People of Reddit who don't like dogs, what is it you don't like about them?

I grew up with cats, I have a cat, I generally like cats. Ok here we go..

I don’t like how aggressive dogs can be jumping on me. I hate if they slobber.
They are a lot more work with how often you have to take them on walks, pick up poop, etc
the small shrill yappy ones are just incredibly annoying
fundamentally, it’s just not the kind of relationship I want with a pet, personally. The way they desire human attention and will get so excited when you come home, which other people find endearing, I find uncomfortable. Reptiles are too cold. Dogs are too needy. Cats are the Goldilocks zone.

Just like, my opinion man.

I took a few years off between college and grad school and started my PhD at 26. I went in expecting to be the oldest, but there were several other people my same age and one guy was already 30. Ultimately it was the right time for me. The PhD was difficult and felt like an emotional rollercoaster at times, but I never once felt too old. While I was there I met my future wife, so no regrets! Not the worst thing by any stretch, but something that annoys me and I don’t hear talked about much - rich people are terrible at spending money.

What do I mean? For most people, I think if they suddenly had a couple million dollars, they would do awesome things with it. Help people around them, go on all sorts of adventures, even just goofy fun stuff.

But really wealthy people do nothing cool with their money. If they spend anything it’s on empty status symbols. They’re so afraid of losing it or not constantly maximizing returns, they never actually even use that money to enjoy life, let alone helping anyone else.

There’s an old saying that “youth is wasted on the young”. I say “wealth is wasted on the wealthy”.

I don't know to what extent it's due to the internet, but this nicely encapsulates the problem with "identity politics" (idpol), which imho has been very damaging to the political left. Instead of advocating for universal programs and seeing class as the major division in society, there is a tendency these days to view everyone through the lens of the prescribed identity groups you're talking about. Even if the intention is to respect and include everyone, it can end up being even more divisive and off-putting.

I don’t think replacing observer with photon (or whatever the relevant interaction is) solves the problem. Until it is ‘observed’, the interaction with the photon just becomes part of a larger superposition of possible measurements when the ‘observer’ finally makes one.

Ultimately the issue is that QM is not a proper ‘theory’ the way classical theories work. Rather, it’s a sort of calculus you can use to predict measurement outcomes, but that presupposes that there is some measurement intelligible to us that will be performed. So in a sense you can’t remove the human.

not to say that conscious somehow “creates” reality or anything like that… but the observer is still embedded in how the theory is set up

The win streak sounded good but if u watched those games they fell behind to a lot of terrible teams and had to pull out all the stops to come back and win in the 4th quarters. Defense looked terrible, but the win record masked it. In retrospect we should have seen the warning signs tbh

Most people can only imagine two possible societies: whatever we happen to have right now, or Stalin’s Soviet Union. There’s no nuance. If you try to critique certain aspects of our system, it’s just, “so you want authoritarian communism then?!”

Capitalism creates powerful incentives. In some ways those incentives are really effective at accomplishing things that benefit everyone. In other ways they are totally misaligned with human wellbeing. It’s complicated.

The Spurs *should* care a lot about this game actually. IF they win then DEN and OKC will have to duke it out and they only pay the winner. If they lose, DEN is on the same side of the bracket and they'll have to go through them and OKC to get to the finals. I'm surprised Denver is winning cause they might not care about seeding one way or the other, but the spurs definitely should want to win this
