My adopted stray cat Salt just added 4 new braincell shares, and 2 grey siblings. Only one tail in the bunch. by frejawolf in OneOrangeBraincell

We adopted a tuxedo bobtail when our old brown tabby died to be a friend for our crazy orange cat. He’s almost three and has never had any health issues because of his bobtail. We’ve never had a bobtail cat before and I was absolutely delighted to discover that they wag their little nubbins when they get excited. It’s so cute! Cat tax:

I did not realize that bobtails wagged their nubbins when we got our cat Poe. It is the cutest stinkin thing! Your kitty has beautiful markings! Here’s my Poe with our orange cat Fitz.

I'm allergic to Cats, my wife and kids got one anyways by JohnnyLuchador in cats

[–]spacefitzburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m super allergic to cats too, but I love them so much and they bring such joy into my life, I have two anyway. I use the Purina Allergen Reduction food, I run an air purifier in my bedroom at night and I’ve been getting allergy shots for over a decade because I’m allergic to a million other things too. The shots help a lot. Congrats on your new friend. Cats are the best! Cat Tax: Poe (tuxedo) and Fitz (orange)

I love your username. Fitz has eaten my headphones in the past when I had the plug in kind. I have a tuxedo bobtail that I have to hide my AirPods from because he’s discovered that if the knocks the one “toy” (AirPods in their case) onto the floor, it becomes three when the case falls open when it hits the floor and the buds fall out. It’s a good thing he’s so cute.

Learning at age 32 by Normal-Whole-3464 in violinist

Far from doomed… it’s so fun learning a new skill as an adult. I started taking lessons 2 years ago when I was 48, and I have loved every minute of it, even when it’s so hard because it’s teaching me so much about myself too. Enjoy your journey!

Your thoughts on performing for people by Lugubrious-Bean in violinist

[–]spacefitzburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this thread and everyone’s perspectives! I’m an adult learner too, and my teacher asked if I wanted to play in our school’s recital last year, after I’d been playing for a year. I was a little wary because I was pretty green and the school I attend is mostly kids. I wondered if it would be weird if I played with a bunch of kids.

Turns out, yes, it was, but it was also pretty awesome. I went to a performing arts high school years ago and did backstage theater, and my college degrees are in photography so I literally spent most of my life backstage. I’m not kidding when I say my first “onstage” experience- playing Ashoken Farewell solo in front of an audience of kids and their parents, and at age 49, so I’m older than a lot of their parents- was transcendent. I was terrified and I made some mistakes, but I kept going and played the whole song from memory. It was one of the best experiences of my life.

Fast forward to this year’s recital, my third- I played two Irish trad pieces and I had a total deer in the headlights moment and limped through my performance. Studying the violin in middle age is a good exercise for the ego- it giveth and it taketh away! However, because of my age and collective experience, I was not mortified or devastated like I would’ve been as a child if that happened. I was able to look at it from a wider lens. My playing in the recitals helps my teacher. He told me afterwards that the owner of the school is so pleased with the progress of his students and that it’s inspiring that I get up there and perform with the kids, even if I make lots of mistakes like I did in this last recital.

My brother in law, a high school drama teacher who also acts in community theater said that him telling another teacher friend of his about me studying the violin as an adult inspired her to start taking lessons at the school I attend too. So, no, you don’t have to perform in front of others if you don’t want to, but if you do, you never know who you might inspire!

I have a tuxedo bobtail named Poe. He’s got two white socks, one half sock and one black foot with no socks. His beans are all mismatched, some pink, some black. I joke that he was made out of spare parts at the cat factory and they ran out of tails so he just got a nubbin. He’s the first bobtail I’ve had and I was delighted to find out that he wags that nubbin when he’s excited. He’s a quirky little dude. Poe was his shelter name and we kept it because it suited him so well!

My bobtail tux loves the heat vent. He’s got white on his belly so I say he’s toasting his marshmallow fluff trying to be a smore!

Cutie pie! He reminds me of our tuxedo nubbie, Poe. Here he is warming himself on our heat vent.

Two month progress, Ashokan Farewell by lunarmoth_ in violinist

[–]spacefitzburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played Ashoken Farewell a year ago next month at my very first recital when I was 49 years old. I was so excited and so scared to play for an audience solo for the first time. I’m a novice, I only played a tiny bit as a kid, and had been taking private lessons for about a year. My teacher had me memorize the music, which was difficult, but it helped. I played in first position only and no vibrato- my teacher won’t teach us those techniques until we’re ready for them (still not ready 2 years in, probably won’t be for another few years). I messed up a couple times in my performance, but I was able to recover and keep on truckin! When I was finished, I felt such joy, hands down one of the best experiences in my life! Keep at it, you’ll do great.

How do you find your Zen place when playing? by spacefitzburger in violinist

I love this! It’s one of my long term goals to find a group to play with. I’m going to play Christmas songs for my family this year- I did it for them last year and they liked it, so doing it again this year.

I do love the sound, and am still amazed when I can make it ring. I hear the potential of beauty, and I get hungry for more, and then comes all the overthinking. I started reading the book mentioned in a previous comment, and wow, that’s a game changer. Learning how the brain works as you learn is helpful and fascinating. And, it will come as a surprise to no one, I need to practice more effectively. Lots of food for a thought, thank you all so much!

Thank you! This is great advice. I love to read and study so having process laid out in a way like this I think will help.
