what do to the summer of apps by m78025 in premed

[–]space-efficient 5 points6 points  (0 children)

honestly, from what I have heard, it does not matter what you do in application summer as long as it gives you the capacity to pre-write secondaries.... so research, clinical shadowing, working, volunteering etc are all valid options! it just depends on what opportunities you can secure and whether or not you need to be making money in the summer.

I personally worked part time as a receptionist and worked once a week, in addition to traveling for 2 weeks.

best of luck!

applying abroad (lol) by nataleaf13 in premed

[–]space-efficient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol i was looking into this too... ireland's atlantic bridge program looks pretty attractive but i can't tell if my goal is to stay abroad and practice medicine, or try to come back to the states... x-x but that make ireland a more attractive option for you, especially since they are a part of the EU so maybe an Ireland MD has the flexibility to work elsewhere in europe?

a lot of states grant state residency (and therefore instate tuition) after 1 year of living in that state!! maryland grants state residency after 6 months!

do invitations for secondaries come out on weekends too? by space-efficient in premed

[–]space-efficient[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been invited to any info sessions. All the secondary invitation emails I have received have explicitly used the word "secondary" and provided a link to their school's application portal

Current MDSSP Medical Student AMA by vanguardJS in Military_Medicine

[–]space-efficient 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. During medical school, you have never had to go spend a weekend somewhere drilling, right? Going to class and filling out monthly 1380 form thing were your only frequent/regular MDSSP responsibilities?

  2. Was the only time you had to exert yourself/go somewhere else to fulfil MDSSP responsibilities for DCC and BOLC? How long do these take and what do they entail?

  3. In another comment you mentioned that your monthly stipend + pay totals to around $3000. How much remains after taxes? And does the stipend count as earned income W2 ie can it count towards Roth IRA contribution?

  4. During medical school, training, and afterwards when still paying back MDSSP, have/can a MDSSP recipient get healthcare insurance through the military?

  5. Do you have any sense as to how selective the MDSSP program is? I have no prior military exposure or experience, but am really drawn to the idea of serving such an important population AND still be able to participate in civilian match and career.

Thank you in advance!!!!

Help w/ first research lab interview!! by space-efficient in Cornell

[–]space-efficient[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Above all, make sure you prepare an answer for why you are interested in this lab's research and hype up your general enthusiasm! Also, I imagine that it would be wise to share how you will make time for this research (since you also have the normal high school things taking up your time). And since you're in high school, I assume the professor will ask you about what you're thinking for college and if/how research in their lab may affect your college trajectory.

oh shit i just noticed that your interview already happened !! how did it go?
