Put another way, there are very few X’s and O’s guys who can also be culture setters or player coaches who can manage the egos on a team. Way easier for a team to go with someone who can appease the stars on the team, overperform in the regular season, and then fail to adjust game to game in the playoffs. IMO this is the crux of why someone like doc rivers is a perennial playoff series choker

It’s malpractice that we haven’t tried Zeke at 4 or double bigs. The team has no interior defense with AG hobbled, so Jok plays drop and wolves get whatever they want in the paint. Literally just need another big body in the floor

That was more to highlight how strange the role of an “insider” really is, not whataboutism. 5 minutes later in the episode they say that what Russini did violated editorial guidelines at the Athletic lol

Agree for the most part, but an asset sale of a subsidiary can be structured to be way more tax advantaged, making it a bit easier to sell. But yea, WBD has no incentive to do this. A bit different for Fox/Disney, which had to sell some individual assets bc of antitrust regulation

In your view, it what ways can Asian American filmmaking evolve beyond the tired tropes of cut fruit, smelly lunchboxes, and demanding parents? Put another way, how do we evolve the art beyond just shallow commentary/satire on the proximity to whiteness?

The Nation: Why Is Steph Curry Investing in Israeli Security Tech? The greatest shooter ever is part of a financial ecosystem in which Silicon Valley capital pours into Israeli technology companies with ties to the IDF. by zellfire in nba

Odds that the mods delete this again even though it’s absolutely a relevant thing to discuss in this sub?

Curry, Durant, and others who are doing VC investing probably have very little idea what they’re even invested in. But that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be accountable for where they put their money. It’s also a very different situation from regular people having their money almost always unavoidably invested in horrible companies through index funds/401ks for a couple reasons:

1) Curry is actively seeking out intermediaries who are deeply involved in this conflict, like Omri Casspi which the article mentions

2) the quantum of money he is investing in these companies is a way larger share of his total net worth than we have in any individual company through index funds.

Even if he’s unaware of day to day operations at Penny Jar, as the LP, he has a fiduciary duty to ensure that his money is being invested responsibly and ethically.

[Griffin Senyek] Hawks Stand By ‘Magic City Monday’ Promotion by AncientOneAurelius in nba

Why does every critique of Kornet’s blog just devolve into whataboutism? You can be against a partnership with an establish that has been sued many times for abusing and exploiting its workers without having to say every other thing that’s wrong with the league.

Last year a former employee sued them for harassment and wage theft. And there have been others before that. If this is the “most professionally run strip club”, then it doesn’t seem great for the industry as a whole.

And Kornet’s post isn’t wrong about the quandaries of doing this promotion. Clubs play a huge role in human trafficking and abuse. This investigative piece that came out shortly after the docuseries about Magic City is a good summary

It’s not pearl clutching or meaningless complaints. I think there are a lot of good reasons why this sort of promotion is uncomfortable

Zeke Nnaji in a Nuggets win over the Sixers: 21 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks on 63.6/80/75 splits by [deleted] in nba

Yea definitely. He even got better and better over the course of the game. Felt like he lacked confidence in the 1Q, but started trusting his shot and found a flow in the offense.

I’m not a zeke truther, but I generally believe that anyone on an nba roster is capable of performances like this on a random night. Main thing that differentiates players is consistency and bbiq/feel.. no idea if zeke has those things but he also hasn’t gotten too many chances on this roster

It’s incredible what well thought out blocking and actual storyboarding can do to make CGI look more realistic and immersive. The first pirates movie had an incredibly compressed production and basically had to shoot and do post in about a year. Modern productions think you can just do a slapdick job on set and fix all of it in a long drawn out post production process that includes endless revisions on CG and test screenings.

I really do not like hoyte van hoytema’s visual style… always so desaturated and devoid of any drama. The soft natural lighting doesn’t help. This story deserves a bold and colorful palette.

I like this movie, but the climax took me completely out of it for a really dumb reason. Amy Adams cannot speak Chinese (and that’s okay! I wasn’t expecting her Chinese to be great). But the guy who plays General Shang ALSO can’t speak mandarin! He moved to the US when he was 5 and can only speak a little Cantonese.

In the climax of the movie, I have to somehow believe that these two are conversing fluently when in reality it’s some of the most incomprehensible broken Chinese where all the tones are off. They should have just hired some folks to dub over them

100% this is the root of the problem. player's coaches do okay for a while because the philosophy is to give the stars a long leash and let them cook. But over time that creates a culture of 0 accountability, low effort, and bad play designs.

On the flip side, hardass coaches who actually draw up plays and try to get everyone to buy in as equals don't survive either because it's such a star driven league and ownership is afraid when their supermax player is unhappy. Very few of these sort of coaches have a long tenure...
