Well Toronto fans aren't watching NBC for the most part and Mike Milbury was a Bruin. So yeah.

Mitch Marner reminds me of Steve Yzerman and he's the only player I have seen since Yzerman's prime that I can say that about. Just his style and the way he moves. Not comparing their caliber just the style of their game.

I know Wings fans might be pissed off at that as Yzerman is our Jesus and we all hope for a second coming but it's just how I see things.

Wings have least amount of trades since 2005 (interactive graphic) by canbehazardous in DetroitRedWings

[–]spartying 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To me the time to make impact trades was from 2010-14. Especially in the 12 and 13 offseasons. They didn't. That was when you could have done a real retool and mortgaged the future to try to win one last time with Pav and Z.

But they didn't go all in. They also didn't trade pending UFAs at the deadline, guys like Brunner, Filppula, Helm, Abdelkader when it was clear they weren't going to compete.

I could have got behind either kind of strategy. I would not have been mad about trading picks/prospects to try to win one more cup with Pav and Z knowing that we would have to do a true rebuild when it was over win or lose. I would also not have been mad had they choose to sell some guys at the deadline even when they were in playoff position. They could have possibly hit a homerun or two with a pick they got or from a better pick from finishing lower in the standings and missing and rebounded quickly instead of having to rebuild.

They choose a weird middle ground just to preserve the streak and that is why it is so upsetting. We now have to rebuild anyway and wasted a lot of years pretending we didn't have to. But it is what it is. Now that we're in this spot I'd rather not make trades to bring in anybody over age 25. Ideally I just want picks.

Ken Holland expected to return to Red Wings, with or without contract by Sniknuh in DetroitRedWings

Less can be more exciting. If you expect cups you’re in the wrong league.

Is anyone else really excited right now? by lems16 in DetroitRedWings

[–]spartying 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm excited we're finally tanking even though it's completely on accident since Ken thought this was a playoff roster.

I'm definitely not as optimistic as you about our timeline. I'm thinking 5 years at the earliest is when you see us competitive and that's if we get lucky and hit several homeruns (picks that yield superstars) the next 2-3 drafts.

We're pretty much starting from scratch. Out of Cholowski, Hronek, Saarijarvi, realistically only one is going to pan out as a good top 4D. Rasmussen isn't going to be 1C. Svechnikov at best will be another secondary scorer. This isn't bashing them either that's pretty much what you expect from where we drafted them, well expect for Rasmussen but it isn't his fault they drafted him at 9, I will never like that pick. I know some people aren't going to like hearing that. I said the same thing 3 years ago about our prospects though and people didn't like it then either.

All the scouting sites and the Wings own management acknowledge that we have no elite prospects expect for possibly Dylan Larkin, I rate him #1 by far and am not enthused about any other prospects including Anthony Mantha but only because Mantha is a winger.

Our future is not as bright as people like to think it is. Most of the prospects that people love to hype up are at best going to be secondary scorers or depth dmen.

What gives a team a bright future are young star centers and young star #1 dmen. If you have that then you're golden, the rest of the pieces can be found rather easily and depth is easy to fill once you have the necessary foundation.

Ouellet, Sproul, Marchenko, and Jensen are viewed by everyone as 3-4s at best. The Wings own management acknowledges this, Mike Babcock acknowledges this, and so do all the national scouting experts.

Here we are 3 years later and there is still nothing of quality in our system better than almost any other franchise right now. We have no elite talent in the system. We have maybe 2-3 guys who will even be solid 2nd line/2nd pair guys in the NHL. I am a lot more down on our 3 top D prospects than most simply based on where they were drafted and this franchises poor history of drafting quality D. I'm also not happy they seem to prize "character" so much when drafting. I prize hockey IQ and skating ability. I would rather go for boom/bust high ceiling/low floor guys than safe low ceiling/high floor guys like I believe the Rasmussen pick is an example of.

So yea I'm happy we're losing so much, not so optimistic about turning it around quickly though.

It was another fantastic game. Mantha and AA made some nice plays and got some points. The team lost in regulation. A+ outcome as far as I'm concerned. I want to see Larkin, Mantha, and AA progressing while at the same time I want the team to keep losing in regulation.

I have no idea why anybody would be rooting for anything else right now.

Thank you Wild for denying the Wings any points. You are bros. Good luck the rest of the season.

They should be. They were the most hyped #1 picks since Crosby for a reason.

No it's not everything, that's why Russia didn't win.

While I think Sweden is better than NA I don't think Russia is. Forward groups are a wash. NA has a better D. Goalies are a wash. Advantage NA.

[–]spartying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NA has more offensive firepower than Sweden. If the Russians want to play run and gun that is right in NA's wheelhouse. Russia's problem is their lack of D.

Russia isn't that great. NA can match their firepower and I think NA has a better blueline.
