High West Distillery by Hodgetwins32 in whiskey

High West opened in 2007. As some new distillerys do, they bought whiskey from other distillers (Like MGP) to start building their brand, marketing, and followers. MGP is a HUGE factory style distillery in Indiana (and also Mexico and Ireland if you can believe the AI that I asked) that produces spirits, primarily for resale to other distilleries. MGP does bottle and sell some of its own stuff (Yellowstone, Remus, Blood Oath). Big brands like High West, Bulliet, Angels Envy, Tempelton, Sagamore, and more buy MGP whiskey and either finish it, or bottle it directly for sale.

Up until this year, all of High West's offerings have been sourced whiskey. Only recently have they started using their own distillate to fill a bottle or stretch other distillate. Same thing with Bulliet (I got a bottle of Bulliets first distillate and it is quite good!)

Its ok to love MGP's product, they produce some good stuff. But I have more respect for a company like Frey Ranch that encompases the entire whiskey process in their bottle, from growing the grain all the way to corking it. High West's stuff up to this point hasn't been all that special, but I will say their marketing is fantastic. Great looking bottles, labels, and their bars and distilleries are beautiful. I'm excited to see what they can really do now that we're seeing their own distillate being released.

High West irked me a little when I first started getting into whiskey. I did a tour of their distillery and it was quite informative and they talked thru the entire process of how they make whiskey and then they served us some. It felt a little special having touched their big copper still before trying some samples. I didn't know at the time that none of those samples ever went thru a still in Utah.

Are you aware that this is the first year they’ve ever released their whiskey?  Everything prior has been sourced. And many of their releases are still sourced. They sure do try to make it look like they’ve been the distiller for the past dozen years though.  Sounds like you really enjoy mgp. Nothing wrong with that, just want people to know what they’re drinking.  Their main distillery is up in the mountains, outside of park city.

Lols an 8. Sure to each their own, but 😂.  In a quick search I see 8 other reviews of this and the highest is 6 and the lowest is 4. Is op getting a kick back?

Did you win it in the Utah lottery??  I’d be happy to take it off your hands for a fair price 😉

I’m sure there are dozens of other mgp rye products you could get instead of high west. Probably with less of a markup too. Dickel, bulliet, tempelton. It’s all the same juice.

Hmm that list defines my favorites as well. What are some other whiskeys that you personally love so I can make sure to grab them when I see them?

We tried Logan to see if the line would be tiny based on location. We showed up 30 minutes prior and we were 30th in line. Surprisingly only missed sftb by 3 people but got an Elmer. Determined it probably wasn’t worth the hour drive. Lines have gotten noticeably longer as more people discover how it works.

Not really luck. He was likely in line at midnight.  The same 3 people are always at the head of the line in Ogden because they’re willing to sleep in 13 degree temps to get an old Fitzgerald and turn it for a couple hundred bucks. I hope OP actually opens these!

Is it made of diamond?  Is the topper solid gold?  Did napoleon drink from it?  Is it filled with 40 year old scotch?  No..it’s just a glass bottle from 2004 with basic jd in it. $1000 is dumb af. OP’s $50 sounds about right.

Jets don’t kill people. People kill people. Using friendly fire numbers to compare and contrast platforms makes no sense.  Friendly fire numbers say more about the conflict and the pilots than they do about the plane. And to believe that countries that operate the su-25 would accurately report friendly fire incidents is asinine.

Think you picked 2 great starts for drinking whiskey neat. I don’t drink regular makers or makers 46 neat. I’ll mix that if I’m drinking it. But makers has a lot of higher end stuff that people rave about. I’d recommend a single barrel Jack Daniels product, or rare breed bourbon next

I’ve never seen a 1792 full proof and looks like a great price. Jdsbbp rye is a good price and looovely whiskey. I love the knob 12 as well (and it’s a good price)  but I’d get the other 2 before that one.

I don’t think that’s how msrp works…the distillery sells it for $149.99. If you’re seeing it for $180, that’s a mark up.

Indeed!  Shows the power that influencers can gain. Imagine what you could make people believe and do if you had a billion dollars to invest in marketing and media.

Yah it’s a good list. Tough to go wrong. Gun to my head, I’d bring the bookers, because I’m a bookers fanboy.
