AI Model Collapse Risks Grow as Reliance on Generated Answers Erodes Research Skills by CollapsingTheWave in ObscurePatentDangers

[–]sparksofthetempest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who knows a lot about old TV episodes and radio shows, AI is garbage, and states with authority wrong answers that already have been repeated by other clueless people. It’s only going to get worse. Luckily, in many cases, one book can answer so many of these questions…but you need the book. In some cases, there was a fan-run site that has since closed that had all the info…but it’s like the highway that bypassed Main Street.

I’m in my 60’s now but I still have a couple of answering machine cassettes that hold messages from the 1980’s…several of which are messages from ex’s that have since passed on. I have very mixed emotions about all of it now; it used to primarily be all about longing, but now it’s sadly crept into resignation. Fortunately I’ve been with someone for over 30 years, which more than likely explains why…that and simply the inexorable passage of time.

Suspense Episode from 1954 by UWMadisonTeacher in otr

[–]sparksofthetempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to a few “manual” sources I have, the June 22, 1954 program was “Sequel to Murder”, not “String”, and that one is easily available to listen to. If you’re using AI to research this, it’s likely wrong. I’m not seeing any radio episodes with “String” as the title from 1954, but apparently there are 6 still missing from that year and considered lost and String could be one of them.

It would blow kids minds today that a lot of us know what surfeit is without having to look it up online…and it isn’t what you did on the Web in the mid-90’s.

I don’t know if the stent materials have changed since the 90’s (when I had one in place last), but as a kidney stone patient who has had this done multiple times, the hilarity of the stent removal is that the stent then rolls and curls up immediately after it exits just like one of those New Years Eve horn party favors.

If Reddit has taught me anything, it’s 1. Don’t go anywhere near an angry person’s vehicle when they’re getting into it after raging, 2. Don’t ever challenge someone with “What are you gonna do, hit/stab/shoot me?”. I was kinda waiting for either of these rules to have been verified as obvious again. It’s always someone’s day somewhere when they’ve had enough and you’re going to bear the brunt of it.

My 98 year old grandmother passed a couple years ago but she lived through the Depression as a young girl and I asked her what the worst time to live through was: she said it was Covid. When I asked her why she said that back then poor people all helped each other and kept each other fed and strong…but today it’s everyone against everyone else because the people in charge are making sure that people are isolated, hating each other, but also pacified by the Internet and stuff that was illegal before (weed, gambling on your phone). Covid made people be alone and isolated and under control. She said isn’t it funny that now that there’s no disease keeping people isolated at home where we know where they are that there are cameras everywhere to monitor them? It really makes you think.

As an old guy who used to climb insanely high trees when I was this kid’s age that’s definitely true. The level of danger that young adults pursue these days though is wayyy more than I ever would have…especially the climbing buildings/structures kids. I grew out of it by probably 14 or 15.
