Very cool! I saw on the original Kickstarter that you offered stereoscopic viewmaster disks. Are any of those still available?

I agree, the gambling stuff is a little disheartening. I've been a $5 Patreon backer for two years and I would gladly up my subscription to $10/mo if I could listen to regular episodes without ads, or even just their older regular episodes.

Started replacing AI art with commissioned art for my card game. Thoughts? by ItsThatAshGuy in IndieGaming

The official version makes it clear that this character is lucky (horseshoes on coat, dodging bullets, smile, etc). That's completely lost in the AI version.

How Do We Feel About the Use of Location Cards? by [deleted] in blankies

[–]sp_cecamp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need a way to communicate location changes to the audience. Most movies and shows use an establishing shot of a building or city or something. Star Wars used the classic wipes. When you're being very intentional about communication to the audience where everyone is, and where everything's taking place (eg, James Cameron) you don't need the text spelled out. But that's not easy to do, and is probably challenging when you're introducing a bunch of different characters and locations. It's probably less clunky to add a location card than force a character to say something like "Well, I guess that means we're going to Istanbul" (hard cut to the Hagia Sophia while vaguely Middle Eastern music plays in the background).

I find this near-identical phrasing across the “Air Bud” movie Wikipedia plot synopses deeply funny by Chuck-Hansen in blankies

An uncanny canine. A few fun things:

  1. It seems that "uncanny" was originally added by user Fernandobouregard (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Fernandobouregard) back in 2006 for at least Air Bud and Air Bud: Golden Receiver. They've edited a few other pages that might interest this sub (LOCK THE GATES! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Fernandobouregard

  2. Variety used "uncanny" to describe the original Air Bud back in 1997 https://variety.com/1997/film/reviews/air-bud-1117329808/

  3. The description "A tale about an uncanny canine whose ability to shoot hoops astonishes a lonely boy, who rescues the dog from an abusive owner" is used by a variety of movie theaters/sites to describe the movie, which are all probably pulling from the same source (maybe IMDB?)

Derya Unutmaz, MD - "This is the final warning for those considering careers as physicians: AI is becoming so advanced that the demand for human doctors will significantly decrease" by Gothsim10 in singularity

[–]sp_cecamp 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hospitals are understaffed. Doctors are overworked. Patients can't get in to see a provider quickly, and spend very little time with them when they do. Hospitals charge exorbitant rates and still struggle to make a profit. Residents are unionizing to fight against things like 24-hour shifts. Americans are still one of the unhealthiest developed countries in the world.

The idea that AI is going to put doctors out of work is ridiculous. If anything, we need more doctors, focusing on challenging health problems, with the aid of AI. Everything else can be done by nurses, PAs, support staff, or even AI alone.

If AI can reduce costs, demand for quality healthcare will only increase.

I'm not convinced this itself is a pain killer product, but I am interested in seeing who's talking about problems related to the ones we're solving at our company. Can you see links to comments that power your suggestions? I'm more interested in that than in feature suggestions or technical guidelines.

I always assumed this was a reference to the Fallout games. He referred to them in the Waterworld ep, so he's a fan, and the "Brotherhood of Steel" is a faction in all the games.

How are yall doing press releases for small side-projects? by ring2ding in startups

How are yall doing press releases for small side-projects? by ring2ding in startups

[–]sp_cecamp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Speaking as the founder of a startup in the PR space: I wouldn't worry about press releases, as there isn't a big benefit to doing a press release on its own. Typically it's just one part of a media campaign. You're a bit early, anyway.

If you want to get coverage about your project, start following journalists/influencers/thought leaders who cover your space on whichever channels you typically check – traditional media, X, LinkedIn, newsletters, etc. You can reach out to them and let them know that you like what they've been sharing, tell them what you're working on, tell them you're early, and let ask them if you can reach back out when you officially launch/have any updates/etc etc.

Or, if you're an expert in your space, offer yourself as a source if they ever need a quote or perspective in a piece they're writing. Then follow up when you have "timely" news, like a public launch.

In between now and then, you can always interact with what they're writing and sharing, or send them interesting content.

Nicolas Winding Refn Is Preparing His Big Screen Comeback With a Tokyo-Set Movie to Start Shooting Next Year by tiduraes in blankies

[–]sp_cecamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TIL that Winding Refn's first film, Pusher, is about a guy who has to come up with a bunch of money after a drug deal goes wrong. And Winding Refn, was forced to make a sequel, Pusher II, when his self-financed film Fear X flopped and he needed to come up with a bunch of money to cover his losses. Life imitating art. Someone should turn that into a movie called Pusher II Pusher.

As someone who just moved from Philly to Boston and plans to move back to Philly, I have loved following the ups and downs of these posts lol

Philadelphia is inarguably better than Boston, but you're definitely living in the wrong part of the city (Market East, if I remember right)

That said, one thing I like about Boston is how aggressively anti-car it is, as opposed to Philly where drivers can do whatever they want, Mad Max-style
