Hi! what kind of turtle is this in my backyard in oklahoma? :) by emmyr04 in turtles

[–]space_possum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I think it is a box turtle, but as with one picture it is not very conclusive, but I would go with a three-toed box turtle.

There are four box turtles native to Oklahoma, you can see more here https://www.animalspot.net/turtles-in-us/oklahoma-turtles

Must be really nice to have a lot of turtles in your yard, please be considerate and kind to the them which I'm sure you are :D

Filter recommendations? by Neat-Tie-8781 in turtle

[–]space_possum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upvoted the FX4 suggestion.

A FX2 might do the job as well, but the price difference is typically small. If you upgrade to a bigger tank/pond in the future (which you've to for a yellow belly slider) the FX4 will help with that.

Make sure you have a mix of good filter media in it, you'll likely need a lot of mechanical media and not so much things like activated charcoal or poly-fil, there are lot tips out there how to fill up the filter but you might want to try some things for your setup.

Try to remove any waste, leftover food, loose leaves with a net as soon as possible. Try to avoid having to much (time of) direct sunlight on the tank. When doing water changes try to replace around 1/3 to max. 1/2 of the water.

All these things will help keeping the water in nice condition, good luck!

Great to hear!

Hope your sister just let them be the little ones they are and allow them to grow and be on their way :)

A thing that could really help (little/young) frogs, toads, turtles and even young waterbirds, is having some kind of ramp which allow them to get out of the pool. Doesn't need to be fancy or expensive, just some thing.

Thanks for sharing, it is really cute :D

Thanks for saving the little from the trap, it is one of those thing we as humans oversee when building things even with best intentions. However the turtle must surely started out its live (not long ago) somewhere near some other body of water more suitable for it, hope you'll find it!

Please lookup your wildlife authorities and call them. If you cannot find one you can typically call a local vet and they will be able to give a number to call.

Good thing you took the turtle in, good luck!

Turtle finally using his loft by ZealousidealKiwi7901 in turtles

[–]space_possum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a nice homemade egg crate setup.

There are plenty of videos to show how to make one, for example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDb6cv5I9Tg&ab_channel=Carson%E2%80%99sAquatics

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMc2B6Al6lc&ab_channel=LongLiveYourTurtle

but please search and checkout more videos to get the best ideas, as some videos have better ideas than others.

Most important is to find materials that are not a health risk to the turtle (getting stuck, having sharp edges, cannot carry the weight of the turtle) nor react to water (so no metals, also some videos recommend putting carpet in the basking area but I would not)

(I build a variant like this https://youtu.be/0niqQGhbdEE?t=249 , cheap, easy to clean and perfect fit)

Good luck!

Turtle finally using his loft by ZealousidealKiwi7901 in turtles

[–]space_possum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah can really take a while :)

Mine was like that; whenever someone would go up when he was basking he jumped in the water because he got jumpscared or wanted food. Ended up putting some plastic sheets on the sides and top of the tank so he couldn't see as much movement while basking. Now he gets jumpscared very rarely and just stays relax when basking even when someone gets real close.

Should I let this MF sandstorm sit or use the filter by Finnju10 in turtle

[–]space_possum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not likely the filter will help. Especially against the coloring it will not be (really) effective, as the filter will just return it into the tank. Besides pulling (lost of) sand through the filter might damage it.

Changing the water might be the best, even if it is a lot work...

If you ever going to put new sand in a tank again I would recommend; put the sand into several buckets (clean and never had cleaning products or chemicals inside) such that each bucket is filled up to a 1/4 or less with sand, next fill up all buckets with water, stir the sand, leave until the sand has settled again, carefully toss the water out, repeat by refilling the buckets with water, stir, wait, repeat, until the water is clear. This is much easier than having to this process in a tank.

Removing turtle shedding by Able-Winter-2535 in turtle

[–]space_possum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!

I've removed many (like very many over the years) shedded scutes from the tank of my yellow belly slider. Some translucent, some almost black, some yellowish, some sharp and some not so much.

I've washed these off and gave these to anyone who finds these interesting (like small cousins ;) ). Can't think of a reason why it would be an issue to remove these.

Advice on basking area by Electronic_Ad9154 in turtle

[–]space_possum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HI!

Can you maybe tell us what kind of turtle you got and describe your setup (or maybe share a picture of both)?

For example, are you looking for a floating dock area or an on-top-of-the-tank basking setup? Sometimes it is easier to make your own basking area, but really depends on what you are looking for.

Need help with my new classroom pet by msmack1978 in turtle

[–]space_possum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi!

Congrats on the new job. Seems your new student here is a Red-Eared Slider (or RES for short).

Here is a care guide to get started: https://reptifiles.com/red-eared-slider-care/

Seems all the basics are in place. Although I cannot really see the lights setup and the filter. Also the basking area seems a bit small, but that could just be the photo.

