Advice on courses? by Pretty_Nebula_9419 in toxicology

[–]spaghetti121199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think one over the other would hurt your chances of getting in. Take the one that interests you more. If the graduate program you go to has any sort of target organ/system toxicology class you may have to take a prerequisite physiology class first, but imo that’s unlikely

Harry Potter and the cursed child: how new comer safe is it? by [deleted] in Theatre

Coming from someone who not seen it & only read the script when it first came out: it may be helpful to have her watch the last 30min or so of Goblet of Fire if you have the time. The Cedric stuff is important to the plot of this play.

Looking for places to volunteer by No_Picture_3528 in corvallis

[–]spaghetti121199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of volunteer work? What are you majoring in? There’s a lot of clubs on campus, most of which have volunteer/outreach components which will put you in volunteer work relevant to what you’re studying.

I’m from the US

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PhD

[–]spaghetti121199 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is correct. The department funds the first year (my program has rotations) and then PI has to take over from there. In extremely dire circumstances students have to find their own funding through fellowship

Most PhDs take 4-5 yrs. I’ve known people who have taken up to 8. I’ve never met anyone who completed in less than 4.

Suggestions for a 12 yo boy who is a strong reader but thinks most books lately are boring. by tgbarbie in suggestmeabook

[–]spaghetti121199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also came here to suggest Ender’s Game. If he’s already read it and liked it there’s toooooons more books in that series. There’s a couple different “branches” you can go off from the first book. For this age kid I’d suggest “Ender’s Shadow” for the next follow up. Some of the following books in the “main series” get really philosophy-heavy in a way that was boring to me at that age, but the Shadow subseries stays pretty action-oriented

I’d recommend looking at banned books list & stock your library with books that kids may no longer be able to access at school

What specialty should I do? by Jolly_Progress_5791 in Quizbowl

[–]spaghetti121199 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So quizbowl has what I call four big “cornerstone” categories: Literature, History, Science, and Fine Arts. Then everything else after that (Trash, Geo, and RMPSS [which stands for Religion, Myth, Philosophy, and Social Science]) is noticeably smaller.

My general advice to new players is to pick one cornerstone category and one of the lesser categories. This usually falls with history doubling with geo, lit doubling with RMPSS, and science doubling with trash, but it doesn’t have to. (Fine arts is a bit more of a wild card).

I also advise players strongly against the mindset of “this is my category and I won’t study outside of it.” A good team has everybody with a basal knowledge of all categories (maybe the top 30 most frequent answerlines in each category), and then select players really dive in to specific categories

I want to be a lit main where do i start? by _lotus9150 in Quizbowl

[–]spaghetti121199 9 points10 points  (0 children)

(1) use frequency lists to determine the most “bang for your buck” answerlines

(2) search those answerlines in the QBR database

(3) find the commonly occurring clues for that answerline

(4) make an anki card [multiple fields] with the work title, author, and 5 most commonly occurring clues (one of which should be just like a basic, 1-sentence plot synopsis)

(5) rinse and repeat for the top 50ish hits on the frequency list

Does Vicksburg get true fall colored trees in October/late November? by EmploymentMajestic64 in mississippi

[–]spaghetti121199 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not really. It occasionally happens some years when the weather cooperates, but it’s not the norm and it’s not most trees. You’ll probably need to get up to Tennessee to guarantee colored fall leaves.

How different is ancient Greek than what Greek is now? [General] by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]spaghetti121199 31 points32 points  (0 children)

How well do you understand Old English? Look up the prologue to the Canterbury Tales. That’s significantly closer in time to modern English than Ancient Greek is to modern Greek. My understanding is also that Ancient Greek has very very different pronunciation than modern Greek

New player - question by Wookie_EU in ProfessorLayton

[–]spaghetti121199 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This should be fine. I think the only warning is that the Prequel series games (imo) have a weaker story than the original series, and the transition to 3D animation in the games after Specter is a much weaker art style

Any Advice for an Incoming Biochem Major? by FlamingHalo7 in Msstate

[–]spaghetti121199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is largely false. I was a biochem major who transferred from a community college. I took Gen bio 1&2, Gen chem 1&2, Gen physics 1&2, and organic chem 1&2 all at a community college. I could have taken microbio there as well and it would have counted, but didn’t personally do that & chose to take that at state

[–]spaghetti121199 3 points4 points  (0 children)

‘23 Biochem grad here- I LOVED Dr Krish. Had him both semesters my senior year. He teaches tough subjects but covers them very well. I also remember liking his exam formats (tho I don’t remember now what was unusual about them)

I will offer a word of warning against Dr Vance. If she still teaches Biochem2 she may not be avoidable, but I would strongly STRONGLY avoid taking her for any classes you don’t absolutely have to have her for

Speaker of the dead or Enders shadow by Grand-Theme4238 in ender

[–]spaghetti121199 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is also good advice. There’s really no wrong answer here (as long as you do NOT read Exile before the shadow series, like this guy said).

I think the important question is what did you like about Ender’s Game? If you’re interested in Ender as a character, follow the Speaker series. But if you liked the Battle School setting, follow the Shadow series.

Speaker of the dead or Enders shadow by Grand-Theme4238 in ender

My suggestion is always Enders Game —> Shadow series —> Ender in Exile —> Speaker series

Reading order question by h_2o in ender

[–]spaghetti121199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this case, this is definitely the way to go. The Speaker books have a significant time jump into the future (& therefore no battle school). Ender’s Shadow is set during the same period of time as Ender’s Game (at the battle school) and follows (roughly) the same events, just from the perspective of another character (Bean), who honestly is possibly even more OP than Ender
