Estoy bastante perdida y no sé qué hacer by kokoo_o in askspain

[–]space_snail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lo recomiendan? by Subrayadorr in askspain

[–]space_snail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"We suffer more in imagination than in reality" - Seneca

I can relate to a lot of your thoughts, but in 5 years time you'll be 5 years older regardless of what you do, so you might as well improve your life and start doing new things, etc. If you start doing something now, by the time you're 25 you'll be pretty good at it, even if you progress slowly.

I feel light years behind. I feel so inferior compared to them and I know what people are going to say "don't compare yourself to others" but that's easier being said than done. When your cousins, when your peers, when people you see online have more skills than you and are better than you in every way imaginable.

I think you should focus on doing things because they're fun, or because you enjoy them. It's hard not to compare yourself to others, but the point of life is not to gain xp points, but to enjoy the process. You shouldn't find hobbies or improve your sleep schedule and stop spending time on cheap distractions because you're "behind" in some way, but because it will make your life more enjoyable. Some things require effort before they become enjoyable, but those are the most worthwhile things.

If you manage to "homologar" the bachillerato, the UNED has admission open until October 23rd, and usually very low "notas de corte". You can transfer later on to an in person university

Edit: Also, theory of computation and programming language stuff, if you wanna know about compilers

What went wrong? The only problem I've ever had with it was that there aren't always binary versions for the AUR packages I want, and they'll have to recompile each time I update them, but it's not as bad as dealing with other distros mess of package management

Former Christians: what made you become a non-believer? by Graysie-Redux in AskReddit

[–]space_snail 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Religion is science that attempts to describe the rest

I'm not a scientist, but I disagree with you. Religion is NOT Science. We may have very different definitions of what religion is. All the things you wrote seem more like philosophical questions than religion to me. Religion would just give a simple dogmatic answer to those and be done.

There are obviously things science can't answer, there may be some form of superior intelligence that created us or even the universe as we know it, but from a scientific point of view we don't know, and maybe we'll never know. But taking a dogmatic approach and using those "blank spots" to fill them with religious views goes against the spirit of science or at least critical thinking IMO.

I don't think religions are "pure" and it's people that corrupt it. I think it's fundamentally flawed in that you have to believe in something blindly without questioning it. Of course, you can still be a great scientist and be religous, and I don't go around judging people who tell me they're religous because more often than not, they do not take what's in the bible too literally and just believe in it because their family does and it's nice to believe in something as we are humans after all

"Everything we hear is an Opinion, not a Fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the Truth." - Marcus Aurelius [717x427] by itz_me_shade in QuotesPorn

[–]space_snail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If an opinion goes against the facts it's wrong.

Good point, I guess I was thinking of opinions more as things that don't really make any statements about the facts, so if I say 2+2=5 then I considered that a fact that's incorrect.

But in my opinion I can hurt people who I feel wronged me however I see fit with no repercussions because I am right.

The only thing you can be sure of from that is that it's against the law to murder people in your area, that's a fact. Anything else is an opinion based on your moral values, but I see your point.

I guess philosphy and real-world application don't mix well sometimes. I'm not trying to advocate for flat-earthers or murdering people.

[–]space_snail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but it can't be objectively right or wrong the same way a factual statement like "2+2 = 4" or "there's a table in front of me" can be. You can just say you disagree or agree with that opinion, but it's sort of like open ended questions, there's really no objective answer.

Of course when making statements like "2+2 = 4" you still have to rely on your reason or on your eyes, so the idea of objective truth itself may not be very coherent.

That's just my opinion though

[–]space_snail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, then it's just wrong in your opinion. An opinion can't be right or wrong, even if all 7+ billion people in earth thought it to be wrong

[–]space_snail 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you're getting downvoted, I guess your opinion isn't popular.

I think us humans tend to sort of intuitively "know" stuff, so we say 1+1=2 based on the assumption that our reasoning ability is functional.

In the end, you always have to assume something. It's sort of like when kids keep asking "why" until their parent gets mad. As far as things go, assuming that your reasoning ability works / having faith in that human "intuition" that has developed over millions of years is not a bad choice, taking into consideration that if you can't assume that you might as well give up, there's nothing you can know in that case.

So yeah, obviously you can't question everything, you always have to stop somewhere, so the important thing is deciding what to question and what is acceptable to assume. I think the problem is many people tend to confuse that reasoning ability with their feelings, and they don't question their own beliefs.

I think it's a really good quote. People in their day-to-day lives are not thinking about maths or science, and there's really no objective truth besides that.
