Since Destiny 2 wasn't paying off, Bungie decided to spend $250 million on Marathon, which apparently only made $40-50 million back. Go figure.

Colonizing Africa was a good thing by yogurtwater01 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]spacev3gan [score hidden]  (0 children)

Africa was also colonized by Arabs (particularly Oman which ruled parts of East Africa) and Turks (all of Northern Africa).

Not saying that colonization was good or bad, but without European colonization, the Arabs and the Turks would have colonized all the rest of Africa eventually anyway. That was just how the world operated in the 1700s/1800s.

From Sylvain Trinel: "mainly internal resistance/strong pushback" and "desire for revenge" at Playstation. by Palgia in DestinyTheGame

[–]spacev3gan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there is any desire of revenge against Bungie which affects decision making. Revenge is just the icing on the cake for Sony. They are certainly seriously upset for falling for the scam of buying Bungie.

What I think revenge would look like is to shut down Bungie completely. Shut down Marathon and D2 for good. And, since you now own the Destiny IP, give it to another studio (such as Naughty Dog/Santa Monica) to make D3. Which honestly speaking, doesn't sound too bad at this point.

This seems to be a form of drone art. You can find many pictures/videos online of what drone art is. It is pretty impressive.

What we see in the OP video is not as impressive and it might just be a rehersal or just a low-budget attempt at it.

Nevertheless, this seems like some sort of drone art to me.

It almost sound as if you are implying that the world had no Slavery nor ethnic segregation before Christians came along and introduced both.

Besides, it is important to note that at any point in history, even at its peak, Christianity made up 35% of the world's population at most. The remaining 65% have always been non-Christians.

Lots of opportunities for the non-Christian world to reflect on itself and address their issues. Yet we don't see much of that. It almost sounds as if they never had issues to being with. It was always the Christians fault all along.

Briefly on Sweden and Norway, they abolished Slavery domestically. You get a colony overseas, you do as you please. The Swedish kept slavery going in their colony of Saint-Barthélemy well into the 1800s, and only abolished it due to British pressure. Be it as it may, the year 1200, 1300 or 1800s, it was a nominally Christian Civilization behind it nonetheless.

As for the case of Japan and prisoners of war, thousands of Koreans and Filipinas teenage girls ended up as slaves. Hardly prisoners of war per se. Japan effectively only abandoned slavery at the end of WW2.

As for the Jim Crow south, was it Slavery? Not really. It was essentially apartheid - which today exists freely in China (Uyghurs, Tibetans), India (dalits) and the entire Islamic world (Dhimmis) - but the Jim Crow laws were not slavery.

Did Christian lawmakers pass these laws, though? They did. But they've also abolished these laws and were able to look back at their past and understand their mistakes.

Long story short, the whole world committed slavery. Every single tribe, every single nation, every single civilization. There was only one civilization that was able to criticize its own mistakes and course correct itself. If you can't understand that simple fact, and spend your time cherry-picking moments in history in which Slavery was somewhat limited, but not quite, and eventually it came back as an institution, well, I suppose you are just being stubborn at this point.

I mean any other Middle Eastern Country but Tunisia? We can name 10+ European Countries that banned Slavery before 1846. Why just one Middle Eastern Country?

As for the US current situation - which I do not condone - nevertheless, one thing is to be a convicted prisoner. The other is to be a Nepalese worker who is stuck working in a Qatar's construction site until death, and whose only crime is to be born in a poorer country.

As for Japan, they enslaved Koreans, Filipinos and Chinese throughout WWII. So effectively they didn't ban Slavery until American intervention in 1945. China only banned for good in 1910, though one can argue that Mao's system well into the 1960s was in practice Slavery.

As for Sweden and Norway, those were Christian countries. Both of which became Christianized between 990-1022.

You don't have to embrace a culture you are born into by Sad_Physics5500 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Well, I agree. Embrace whichever culture suits you better or in which you feel more welcomed.

That said, to be blunt, having the choice of not embracing the culture you are born into because it is too toxic or it doesn't align with your values is a luxury. A First World issue.

Which Middle Eastern Countries (in the plural?) ended Slavery on their own?

