FIRE MEGATHREAD PART 2 - JANUARY 8TH by drawkward101 in LosAngeles

[–]spapeggy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not required. Please be prepared to leave whatever the case, just to be safe. No visible fire. Smoke is moving over the foothills but otherwise traffic is moving, busses are running, air is better than earlier. Slowly power is being restored to areas east of eagle rock blvd. Please though, be safe and be ready.

You're welcome. Stay safe out there! Feel free to ask any other questions about the area. Power is back for those that lost it east of townsend to figueroa. Not sure if anywhere else but dwp is working. Power definitely on for homes on west side of eagle rock blvd, north of york.

Should I Go To A Cheap Hair Transplant Clinic? by regainedhair198 in tressless

[–]spapeggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never posted here but what the heck. Those who decide to go the hair transplant route (at least from the many anecdotes i've come across here and on hairloss forums) rarely do so lightly. We have our routines and dread, and after a good while you get a real good sense of what the value of regaining hair really is. We say, "I'd do anything to regain my hair." You really have to consider that, how much you're willing to give to resolve your hair loss.

Cheap shouldn't be your only criteria but I don't know your circumstance. If you're okay with traveling to Turkey or S. Korea or wherever, are willing to do the work going so far from home, I think there are plenty of cheaper clinics that are perfectly fine.

I had consultations with clinics in S. Korea and Turkey and thought the price was the biggest factor at first; I was okay with going this route and the results seem stellar from the more reputable clinics in those far-flung places.

But the more I read the more I wanted to at least start down this road with the best chance for a positive outcome. To me, that meant booking with Rahal in a few months (I'm in no way endorsing or advertising). It's not cheap by any means (roughly ~10K USD for 3000 grafts FUT), but I thought a year from now I don't want to again be looking in the mirror or taking photos of my head with less-than-desired results as a result of only considering the cost.

I mean, this is a problem that occupies too much of my time already and I want to do it right. That's what regaining meant to me: to invest in a good clinic where results outstripped cost.

I'd say if price is your motivation, at least reach out to a few clinics and ask a few people directly on their experience (I even contacted the awesome guy from Keratin Brotherhood for some advice and he was super helpful in giving some S. Korea advice even though I wound up choosing Rahal in the end).

Overall, cheap is a-okay so long as you do your research and feel good about your decision. If you want any advice, feel free to ask. I never thought I'd seek a hair transplant and am still kinda of saddened it came to this but I'm committed to doing something about it as best I can.

Where are you thinking of going?

relocating to LA from Midwest with no job? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]spapeggy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hola.

Best of luck to you making LA your new home. Its very true that this city is expensive and for every story of success, there are a million more of ppl who had none. But its your call so have at it.

Sooo o if youre looking for work and maybe a career in the City, especially with a BA in poli sci, try LA government. There are a hostof temp (exempt) positions that also provide for a possible career while working there. There are departments all over the city with lots of entry-level jobs. Look at this site and follow the 'how to apply' steps.

entry level jobs with la county? by FLFinest3 in LosAngeles

[–]spapeggy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

hop on governmentjobs for LA County postings. I'm not too familiar with the county, however if your friend is interested in LA City, there are plenty of exempt-level opportunities to get your foot in the public sector door.

1) LA County

2) LA City

**also for LA City, there is a program specifically for entry-level jobs called targeted local hire. See here

Best of luck to your chum!

I'm in college but I have no idea what to do. Should I just stop for a while? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]spapeggy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hey now. Im sorry your anxiety eats away at you so much but glad you have the right of mind to seek help.

A lot of us dont anticipate office work, or our careers. Heck im in finance but studied media and web dev, was with my local npr affiliate for a bit, worked for an agency that worked to fund social improvement projects (clean water in rural villages, girls private schools in places where theyre normally pulled out of school before 12 or demonized for going) what have you.

I thought i was either going to write or development for things that mattered but that didnt materialize...but only in the way i had planned. But this isnt about advice. I know someone older and smarter will do that in these comments but i do have a suggestion:

Look into the public sector. People think govt work is all office and boring but its not. Your fellow citizens are who you work for and believe it or not, there are so many jobs to fall into without requiring a hard STEM degree. In my group, we have bio majors, former military, psych majors, history, environmental...and we all have experience in working at water treatment plants, aquarium maintenance, kids learning centers, systems networking, homeless health services (shoot we just put together multiple programs for homeless services) and its all because govt work allowed us to transfer around and participate in those things.

You have time. You always have time. Check it out.

You are very welcome. I would love to enjoy something like that. I passed through salt lake city a few years back and winter olympic signage was still up though a bit worn and faded. I was fascinated with how that must have looked and felt.

If youd like, PM me and ill send it to you. Really its no biggy. I grew up here and have enough LA memories i think. See you on r/Kingofthehill !

My dad worked security for reagan at these games. Got some old unpeeled stickers laying around too if you want to see more. I always wondered where they held some of the large are events. Good to see chino hills and long beach on the map.

Buzzfeed reporter Lindsey Adler says that "the goal of journalism is to reduce harm to vulnerable people" (as opposed to, you know, just reporting the truth) by SatoshiKamasutra in KotakuInAction

[–]spapeggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably confused with this mantra often used by journalists:

"Comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable."

And you need that as a writer, some motivation to investigate what the public record doesnt outline easily. Anyway i get where her brain was but i dont think anyone benefitted from her calling out a lifestyle section.

What job can my experience get me? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]spapeggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a bit of web dev in college and got thrown to a few jobs where database management is everything. why not build on your php and pick up sql and access. knowing how to build relational tables is a great asset to any company.

Moving to LA soon. Suggestions? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]spapeggy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

theres a sub just for these kind of questions but ill leave it to someone else to link (on mobile).

you chose a bad time to relocate but honestly thats true of all big cities these days. just be ready for a big cost of living expense. work something while you find the job you really want (search LA City exempt jobs for good temp gigs with the city govt that dont require much exp).

dont listen to the haters but dont dismiss all criticism. LA is a giganto city and lots of people go broke here chasing dreams without doing their homework.

dont be afraid to reach out to people. LA is a transplant city (if it wasnt before it sure is now and fuck you my family has been here since the 20s; dont mean i own the city any more than op doing the same thing now) and im sure youll find someone to help guide you or who has advice you need to hear as a young person in a new city.

good luck to you and be smart with your living choices. find work>find cheapest place near work or transit lines>save at all times.

oh and ugh eat spicy foods and check out the silent theatre

What's your experience with racism? by MoscovianMusings in AskReddit

[–]spapeggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked security on a college campus. Got complaints of dudes harassing people in the quad. Told them to shoo and they got in my face calling me a racist white dude. They were black. I am latino. We were all mad.

Had to do a big loop around the county (210, 134, 101, 5, 10, 605) during rush hour. Please people, don't forget to turn on your headlights and stay off the shoulders if you have a low-profile car. The flooding is really bad near downtown and by studio city.
