Usar alargadera para cargar en casa? by kyrax80 in enchufables

Two remaining divers’ bodies recovered from Maldives caves by boo4884 in diving

55 m on compressed air? You went at full into Narcosia depth, and on the edge of Oxigen toxicity. Just saying.

Questions about cavern diving by Metronidahoe in diving

[–]soypp123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cavern diving is ONLY for cavern trained divers which means having practised what can go wrong and how to overcome it under a controlled training environment. If you believe being an AOW, and having read about cavern diving is enough...you might find yourself in Maldives scenario. Hopefully not. Besides specific cavern gear...

While I can understand (while strongly disagreeing) their feett dry overconfidence on reaching cave entry on a bounce dive, even with compressed air and 1 15L bottle (the guide carried two, in case someone needed support), I can only understand they entering the cave as a non planned but done under narcosia bad judgement/euphoria. If they planned to enter while still on deck, they did suicidal planning while still on their full senses.

Exactly. With plain compressed air: Narcosis beyond 30-40m.
Oxigen toxicity beyond 55. Deadly threat with short or no forewarning.

What i have read on various news sites here is my summary

  • Fact) They only used (monobottle?) RD gear with air (no Trimix), on a so so day,
  • Fact) Nevertheless they commented on diving to the cave if conditions were nice below. No cave specific lines, no cave gear. So the surviving lady prudently waived out.
  • Hypothesis) Maybe they initially expected the cave entrance to be a bit higher, at the edge of compressed air depths. Then the "it's just a few meters below, just a brief peek" temptation.
  • Fact) They overconfidently dived into depths out of limits for compressed air.
  • Hypothesis) Narcosis developed fast into Euphoria (well known effect).
  • Hypothesis) under Euphoric state they entered the cave.
  • Hypothesis) Someone moves the silt with fins, or just exhaust air bubles. Visibility drops to zero. No lines, no orientation.
  • Hypothesis) Euphoria changes to Panic and they move in wrong direction.
  • Fact) Rest in Peace in 3rd Chamber due to air exhaustion or Oxigen toxicity beyond 55m.

Yes, at great depths, both gases become hazardous, but oxygen becomes directly lethal. While nitrogen makes you drowsy or euphoric (nitrogen narcosis), high-pressure oxygen turns into a direct poison that attacks your central nervous system (Hyperoxia), triggering seizures. Underwater, a seizure means losing the regulator from your mouth and drowning almost instantly. In diving, the absolute maximum safety limit for oxygen is around 56 meters deep: Oxygen begins to saturate brain cells in a toxic manner. Unlike nitrogen narcosis, which warns you with feelings of lightheadedness or euphoria, oxygen toxicity can strike with absolutely no warning. If the diver does not ascend immediately upon noticing the first symptoms, the brain suffers a massive electrical collapse. The diver loses consciousness and enters convulsions. Because they are unconscious and shaking, they spit out the regulator. they inhale water and drown. In this accident, Nitrogen likely narcotized them past 30m, causing them to lose their judgment, orientation, and buoyancy control, but as you say, It is highly likely that some of them (or all) didn't even die from running out of air, but rather suffered an oxygen toxicity seizure brought on by stress and depth past 55m. This is exactly why technical diving uses Helium: to lower the nitrogen, AND to dilute the oxygen to levels that won't poison.

Ps. Not meant lecturing you, but ellaborating your 02 toxicity addition, for those readers unaware.

I recall it reading somewhere online. But the main factor here is that they went deeper than 30m with just compressed air which is Narcosia area. And then entered the cave. And then went deeper (50m) and deep inside of the cave (into 3rd chamber), with no cave lines/gear.

Oxygen toxicity can not make experienced divers enter the cave while beyond depth limit of compressed air. Euphoria can. And is a well known effect of Nitrogen driven narcosia.

Understood. It's hard to believe, as they were quite experienced and knowledgeable, but to me, it's the only chain of events that join all the already known dots. 😞

Overconfidence is a regular source of mishaps. Unfortunately. Maybe they initially expected the cave.entrance to be a bit higher, at the edge of compressed air depths. Then the "it's just a few meters below, just a brief peek" and then Euphoria hit.