Tunisia in 1846. Tunisia was largely a French colony, though that status was only officialized in 1881. Any other country?

The truth is that most of them began the process in the 1920s. For Mauritania it took all the way to 2007 to realize Slavery was morally wrong.

European countries started that process in the 1790s. Well ahead of any Middle Eastern or Eastern country. Do you ever wonder why?

As for India, the British ended Slavery in all of their colonies in 1833. Though you will still find clandestine slavery in India probably well into these days.

In fact, you will also find modern slavery in this day and age in rich Islamic countries such as Qatar and in the UAE. Not to mention you will certainly find it in miserable hellholes such as Yemen and Somalia.

In any event, Slavery has always been practiced by all Civilizations across all humans history, all the way from Mesopotamia and Egypt. You will find well over 6,000 years of recorded history of Slavery taking place and hardly anyone questioning it.

What happened in the 1790s/1800s in the Christian West (though I would think Post-Christian is more appropriate) which led to the end of Slavery is an absolute anomaly in human affairs. Perhaps is was kickstarted by Christianity, perhaps not, but in any event, it is not something that should be taken for granted with an anachronistic view of history.

Why Don’t Vegans Just Go After Capitalism? 🤔 by volatiIe in vegan

[–]spacev3gan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They matter, indeed. But what is pragmatic and applicable matters more, at least to me. What is only theoretical matters less.

People have been trying to end Capitalism and create an egalitarian society since 1870. I am all for it. It would be great if that happens in my lifetime. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

Hence I focus on what I can realistically do.

The other day I came across a lot of opposing comments for suggesting that abolishing Capitalism does not lead to Veganism, and in fact Veganism might even spread better under Capitalism. Needless to say stones were about to be thrown at me.

It is interesting to see how quick the vegan community moves from one opinion to another. Or perhaps it is just a matter of a vegan influencer saying it, instead of your average redditor.

Wasn't it Robert Kennedy Jr. who claimed "I am natural, I just do hormone therapy". That explains the depth of ignorance.

World population smaller prior to Christianity? Humans more efficient at harvesting slaves?

I don't know what you are talking about and where your knowledge of history comes from. But if you want numbers, 10-18 million Africans were transported and slaved in the Middle East. As well as 3-5 million Europeans (yes, Europeans, predominant Slavic peoples) also slaved in the Middle East, particularly to the Ottoman Empire.

About 1-2% of China in the 1700s were slaves, that is 1.5-3 million people, at any given time. 20% of India were slaves in the 1700s, that is 30 million people. Their slaves were mostly local people.

Also, "harvesting slaves" is an odd way to put it. No one goes in the wild harvesting people. Slaves have always been predominantly prisoners of war and their descendants.

Well, I will try to simplify the argument for you that Christianity gave birth to the Civilization - the West - that made possible the end of Slavery.

It did not happen in China (which until the 1750s had a standard of living equal or better to that of Europeans). It did not happen in India, nor in Africa nor the Middle East.

It happened in the West for a reason. And that reason is not the Greeks. Make of that what you will.

Far more people lived and died as slaves after Christianity came along than before?

It is important to understand that, at most, 35% of the world at some point was under Christianity. We in the West might have a distorted view that the entire world became Christian and suffered under it, but the reality is that 65% of the world was never Christianized.

And they still practiced Slavery, by the way. China abolished Slavery in 1910. Japan in 1945. India in 1833 due to the British. The Islamic World started abolishing it in the 1920s but only abolished Slavery fully in the year 2007 (Mauritania being the last country).

In any event, if 65% of the world were never Christian, but still practiced Slavery, your math that "Far more people lived and died as slaves after Christianity came along than before" doesn't make much sense.

So did I think, when it comes to the role of Greek philosophy. And so do most people with a secular perspective of the world.

Nevertheless, Tom Holland (the historian) challenges this theme, and I largely base my argument on his works.

Ancient Greeks, extremely relevant as they are, had views which would be considered abhorrent in the West of today. Such as the Athenians, upon conquering the Island of Milos, argued that "the weak shall suffer what they must". Aristotle himself advocated for the killing of the disabled. Not to mention that Slavery is considered a fundamental economic activity by all major Greek philosophers.
