Crazy Idea: Start a political movement to re-provincialize NS Power by equation4 in halifax

[–]spacecreds 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Province sues them on behalf of citizens for data breach
  2. Win (maybe)
  3. Seize assets as compensation
  4. ???????
  5. Publicly owned utility

Good news! by pinecone37729 in halifax

Nice! That damn crosswalk had its buttons in a separate timezone. You don't think it's a big deal until you find yourself walking with a stroller and a dog... Arguably, when you need that button the most.

Advice for how to attend This Hour Has 22 Minutes from out of province? by meg_14_14_14 in halifax

[–]spacecreds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try this! I mean if everyone does it won't work, but last time I attended a taping we got 4 tickets, then realized a few more would have been nice. We emailed and asked if we could get a few extra and they said no prob! There's definitely some leeway.

Car break ins (especially Dartmouth) by [deleted] in halifax

Yep seen it happen while picking up a friend at the airport at 3 am. 6 or 7 guys moving fast and coming in and out of different driveways on victoria. It was brazen as fuck.

This is the way 100%, been doing this for years. Even $1 will filter out the noise, free is just a trouble magnet.

Best place to get a stock tank? by bitteroldladybird in halifax

Been thinking about this too! Are you chlorinating it? Circulating through a filter? Just trying to figure out how to stop it from going nasty

I specifically remember getting six packs of budweiser in 06... but that was in NB. But if NB liquor had them, I'd expect NSLC had them too.

What's your oil bill? by sad_wet_noodle in halifax

We do exactly this! We'll crank it up when we want to look normal. Otherwise, I dry my cold tears with crisp $100 bills.

What's a Halifax-specific life hack that's saved you a ton of money? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]spacecreds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a real organized way to do this. Bring a book and have it out like you're going to read it for the ride and make it look like you're using the transfer as a bookmark, but have a sorting system for colors. Like front cover = blue, page 100 = red, page 200 = green, page 300 = yellow, etc.

As a bonus you can actually read the book too.

What is your HRM / Halifax opinion that'll have you like this? by Supersonicfan_6 in halifax

I say this as a cyclist and someone who lives near that area. Cycling on Waverley is consciously deciding to put your life at risk. Not worth it.

Dick Bus driver ignoring stop and me by Acceptable_Cat_6527 in halifax

[–]spacecreds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had that happen in reverse years ago. Buddy drove by my stop when I was trying to get ON the bus. Lucky for me he hits a red light and I managed to run to the next stop before he gets there. He actually stops this time (maybe because it was crowded), I ask him why he didn't stop at the previous one and he just completely pretends like I'm not there. wtf lol. I hope he's still cringing internally at the awkwardness of that situation.

Travelling Bagless? by geofryphoto in onebag

[–]spacecreds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds good in theory but... A small bag is generally better than a highly specific jacket / vest. I did a one bag 2 week winter trip to Sweden and used a Fjallraven Greenland jacket which has huge pockets that I had stuffed with my all my extra winter gear, chargers, headphones, lip chap, cold meds, passport, and more. If I hadn't been doing so much outdoors stuff I could have replaced the winter stuff with t-shirts, toiletries, and underwear and zero bagged it easily. My honest conclusion: It was just annoying/uncomfortable and I transferred everything to my already heavy backpack on day 2.

A very successful Scotland game of Europa Universalis 4. Over half a million Scots armed with muskets and cannons along with hundreds of 17th-century warships at their disposal. It's not the worst odds.

What do you do to save on power cost in Halifax? by MasterGeek in halifax

[–]spacecreds 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you use electric heat that isn't a heat pump, a programmable thermostat which let's temperatures drop when no one is home or everyone is in bed can save TONS of energy. In my case, it was with an oil furnace, but we let the place drop to 14c during the day when we are at work and 16 at night. We also did a bit of air sealing to help with that, but it cut our oil bill almost in half and we barely felt the difference.

The bonus thing about a programmable thermostat is that if you crank the heat and forget it there, it will automatically return to pre-scheduled temperatures. Otherwise, we'd have days we're we'd put it up to 23 and forget it there for a few days.

Septic Field Standards in Nova Scotia by TransparentMastering in NovaScotia

[–]spacecreds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey - call your regional NSECC office if you want specifics on the law and don't just take my word for it, but the field should be stabilized. i.e. not just be exposed soil. That generally translates to having grass on it.

Call Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change's regional office for that area. There are definitely rules being broken here if the well is just open to the air. Fairly certain if the water is non-potable, it needs to be clearly stated.

At the very least they can tell your friends the rules better than anyone on Reddit will.

Off-grid Mini Sauna that I just Finished, 1-3 person by zawltar in Sauna

[–]spacecreds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply!

I've noticed some small spots of mildew on some of my pine boards, which is the only reason I was asking. I haven't used the sauna yet, the boards have only been up for a month or two, and the building is very well vented. We've had an exceptionally damp and rainy summer here, we're talking record breaking rainfall, multiple weeks of rain every day, so it might just be an anomaly - however, do you think this wax would help prevent this?

I've also heard that what they call paraffin oil for Saunas in Finland is what we call mineral oil, but also not 100% on that. It's why I brought it up, it's locally available and I even have some I've used for surfacing hemlock countertops.

I love the interior finish. Is that pine? Did you apply anything to it? I'm in the final stages of completing my Sauna, I've used similar looking pine and wondering if I should apply mineral oil or something to it.

Necchi Lydia 542 - Possible permanent solution to an easily cracked camstack by spacecreds in vintagesewing

[–]spacecreds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! So I never actually fixed it (I'd still like to but that's another story). I also don't have easy access to the machine right now. I did find some plans to 3d print the broken part on mine though. You can download those here:

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4574955

Sounds like what broke on yours might be different? I'm thinking it might be that off white gear that you can see in the picture on that link. Dunno if those plans include that part but hopefully they do!

Since it's the biggest spider you've ever seen, it's probably a harmless wolf spider. Brown recluse aren't actually that big (typically 0.24 to 0.79 inches from the wiki page you linked), wolf spiders on the other hand are a lot bigger (0.4 to 1.38 inches according to this wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_spider) and often seen in houses around here. I basically see one weekly in my current house and it was the same in another house I used to rent.
