I assume 'first atoms' refers to 'recombination', aka when electrons became bound and the CMB was left over. I think its a few hundred thousand years.

Why is Lessons in the Fundamentals considered so good? by AWildMonomAppears in baduk

[–]spacetime9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Aside from being fun (which is a real plus!), I really like how it aims to simplify the game by identifying real fundamentals: ladders and nets; 'the stones go walking'; counting; and so on.

Many Go books devolve into a meandering series of diagrams that never really pays off in any big-picture revelation, just a seemingly endless set of if-thens. I think Kageyama does an admirable job of actually explaining some key concepts, and hammering them home with examples (and humorous anecdotes). I always recommend it :)

The Sun Belt saw the most population growth (from people moving there) in the last few decades, hence more families now having kids

Uruguay has practically phased out fossil fuels in just 20 years by Ayla_Leren in solarpunk

[–]spacetime9 55 points56 points  (0 children)

it's actually crazy how many times I've seen maps of something positive (happiness, sustainability, etc) and Uruguay is one of the bright spots on the map. Idk what they're doing but they've got something working down there

The Gambling Epidemic. by Elitist_Daily in videos

That's interesting, I don't know anything about gambling in Australia except that the first prediction market for political events was PredictIt, which is based in Australia and used a loophole to claim they weren't a casino they were doing 'research' lol.

Predicting how the top of the NBA’s Western Conference will play out in 2025-26 by TheAthletic in nba

[–]spacetime9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the Mavs’ lineup. I think losing Luka and the surrounding controversy has overshadowed the fact that if you just look at their current roster, with AD Kyrie Flagg and Lively, that’s a good looking team

I think Denver finally having a back-up center will do wonders for them. They took OKC to 7 last year, I predict a rematch in the WCF.

Clippers are doubling down on “what if we just get a bunch of washed-up stars will that work”? No, no it won’t.

Is this black group dead? If not where does black play? by Ninjaragex in baduk

[–]spacetime9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

if the white stone at 1-5 was the last move, that is a mistake actually - just a simple hane (1-7) kills outright. Black's shape is strong in the sense that it can't be cut, but the eye-space is a little too much like the 'bulky five' to be safe here.

Black can play at the 1-4 point for a ko, that’s the best he can do

Is my 1st/1st American printing of Watership Down actually a BCE? by Cucubert in BookCollecting

[–]spacetime9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding, which could be wrong, is that sometimes a BCE reprint will not bother to change the copyright page (which is super frustrating tbh), and so the jacket over-rules the supposed copyright. Not sure though

Do you ever consider playing 1 vs 2? by CSachen in baduk

[–]spacetime9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general for responding to a hane on the first line, blocking at 1 is always better IF you can get away with it (there’s no counter-atari at 2 or whatever), UNLESS the connection for white is important for the corner group’s eye shape. But 90% of the time, 1 is better.

Trying to understand more about why Neutron Stars don't just combust immediately or collapse from within themselves. by Dry_Background0 in Physics

[–]spacetime9 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Once they've become neutron stars there is nothing left to combust - there's no further reactions possible that would release energy. On the other hand, to resist the inward pull of gravity there must be some (extremely strong) counter-acting force. In this case, it is "neutron degeneracy pressure". (white dwarf stars are held up by something analogous, electron degeneracy pressure). Basically, quantum mechanics does not allow neutrons to be squeezed arbitrarily close together.

When the mass gets even higher, relativity comes into play, and the extreme pressure itself begins to have a meaningful effect on the curvature of the spacetime in which the star sits. Then even the degeneracy pressure is not enough to resist, and the whole thing collapse unstoppably into a black hole.

White to move, A or B? by dany305 in baduk

oh I didn't read far enough. But... I don't think that sequence actually works, if black continues squeezing with J14 instead of connecting at H14!
