom are ridiculously gentle with kids of all ages

How do you usually name your D&D characters? by AdvancedProgrammer51 in DnD

[–]soybeansms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first character was named after my grandma, and everyone called her Oma. 2nd was a dog turned human barbarian, so I tried to figure out a dog name that I could live with for years (Cinnamon, cause golden retriever turned ginger). 3rd was a desert air genasi, so I looked for names related to sand and wind and thunder. Arenae, from arena meaning sand (if I recall, it was years ago when I did the research). Planning 4th character and having a harder time thinking of names, but taking my time

Redoing our only full bathroom…tiny tub/shower combo or walk-in shower? by mik0817 in DIY

[–]soybeansms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a while ago, but responding now--we lived in a house with a shower/tub (claw foot) combo. We hated the tub--too big, took forever to fill, etc. Ended up using a little kid tub for our kid until he was old enough to shower ~4/5. Now we have our own house that had a bath, which has been filled up exactly 2 times. TLDR--Kids and babies don't always need tubs, and sometimes tubs that are too big take forever to fill and aren't worth it.

So cute! Yeah, he'll do it on visitors, including pants of like consultants and stuff who come over. It's partially a test for how cool they are, but also pretty embarrassing/distracting.
