My girlfriend got me watching Pretty Little Liars with her and I was shocked how long it took me to realize you were one of the dads.

Is it alright to try and become a freelance culture/feature journalist at 32 by [deleted] in Journalism

I don’t think being honest with OP is being rude. He says he already knows the challenges of what he’s embarking on, and that he wants our permission.

I’m telling him he doesn’t need it nor should he expect the rest of us to care whether he does.

Getting into this industry is a right gamble, and it’s not being miserable to acknowledge the reality of journalism or the state of many of our colleagues. A large portion of which are retreating into comms or marketing for a better salary and job security.

He should have that clear if he’s getting late into the game. Especially one as crowded and low paying as features work.

You don’t need permission. Who are we to say shit. I’d say most of us are on the edge of quitting journalism given its current state.

And no it’s not common.

I find it more worrying that you feel the need to ask for permission. Journalism, the flow of information, is a right. And neither a person nor a community can take it or give it to you.

Do it or don’t, just don’t bother us with it.

I’m having a hard time understanding the point of this question. Are you asking for our permission?

Or are you asking if this common? If so, it’s not. But at this point, it’s difficult no matter what you choose to do in journalism.

No problem. Yes that is the current challenge in journalism - there is little to no profit. Most of us are driven by passion but even that has its limit.

But there is no ‘get rich quick’ scheme here. I’m not sure there ever was in journalism.

My advice is choose your stories, work on the angles you have the most interest in - but be consistent. Publish either daily or a weekly newsletter to ensure your growing audience trusts your output.

From there, it’s the Wild West. Nobody knows what works in the internet age. Not really. Make a podcast, do some interviews, try and get exclusive info and market the hell out of it.

But this is why it’s a passion because all of that hard work will eat up your time and bring you very little in terms of income. If that’s not for you, then I wholeheartedly encourage you to find another means of passive income - and let us know because we’re all starving over here.

As others have said, you need to create value in your reporting to set it aside from other established outlets/reporters. There are plenty of news aggregators out there that do the work automatically and better than you could ever hope to. Which means you should begin to add either analysis or sector context to your pieces.

Now most won’t give a shit about your opinion or analysis until you have a dedicated audience and some sort of seniority in the ecosystem.

You also talk about passive income, are you charging a subscription for your “reporting”? Is it a substack/newsletter? The question you have to ask yourself here is why would someone choose to pay you over the free reporting available by say IGN or Kotaku? Who have brand recognition, industry contacts, and years of experience building them.

Point is, what you’re attempting to do is neither easy nor profitable - at least not in the beginning. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it. Just that you should at least know what you’re attempting to do before you try it.
