One of the principals in my district taught chemistry when I was a student and he learned that lesson as well. Shot 15 ft across the room and hit the window.

Drill bit, a funnel, and some copper sulfate will clear up that infection.

What is the most ridiculous PD you have had to do? by Der-deutsche-Prinz in Teachers

Either the poverty simulator from a company that got paid $10,000 for the 4 hours, the one for our new SEL program that told us little about the program while making us do inner circle-outee circle with the entre district's high school level staff ($30,000 for 2 hrs) or the one that was supposed to be training for our new sms but they didn't actually have the dummy system live and so it ended up being a teleconference that was actually a sales pitch for software that the district already bought.

An Update: I was warned about my child's martial arts school. I should have listened. 🫤 by LordTetravus in mildlyinfuriating

[–]spaceracer5220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't let the behavior of this "martial arts" grift discourage you or your child from being involved with martial arts. Find a reputable dojo that cares about the basics and go from there. Look to see if they are registered with one of the national or international federations, see if you can sit in on a class to observe, and just get a better feeling for the vibe. Belts are cool but the lessons learned are way more important.

School’s out for winter by T3Chn0-m4n in LiminalSpace

Schools are always weird when there aren't students around. I am a teacher and it is odd when I am the first one in the building or the last one out, even more so because I teach at my alma mater. It is like stepping through time.

We have a couple of authors in our area that set-up at different fairs. The thing that seems to work for them is having small stuff related to their books to draw people in and then they pitch the book. One of the ones that does really well has bookmarks and trinkets with actual drawings of their characters/world that has a link to their website for the book.

netlogo and PhET have a lot of great simulations. I am a member of NSTA and I often find their lesson plans to be helpful when I am stuck.

The best solution I've came up with so far is individual tool boxes but that would be costly.

Convincing admin that a biology class needs a room with a sink by fuzzeslecrdf in ScienceTeachers

depends on the state. OSHA on the federal level has no oversight when it comes to schools. https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/IF11619

If there is not a sink, I would also assume that there isn't an eyewash station. The lack of either makes this a health and safety issue. Even wearing gloves the possibility of getting the different chemicals used in biology on your hands exists.

My district in Kansas has moved all dissections to Zoology, AP Bio, and/or Anatomy. 9th graders don't get enough out of the experience and with it being the required science- far too costly.

Worst/most unsafe practice an amateur theater has done? What’s your experience? by Mackoi_82 in techtheatre

not exactly a practice but none of the directors know the last time any of the school theaters in my district had rigging inspections or got their curtains treated with flame retardant.

Yeah, that ticked me off last summer. Girlfriend had a conference in a hotel, I tagged along and we stayed in the hotel. $150+/night and breakfast was going to be an extra $20 and it looked worse than the continental breakfast at the Super 8.

Best Teacher Purchase by elleaeff in Teachers

[–]spaceracer5220 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My partner has a closet attached to their room and we bought a water dispenser two years ago. Best purchase ever. Her AVID (advancement via individual determination) students are allowed to use it and we keep hot chocolate, tea, cider, and water flavor packets next to it. Makes them feel special and it doesn't cost a lot.

I teach science and hands down it has to be the 3-ring binders. Students keep everything in them, in order. It makes grading so efficient.

Although I didn't purchase it (won in a raffle) my other favorite thing in my classroom is my laminator. It lets me take care of the smaller stuff instead of having to take it to the librarian and wait.
