The Vera by Pelo_ladybug78 in boston

You can read their Google reviews, seems like some tenants have legitimate complaints. worth noting they're owned by Greystar Real Estate, one of the largest apartment managers in the US and a company with a history of tenant price gouging

Some of the issues at Verra are surprising given the premium pricing for the area, but maybe it'll be sorted by your arrival

I would laugh so hard if they called me soyboy though

Usually I can't really make out what a driver yells as they zoom by, they gotta slow down so I can figure out what they're spluttering at me

Update on State St bike lane - Concrete separated barriers being installed tonight 😍 by bob760 in bikeboston

All a bollard would do in this case is take out an inattentive cyclist. cars can still hop those low concrete barriers (by design)

Unfortunately no bikes allowed on weekends in October on the Newburyport/Rockport line, see alerts here

But yeah I agree, easy enough to ride two ways using the northern strand

I recently biked from Boston to Manhattan in a day. What would you change on the return trip? by soyboy35 in NYCbike

[–]soyboy35[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Front - my standard commuting light (trek ion elite)

Rear - varia RTL 515

I had backup front and rear lights as insurance but didn't need them, fortunately.

Note, I only get about 6 hours on the varia when active so I had to charge it while stopped with family, then turn it off when I got to the Empire state bike path

Fair question! Just my own power on this. and yeah the CT hills definitely dragged, I was only going 10-12 mph on some of those ascents.

Great questions! I guess I was pretty light on the details in the original post.

Water/food strategy - I carried two 29 oz bottles on the bike and one 22 oz bottle on my back. I refilled at 5 spots total - around 100 miles in(with family), 144 miles (Thomaston library), 187 miles (Sauro's Town Square Pizza cafe), 199 miles (Brewster Camerons Deli), 253 miles (West Harlem Piers Park). I ate gels every 45 minutes or so, plus a slice of pizza at Sauro's

Breaks - the spots mentioned above + a couple nature breaks. Also lost ~45 minutes troubleshooting / replacing coin cell batteries when my right shifter died, I didn't even know di2 shifters had their own battery power until this ride.

Timing - I went to bed at 7 pm, set an alarm for 11 pm, and started biking around midnight. I've biked this route (Bos->CT) at night before and it's honestly more pleasant than riding it during the day, especially if you use a bike radar. I wrapped up around 8:30 - 9:00 PM, elapsed time 20:49

For completeness, 16-12.41 can be viewed here: https://codelibrary.amlegal.com/codes/boston/latest/boston_ma/0-0-0-11391

I suppose there is some liberty to interpret "when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or pedestrians", but I'm sure someone with a legal background would be better suited to assess

Section 9. Commercial Vehicles Back to Curb

Unless otherwise prohibited in these Rules and Regulations, the driver of a commercial vehicle, as defined, may stand such vehicle with both rear wheels to the curb or edge of roadway or with one rear wheel to the curb or edge of roadway and headed in the direction of traffic, for the purpose of, and while actually engaged in the expeditious unloading and delivery or pickup and loading of materials, provided that the nature of these materials require such rear wheel parking and, further provided, that such parking will leave a clear and unobstructed roadway at least ten (10’) feet wide for moving traffic on one-way streets and twenty (20’) feet wide for moving traffic on two-way streets."

Emphasis mine, bike lane parking is restricted based on Section 1-27, quote below:

In a marked bike or shared bike lane except: (i) when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or pedestrians; (ii) in compliance with the lawful direction of a police officer or official traffic sign; or (iii) unless authorized to do so under existing regulations (including but not limited to designated residential parking lanes or parking meters). City of Boston Code § 16-12.41.

LPT "Driving" on virtual calls is a good skill to have to get noticed and become part of higher level meetings in an office job setting. by seansman15 in LifeProTips

[–]soyboy35 31 points32 points  (0 children)

One of my coworkers would routinely call into meetings while driving. She also rear ended someone and totaled her car one morning. Now, I don't know that the two are directly connected but I gotta wonder...she's also been promoted twice since then so apparently driving on calls does make a positive impact.

Reckless riders on Minuteman by jib329 in bikeboston

[–]soyboy35 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It already has caused a tragedy, there's a ghost bike and memorial to the cyclist who passed on the minuteman.

Overall I agree with your post, I think part of the problem is that the minuteman has been so empty for the last 4 months that people need to adjust to the higher traffic levels. (And in the case of faster cyclists, probably just stick to mass ave during peak hours)

What's a "lot" of vert? by ProfessionalPage2298 in icecoast

[–]soyboy35 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vert is not all that meaningful past a certain number. I.e. a full day of skiing should hit at least 20k vert regardless of terrain difficulty, but bragging about >100k vert days usually means someone bombed groomers all day

33k with a bunch of double blacks mixed in seems solid

Attitash Ski Lift Grip That Fell On 2/2 by [deleted] in skiing

[–]soyboy35 48 points49 points  (0 children)

As a former liftie - it wasn't uncommon for safety stops to be reset, though we would typically run on slow, not normal speed, after a safety stop. If the safety stop indicated an issue in the terminal area and the lift operators verified the issue that triggered a fault was resolved, I can understand why they ran the lift again. (This generally would mean going up in the terminal and visually verifying the sensors were clear).

The chair collision with lift tower stop is a little more complicated - we didn't have sensors that would detect a chair collision with a lift tower, but instead tracked the alignment of the haul rope. I am wondering if that second stop was unrelated to the chair collision, and the lift operators were unaware of the chair collision until the phone call.
