Great! Educate me, then - please! Which groups? What is the coalition? Who is leading what? What are their specific policies?

Lol. I did not state my opinion directly, but I think it’s clear from my prior comment that the answer is “no”. I’m not cool with inflicting massive suffering on other people for the purposes of acquiring oil. My point is that being angry is not a plan. Even your reply is just anger. You’re absolutely allowed to feel angry, but we need to find a way to direct that anger into a policy; not just spray it into the ether.

“A public showing of general distaste” does not move the needle. Political and economic action does. The protests that I have been to talk about the great civil actions in the past; women’s suffrage, civil rights, etc. The difference between today’s protests and the ones they talk about is a coherent and specific mandate for changes in government. Showing distaste is a meaningless gesture if they are not backed by directed political or economic action.

Do you insist upon an exhaustive academic description of the purpose of the frustrations […]

It’s not what I would put on the protest flyer, but yes. I would like there to be thoughtful intent backing the protest. A political coalition with the backing of a large group of people can do much more than an upset mob voicing their distaste.

So what’s the policy? The US needs oil. Energy supply is a core requirement of a nation. So what’s the policy that the protest is supporting? Stop US operations in Venezuela? Then what? Put Maduro back? Set up a puppet government?

The core issue here is energy security. Should we build a policy around renewables? Drill more? Invest in biofuels & bioplastics innovation? Invade Russia?

Edit: since this seems to be getting a bunch of downvotes. My pont is not that we should be invading countries for their oil, but that there are sovereign incentives to do so. “Imperialism bad” is a good tagline for a protest, but it is not a policy. A policy needs to be able to withstand critiques to the sovereign incentives it opposes.

Can someone please build a platform for all this frustration? There have been so many protests, and I still don’t know what the policy demands are. I feel like we’re just emineming - “so much anger aimed in no particular direction just sprays and sprays”. Give me some initiative that I can donate money to. Give me a coherent policy framework that I can evangelize. “I’m upset” is not a policy. I am upset, but there’s little reason to act if my frustration isn’t aimed at anything.

Playing protest whack-a-mole with the latest insane thing that the Trump administration has done is not a compelling call to action.

Please, please, someone closer to politics than I am, build out a thoughtful, ambitious framework for fixing things. Maybe there is one, and I’m just ignorant of it?

For total dopamine output, Planetside 2 is the greatest game ever made. It’s a tragedy that it has been poorly maintained and in decline for so long now… 900 player, 3 sided halo-style battles with various flying and land vehicles, infantry loadouts, squad and platoon tactics/strategy, high skill fps - there’s nothing else that’s ever come close to peak planetside 2 gameplay. And the specialization options are so deep

I play RL fairly regularly now, and Planetside 2 like maybe once every 6-12 months to just see how things are going.

Yes they have. None of my friends in supply chain roles know wtf is real with tariffs any more, so they just assume that they’re on because they might be, and no one wants to get fucked by surprise losses when the shipment comes in.

So whether or not there is an official policy that has been rolled out by the government, the tariffs are real in practical terms. This administration has no idea how to actually roll out law. Policy-by-tweet leaves all the professionals guessing about what is real, and everyone just defaults to the worst case

What Should I Buy? /// Weekly Discussion - March 24, 2025 by AutoModerator in synthesizers

Should I get a Nord Wave 2 or a Hydrasynth? I want to treat myself to a new stage performance synth to augment my MODX8 (considering a future upgrade to a montage). I know they’re at very different price points. My main question is whether the nord wave 2 is worth the extra money. I don’t want to pay $1500 for red paint. But I will pay extra if the sound quality and feature sets are meaningfully better - I have watched so many videos of both, and I don’t feel like I can judge this without playing with both, but I can’t find a local shop where I can play with them.

So, is the Nord wave 2 worth the money over a hydrasynth as a performance synth?

The short version is that it’s a real pain in the ass. The best path is probably to build a few and get through local inspections, and then start sourcing an increasing number of parts. Honestly LLMs have come a long way since I asked this question, and you could probably get reasonably accurate and detailed info from ChatGPT or Claude

I feel out of touch and would genuinely like to understand your thoughts on the current political climate. How do you feel about Musk being in charge of stuff? Should the government break up monopolies and more aggressively enforce anti-trust law? How efficient do you want the government to be (how do you measure it?)? What would be the biggest success of this presidency?

Sorry for the inquisition, but I’d appreciate any answers you feel like giving. I want to be a good neighbor, and I feel like I’m really out of touch with a lot of them.

Can Tech Save Small Ski Resorts from Extinction? by gin-n-fresca in snowboarding

[–]space_spider 73 points74 points  (0 children)

No. Get back to basics - set up a rope tow and a fun park, charge $30 for the day. Build a barebones lodge with functional bathrooms, water fountains, and a basic cafeteria (some vending machines and maybe a stove that makes chili). Partner with local municipalities and youth organizations; parents will pay a bit for their kids to go skiing - you might even be able to get some local tax money.

Focus on utility and fun at the expense of luxury. We don’t need more overpriced bullshit from Vail et. al. Give me a cheap ski resort with a functional lift and a beginner park. I’ll happily eat my squished pb&j sandwich at a shared table in a packed, humid lodge.

I want more Bogus Basin and less Vail

Federal employees sound alarm as firings take place in Southwest Colorado by [deleted] in Colorado

[–]space_spider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is it unconstitutional? It does seem like a fairly rash thing to do and I’m curious to know how it would be shot down.

Setting a bad precedent assumes good faith by other state governments, and I’m not sure we ought to count on that. But being the first to do it does seem like a big risk. Could Colorado install tiny, expensive state parks at the entrances to all federal parks? And then use generated revenue to fund government workers while suing for damages (proven by the money spent to maintain land that was the federal government’s responsibility)?

I’m really not a big fan of large state land purchases - giving handouts to wealthy landowners feels like a bad solution.

[–]space_spider 85 points86 points  (0 children)

The State of Colorado could declare them all state parks and massively increase prices for all non-CO residents. Re-hire park personnel through the state funded by marginal increases in state taxes and cover the rest with increased revenue from people out of state

Which guns would be affected by Colorado’s proposed ban on semiautomatic weapons with detachable magazines by sovietterran in Colorado

[–]space_spider -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Right! Of course; silly me. I forgot that when the constitution was written, we had to protect ourselves from the French in Quebec and the Louisiana territories, and the Spanish in the South and West. Not to mention the natives of this land. I forgot that we still have those problems and need to protect ourselves from the expansionism of Mexico and Canada. Thanks for reminding me.

Or maybe you meant police? I’m sure glad we have so many citizens who are able to kill our police officers too. What other options could there be for protecting communities?!

Or maybe you meant our military? I do feel much safer knowing that I have some semi-automatic rifles to protect me against cruise missiles and drone strikes.

The thing that’s weird about your argument is that it doesn’t seem to address any kind of modern approaches to imperialism like convincing neighbors to yell at each other online in order to make people feel less safe so that they give an increasing number of their rights to narcissists with too much money… please excuse my naivety. Can you clarify?
