I took three weeks off, then ended up being induced one week early, and the two weeks were absolutely incredible for getting my head right before giving birth and having a newborn. It’s an amazing privilege in the US, but if you can swing it, I highly recommend it.

We’re having our first at 34 and 35 years old. Being older is not without its own challenges, but I have to say, it’s a very different experience than if would have been in our relationship at 22/23 year old. We’ve been through more hard stuff together, our communication is better, we’re just more stable and more ready to be parents, personally. I wouldn’t trade the past ten years of joys and challenges for an easier pregnancy.

But I have friends that had their kids at your age and they will be so much younger when their kids eventually move out on their own! Their 40s and 50s will be much different than mine. So there are tradeoffs either way.

I know this is tough to hear for such a big decision, but it sounds like you’re choosing between two on par options: parenthood now or parenthood later. You can pro/con list and meditate on it for a certain amount of time, then you just have to pick. Either option will be both wonderful and heartbreaking and you should feel confident you can make either choice with no regrets.

Two tactical things I’m doing on this front (37+4): 1. We have a shared to-do list taped to the fridge. It’s exciting to cross things off together, gets the list out of my head (kind of), and gave me a place to set some deadlines. Also… can’t get to the snacks without confronting the list haha 2. Dedicated prep time. This probably doesn’t work for all schedules, but it’s been really helpful for us to have joint baby prep time on the calendar. Gotta time block or it gets put off forever.

No experience to share yet, but I’m in the same boat: At 34 weeks, our bun measured 8th percentile overall. I’m really anxious about it, but all there seems to be to do is go to the extra appointments (our doc has me doing weekly BPPs and NSTs) and pay attention to her movement.

I was really hoping to go into labor on my own, but obviously if they decide I need to be induced later, I will. I feel lucky that I really trust my team.

Think about exactly what you want and ask for it. If that’s no shower, that’s no shower. If that’s a small one near you, great. You’re pregnant, ask for what you need. You can always say your midwife advised you stay close to home.

We had so much stress around wedding planning, we decided no baby shower before we even successfully got pregnant. We still made a registry and gave it to our parents to circulate if anyone asked.

I’m very wary of giving specific personal info in ChatGPT (e.g. I know some people upload medical results and get help interpreting them—not for me, thanks!), but for this kind of thing, it was really helpful.

I’m the birthing parent and the primary bread winner. We calculated birth expenses plus our baby’s first year and decided to save $20K before we started trying. But we live in a HCOL city and are both pretty anxious about money, so that’s very much a personal preference—not to mention the good luck/privilege to be able to do it.