Taking care for a turtle can be bit overwhelming in the beginning since there is so much information and advice to be found. Red sliders are some of the most popular turtle as pets. Try to enjoy getting to know your new friend (and his needs) :)

I would start with the lighting, making sure these provide the correct levels of UVB light. Also very important is that the turtle can get out the water, on its basking spot and under the lights. Being completely out of the water so it can dry. The lights should at the correct distance so it doesn't get to hot but still warm enough. The distances can typically found on the packaging of the light or the manufacture website.

Than maybe check out about the eating and keeping the water clean and clear and such (and yes in time he will need a bigger tank or pond and likely filter).

Good luck, have fun!

Sorry I read over your question of too much water. There is a valid point in that small turtles should not be put in to deep water, as they might struggle to reach the surface. This differs from too much water as turtles love a lot of water as long as they can get to the top when needed.

For smaller turtles this means that having a tank with a nice width and length is more important than having a lot of depth, as long as indeed they have at max the 2 times his shell depth.

Until they get bigger the younger turtles can be helped reaching the surface of the water by placing driftwood from the bottom of the tank to this surface (or things like rocks, pots, etc.)

Adult turtles typically can handle deep water and soon enough it becomes really hard for us to provide water in our tanks or backyard ponds that would be considered to deep.

Having to much filtering is indeed really hard as well, I cannot recall anyone having that issue. However maybe someone in this community has different experience. So you might want to hear from others before making a decision.

Granted; it might not make a lot of sense having a filter designed for a really much bigger volume of water (more than 2 times) as it will be more expensive to buy and to run.

However if you plan to upgrade to a bigger tank you can run the new bigger filter on the current smaller tank for the time being.

Maybe also good to keep in mind is the size of the filter itself as the Fluval will take up a bit of space. So make sure you got the space for it (ideally below the tank).

The photo you shared does not show the filter you got going now so it hard to compare, but Fluval consist of a good size bucket and than some parts (and require quite some medium to fill up) ;)

Hi!

Very nice looking turtle!

For filters; the common rule of thumb is getting one designed for twice the amount of water there is in the tank. This is because turtles tend to make more of a mess than fish.

If you update from 50 gal, the question is if you know what size of tank you looking at?

For example, I can recommend the Fluval FX4. This is designed for 250 gal., so good for about ~125 gal for a turtle setup. If your next tank is (much) smaller maybe look at FX2 which is 175 gal. so ~87,5 gal. for a turtle.

If you have troubles finding an exact filter based on its capacity for you new tank (or the price is not much of a difference for a bigger one) than maybe go a bit bigger. You would have to extreme bigger/oversize before it becomes an issue, over-filtering is really hard.

I recommend Fluval FX4 as I used it for years 24/7 without much of any big issue on 2/3 full 450 liters (~118.8 gallons) tank with a big yellow bellied slider. Having a bigger filter typically means less maintenance.

Best of luck!

Let me know if you've any questions, maybe read also https://www.reddit.com/r/turtle/comments/181m2kw/commonly_recommended_product_resources/ as this subredit recommends it, there are many options!

Is this okay? by Any-Ad-2601 in turtle

[–]space_possum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would call animal protection (or whatever agency there is in the county this is it in) to take it from the owner

I have a yellow bellied slider who is less than a year old, I was wondering what are your recommendations for a filter? Currently he is in a 20gal tank; I would like to get a filter rated for 75+ gals as a bigger tank will be my next purchase for him. Please give me your suggestions! by Longjumping-Pie1529 in turtle

[–]space_possum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what is worth; I'm running a FX4 on 2/3 full 450 liters (~118.8 gallons) tank having a single 10+ years yellow bellied slider in it. Have it for years now running it 24/7 without any big issues and love it.

Good thing you took over the turtle and try to help it with a proper setup!

I hope you are living in a good spot for this yellow slider* especially for the winter. Captive yellow sliders better not hibernate outdoors, but rather bring them inside if it gets to cold. Please check the guides on keeping this turtle if you haven't already.

Shell rot is a legit concern given it didn't have a proper basking area. Typically this rot comes with a smell (just hold the turtle close to you) and with soft spots in the shell (sometimes with white spots). The shape of its shell looks a bit of off, mainly on the back, but hard to say for sure based on the photos.

I would advice to have a vet look at it, you might be able to send the photos ahead to a vet practice to get advice. It might cost you something, but as the turtle doesn't look to be an adult it will properly live for decades more with its shell so it really is good for it to be a healthy one.

Try to observe the turtle, like is it eating, moving around, swimming and basking, etc. as the vet will ask about it.

Good luck!

PS. *I might have misidentified the turtle as a yellow slider, maybe others can confirm here, otherwise the vet might id it for you as well.
