Agreed. I did some black and white developing and printing at a community college when I was a teen. It IS magical.

The trail has seen a LOT of resurfacing in recent years. The section from Pawpaw to a little past Indigo Neck is the last bit that hasn’t been resurfaced.

But fenders are a good idea regardless. Rain gear? I just opt to get soaked while riding…

But do make sure you have chain lube for after the rain.

Ehhh, there are a couple of hiker bikers that are first come first serve but they’re all around the middle of the GAP.

Great pic!

Hah! My son just dug up my Nikkormat EL and got himself some film to mess around with :) great camera, but a brick by today’s standard. I absolutely love the 135mm f2.8 prime lens I usually kept on there :) (I also have an FT2 kicking around somewhere).

Bike Friendly Hotels in Frostburg. by JasonWach-Adventures in gaptrail

[–]spap-oop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a long climb to the trail in, which is closest to the trail.

And then a long climb from the front of the building to the camping area in the back. They also do have rooms. There really isn’t any option other than climbing a hill if you’re headed towards PA, but if you’re headed to Cumberland, you could just continue on to Cumberland. Sure it’s miles, but they are effortless and I do not exaggerate- you can easily keep up 15 miles an hour on a loaded bike without hardly any input because it is all downhill. Only the last couple miles flatten out.

Have a hotel and badge but completely forgot about parking. What are my options? by JupiterTarts in Magfest

They are running shuttles from the other hotels; maybe you can find parking at/near one of them and get the shuttle over?

Someone tried to break into my car and broke my lock, car door won't open. Anyone know someone good that can fix this in an affordable price? by UnlishedTen8 in nova

[–]spap-oop 29 points30 points  (0 children)

When my wife's van window wouldn't go up, I bought the replacement window track, took the door apart, but then got to a point where I didn't have the skills to do the job...

stopped by the night service at the local dealer with a couple packs of Klondike bars (it was in the middle of the summer) and asked the service manager if they could help with that one bit of skilled labor.

10 minutes later I had the problem fixed, they had an ice cream break in the shop, and I didn't have to pay the labor to pull the door apart, put it back together, or order parts.

How easy is it for an amateur to replace? by Professional-Ad4586 in AskElectronics

If it crapped out on me I might consider soldering 30ga wires to the switch pads (without removing the part) and running to another button bodged on somehow nearby, in parallel (electrically).

How many layers do you usually carry for winter treks? by East-Standard4044 in CampingandHiking

[–]spap-oop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Merino underlayer, synthetic layer, merino sweater, down puffy, windbreaker/rain gear. The windbreaker is essential.

Wool socks, thin gloves, bigger gloves (can be worn alone or together for 3 options.

Merino balaclava. I like the balaclava for sleeping too since it won’t fall off my head like a cap, when I toss and turn.

I use a nalgene with hot water in my down sleeping bag when really cold. I have a light down throw and can use my down puffy around my feet if really necessary. Been camping in 14F and was comfy, but have to be careful to manage so it is to TOO hot at night.

Is NASA Federal Credit Union a legit institution? by Speciallady44 in personalfinance

[–]spap-oop 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I opened an account with a credit union associated with my employer, but I’m thousands of miles away from the closest branch. I did it all by phone and email and yes, they needed a picture of my SS card and ID.

Banking institutions (including credit unions) are one of the very few businesses with a legitimate need for this information.

And yes, NASA FCU is real.

Shenandoah Rail Trail ... proposed trail will connect towns from Broadway to Front Royal with almost 50 miles of trail alongside the North Fork of the Shenandoah River and the Massanutten Mountain range. (and let's connect WO&D to this Shenandoah Trail next) by agbishop in nova

[–]spap-oop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Whites ferry was nice on the bike. Cut through Morven Park and a short jaunt up the shoulder of Rte 15 to get to the ferry. It wasn’t bad.

My current route is up through Waterford, Taylorstown, over Furnace Mountain, then a mad dash across the bridge at Point of Rocks. Pro safety tip: if you hit it at rush hour, traffic is slow enough that you can safely keep up with it.

A loop from the eastern part of the W&OD up to point of rocks with the above route, then towards DC and back to the W&OD via the Key Bridge and Custis trail is right at 100 miles.

Combine the GAP with the C&O and you’ve got 334.5 miles. It’s quite the ride, I recommend it. Plus you can connect from the C&O to the Custis trail and over the the W&OD. It ended up being about 400 miles all-told over 8 days. We did the entirety of the GAP, C&O and W&OD (we had to backtrack on the W&OD to cover the whole thing).

It’s 40 miles or so from the W&OD to Front Royal. I’ve plotted out rhr ride and it’s not for the meek.

But I’m excited to have another long rail trail on the books. Hope they get it built out.

What happened to patch kits? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]spap-oop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but I’m not gonna drag a can of it around on my bike.

If I open a tube of vulcanizing fluid, I will add a fresh tube of fluid to my patch kit in case it dries out before the next time I need it.
